Harry Reid Gets Potentially Big Break in Nevada

By GottaLaff

http://www.schoodoodle.com/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Harry_Reid.jpg

The Big Break?
Jon Ralston reports the Tea Party has qualified as a third party in Nevada and will have a candidate in the U.S. Senate race.

Assuming the Tea Party candidate would draw votes away from the Republican candidates, it may be just the thing Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) needs to win in a race where he's run behind in polls for months.
Can anything save Harry at this point? Stay tuned...

Celtic Diva nails it again. I'll give you a couple of excerpts, but go over to her place for some elaboration:
[M]y good friend (I'll call him "E") had called three times, which is unlike him. [...]
Nothing quite like being nearly sideswiped at 65mph with your child in the car!

The idiot woman with the "Choose Life" & "Palin 2012" bumper stickers on her BMW at least stopped her cellphone conversation long enough to flip me off after nearly slamming into me.

...no turn signal either, of course. [...]

The issue here isn't even that this woman made several bonehead moves on the road...we all screw up occasionally. The outrageous part of the story is that SHE put a 5-month-old and his father in danger by breaking the law and driving like a drunk woman. Then, SHE gave HIM the finger like it was HIS fault!
Preachy McFraudLips' devotees are following in the footsteps of their half-governor, all show and no go. What they lack are ghost writers and palm Sharpies.

There's a saying I've heard that goes a lit-tle something like this: You can judge a person by his/her friends. Take a look at who Michele Bachmann's friends are:
According to the survey, commissioned by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Democracy for America, and Credo Action, 56% of Minnesota voters are embarrassed by Bachmann while 29% are proud of her. Another 15% are not sure how they feel about her.

Among Democrats, 87% said they were embarrassed by her, while only 12% of Republicans said they were. Another 58% of Republicans said they were proud of her.
Be proud, Rushpublics. America is judging you.

Anthem Blue Cross to delay insurance rate hike amid criticism

By GottaLaff

http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2010-02/52173381.jpg

Did my family just get a reprieve? Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease:
Health insurer Anthem Blue Cross will postpone its much-criticized plan to raise rates for some California residents who buy insurance on their own, after reaching a deal Saturday with state regulators.

Anthem's planned rate hike, which the state estimates would affect about 700,000 customers, averaged 25 percent and would have been as high as 39 percent for some.

Anthem Blue Cross of California, based in Thousand Oaks, agreed to postpone the increase from March 1 until May 1 so California could have outside experts review the company's complex and detailed plan filing, including data on the medical costs it expects to incur.

We're among the lucky "some" who got the "as high as 39%" notice recently. 39%. I finally won something, only in reverse.

Between health insurance and mortgage payments, we pay around $50K a year... just for those two big fat money gobblers (L.A. area real estate is not cheap).

At least our house payments go toward something that actually, you know, protects us and provides a safe haven.

The independent senator from Connecticut, who infuriated Democrats by backing Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for president, told The Hill, “I’m trying to have a more governmental/legislative, less political year.”

"More governmental"? What does that mean? Maybe he meant, more "mental"... if that's even possible.

Washington (CNN) – Count White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs among a growing group of Democratic press operatives who have recently joined the microblogging site Twitter.

The top White House spokesman set up his Twitter account Saturday, Gibbs confirmed to CNN; Gibbs goes by the Twitter handle @PressSec on the popular service.

Gibbs’ arrival on Twitter comes as a number of his colleagues in the Democratic communications apparatus have also joined the site which allows users to broadcast short messages.

In mid January, Deputy White House Press Secretary Bill Burton (@billburton44) began using a previously dormant Twitter account.

And last month, President Obama made history when he personally clicked the send button on a tweet from the @RedCross account while on a visit to the Washington headquarters of the Red Cross.

Indiana gets $1.3M more from Stimulus to help low-income seniors

Sounds like a win/win to me- give them something to do and train them to make a wage that will help to keep the heat on. What, no squawking from Mitch Daniels? Actually the opposite.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Division of Aging is getting nearly $1.3 million in additional funding from the U.S. Labor Department of Labor to provide job training and other help for older, low-income workers.

The federal stimulus grant will go to the Senior Community Service Employment Program. It provides part-time, community service-based job training for unemployed, low-income persons age 55 or older.

Aging Director Faith Laird says the added funding will allow her agency to serve seniors who otherwise wouldn't receive services. She says the money is needed during such tough economic times.

Brown for President in 2012? No Joke, Supporters Say

By GottaLaff

http://reason.com/assets/mc/ngillespie/2010_01/Scott-Brown-new3.jpg

Maybe it would be good to see how well he plays with others in the U.S. Senate first. And since when is the "family values" GOP suddenly into former naked centerfolds as presidential material?

He's only been a senator for a week but the drumbeat already has begun for Scott Brown to run for president in 2012.

[...] Brown's supporters have launched a Facebook page devoted to discussing a potential presidential bid.

They've also scooped up several "Scott Brown for President" domain names, including scottbrown2012.com, scottbrown2016.com and scottbrownforpresident.com -- a site that offers "Scott Brown for President" bumper stickers.

And a new Gallup poll ranks Brown fourth among 11 potential GOP presidential contenders who voters would like to see as the nominee.

"He is the fresh face, and he's new," Republican strategist and pollster Kellyanne Conway told Fox News. "The whole idea that you don't have enough experience, I think that went out the window with the age of the Obama presidency."

Yes, but can he partake in a Q and A without crib notes scrawled on his hand? That's the real test.

Obama to roll out first nuclear plant loan guarantee next week

By GottaLaff

Why? So we can create more waste that we can't store? That will last a kajillion years?

President Obama will next week announce a federal loan guarantee for utility giant Southern Company to build two new nuclear reactors in Georgia, an administration official said.

The Energy Department loan guarantee will be the first devoted to nuclear plant construction under a program authorized in a 2005 energy law.

President Obama and I do not see eye to eye on this at all.

The "new beginning between the U.S. and Muslims around the world"

As it should be:

President Barack Obama appointed a special envoy Saturday to the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the 57-nation organization that calls itself the "collective voice of the Muslim world."

He is Rashad Hussein, an Indian-American Muslim who has been a deputy associate White House counsel, described by Obama as "an accomplished lawyer and a close and trusted member of my White House staff." [...]

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be speaking Sunday at the 7th annual forum and Obama took the opportunity Saturday to laud the event and reiterate what he calls the "new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world" - a relationship that he says has been marred by "misunderstanding and mistrust."

VIDEO: While Obama Making Plans to Use Executive Power, Rachel Maddow Plans a Filibuster Challenge

By GottaLaff

Here's a thought: A presidential directive to remove all the Rushpublics from Congress.

Okay, daydream over. God I hate reality sometimes. It gets in the way of my fantasies:

With much of his legislative agenda stalled in Congress, President Obama and his team are preparing an array of actions using his executive power to advance energy, environmental, fiscal and other domestic policy priorities. [...]

“We are reviewing a list of presidential executive orders and directives to get the job done across a front of issues,” said Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff.

Any president has vast authority to influence policy even without legislation, through executive orders, agency rule-making and administrative fiat. And Mr. Obama’s success this week in pressuring the Senate to confirm 27 nominations by threatening to use his recess appointment power demonstrated that executive authority can also be leveraged to force action by Congress. [...]

But Mr. Obama has to be careful how he proceeds because he has been critical of both Mr. Clinton’s penchant for expending presidential capital on small-bore initiatives, like school uniforms, and Mr. Bush’s expansive assertions of executive authority, like the secret program of wiretapping without warrants. [...]

Another drawback of the executive power strategy is that actions taken unilaterally by the executive branch may not be as enduring as decisions made through acts of Congress signed into law by a president.[...]

But the White House argued that Mr. Obama’s choices have been held up more than Mr. Bush’s and left open the prospect of giving recess appointments to some of those still held up, including Craig Becker, a labor lawyer whose nomination for a seat on the National Labor Relations Board has been blocked.

If the stalling tactics continue,” said Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, “he’s not ruling out using recess appointments for anybody that he’s nominated.

Good. About time. Do it. I want Dawn Johnsen in. Now.

Meantime, Rachel Maddow has her own ideas: The Filibuster Challenge.

A Sun Halo Over Cambodia
Credit & Copyright: Nagy Attila
Explanation: Have you ever seen a halo around the Sun? This fairly common sight occurs when high thin clouds containing millions of tiny ice crystals cover much of the sky. Each ice crystal acts like a miniature lens. Because most of the crystals have a similar elongated hexagonal shape, light entering one crystal face and exiting through the opposing face refracts 22 degrees, which corresponds to the radius of the Sun halo.

Inevitable: Palin bars media from two upcoming Florida events

By GottaLaff

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.bloggingstocks.com/media/2008/12/blog-money-winners-sarah-palin-200x267.jpg

Why in the world would SoundBite McWTF want to put a lid on the media? It's not like she doesn't have pearls of wisdom to impart... as long as they're written on her hand. By someone else. That she should regret.

But doesn't:
Fox News contributor Sarah Palin will make two high-profile appearances in Central Florida next month, but the press will not be welcomed. Palin’s camp has barred the media from recording or photographing the former governor’s speeches, so if reporters want to attend, they’ll have to buy a ticket like anyone else. (Prices are between $150 and “at least” $250.) The Orlando Sentinel reports that the unusual decision was made by Palin’s handlers, not local organizers.

I've actually posted about the increased activity of OFA over the past few weeks, but this is more confirmation of their stepping up the effort to get the White House message out:

The successor to President Obama's campaign group, now a project of the Democratic National Committee, is expanding its online outreach efforts, according to a Democratic official and an advertisement posted on the jobs board at MediaBistro.com.

The notice, posted more than a week ago, seeks full-time "Email campaigners" based in Washington, D.C.; the campaigners will be "responsible for planning, writing, and executing grassroots campaigns to advance the President's agenda for change."

At least they won't get blocked by the GOP.

When Fake News Goes Viral

By GottaLaff

If only fake news were the Jon Stewart kind:

The New York Observer notes that 13 different news organizations ran unsourced stories about the supposed blockbuster New York Times story about New York Gov. David Paterson -- even before the governor issued his now famous denial.

Walter Shapiro: "Sadly, this is what happens when the old-media arrogance of The New York Times -- a newspaper that will do things its own way on its own schedule -- collides with the sex sells, rumors-are-reality sleaziness of the new media. Isn't the 21st century great?"
This reminds me of Keith Olbermann's explanation of how a ClusterFox meme gets started. One of their punditiots opines, it's picked up as a "some say" by their "news" [sic] team, and that in turn gets reported as "news" by the rest of the media.

Then, the more often the story is repeated, the more credibility it is given, which makes about as much sense as ... well, a 2010 vote for Michele Bachmann.

Lobbyist spending jumps 5% in 2009 despite recession

By GottaLaff

The wealth has been spread alright... all in one direction:

Lobbyists enjoyed record revenues while the rest of the country was struggling amid deep recession, according to a report out Friday.

Last year saw a more than 5 percent increase in lobbying expenditures as compared to 2008, said the Center for Responsive Politics' campaign finance watchdog report.

And guess who gets first prize!
The healthcare debate took up much of the oxygen in Washington last year. So not surprisingly, the pharmaceutical and health products industry spent a record amount last year — close to $266.8 million — on federal lobbying.

That is the biggest lobbying expenditure ever by a single industry in one year, according to the report.

Aww, no wonder they had to raise my son's health insurance rates 39% this year. Someone has to pay for all those pesky meds. The industry needed the money, and they felt comfortable coming to my kid with their M#$@%&! F%@*%! hands out.

I'm thrilled to bits and pieces that we could F$@&*! help them out of their F&#*$! financial hole. I'm sure they'll be there for us when we're in need.

Poll-itics: Blame Bush

By GottaLaff

It's not all good news for President Obama, but this was interesting:

While the president is showing signs of vulnerability on his handling of the economy — a majority of respondents say he has yet to offer a clear plan for creating jobs — Americans blame former President George W. Bush, Wall Street and Congress much more than they do Mr. Obama for the nation’s economic problems and the budget deficit, the poll found.

They credit Mr. Obama more than Republicans with making an effort at bipartisanship, and they back the White House’s policies on a variety of disputed issues, including allowing gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military and repealing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

Psst! John Sidney McCain, spread the word: "Blame Bush".

Tea Partier Charged With Stockpiling Weapons: Palin on "righteous Mission from God"

By GottaLaff

Kate Glass/Gloucester Daily Times A stockpile of weapons and ammunition was found at the Bridge Street home of Gregory Girard on Tuesday night.
/ Staff Photographer

Need more proof of how HateSpew McSmileyFace inspires her followers? Why, here's some now:

The Massachusetts man charged this week with stockpiling weapons after saying he feared an imminent "Armageddon" appears to have been active in the Tea Party movement, and saw Sarah Palin, who he said is on a "righteous 'Mission from God,'" as the only figure capable of averting the destruction of society.

As we reported yesterday, Gregory Girard, a Manchester technology consultant, was found with a stash of military grade weapons, explosive devices including tear gas and pepper ball canisters, camouflage clothing, knives, handcuffs, bulletproof vests and helmets, and night vision goggles, say police. They believe Girard, who pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, was "preparing for domestic and political turmoil," and feared martial law would soon be imposed.

Girard's wife said her husband had recently told her: "Don't talk to people, shoot them instead," and "it's fine to shoot people in the head because traitors deserve it."

Oh, this guy's a real peach. Here's something he posted. Please note the "inner city youths" button:
I have studied the "National Security Force," which is Obama's name for the secret police force he is creating. I have read the new law that gives them the right to operate as an extension of the DoD, carrying firearms, and executing search warrants, executing arrest warrants, and the like. Needless to say, it's a secret police force of some kind, and it appears likely to be created from inner city youths.
So much for that folksy keepy America-y safey thing, eh Sarah? And about that swell suggestion of yours to let the Tea Tantrumers go leaderless... mob rule is so much more preferable. At least Girard had enough lethal weapons for nearly everyone.

Oh, but sharing them would be veering smack dab into socialism. Never mind.

There's a whole lot more here, at TPM.

In that capacity, his primary job was shepherding the administration's agenda through the legislative process. Ugly as that process was, Emanuel -- and more to the point, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi -- did a fairly masterful job at it. In the Senate, Democrats got all 60 of their members to sign onto the same large, controversial bill. That's a legislative achievement [unprecedented] in modern times. Bill Clinton didn't manage it on any bills of this size and scope, and neither did George W. Bush."

Clinton leaves hospital after heart procedure

Damn good to hear.
New York (CNN) – Former President Bill Clinton left the hospital Friday morning after doctors performed a procedure to restore blood flow in one of his coronary arteries, longtime friend Terry McAuliffe told CNN.

Clinton, 63, was hospitalized at New York-Presbyterian Hospital's Columbia campus after experiencing brief periods of discomfort in his chest over several days, according to Dr. Allan Schwartz, the hospital's chief of cardiology.

Two stents were used to restore blood flow to a coronary artery Thursday after images revealed that a bypass graft - part of a quadruple bypass surgery that Clinton underwent in 2004 - was blocked, Schwartz said.

An electrocardiogram and a blood test showed no evidence of a heart attack, Schwartz said.

House GOP document: We won showdown with President Obama

By GottaLaff

How deluded are these people? Black is white, up is down, Palin is smart:

House Republicans won their televised debate with President Barack Obama last month, according to a GOP document distributed to lawmakers on Thursday. [...]

In the document titled “Recent Public Surveys, Fielded Post Baltimore Retreat,” Republican leaders focused on Obama’s job approval, generic ballot matchups, party brand image and issue handling. [...]

Democrats dispute the Republican claims.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) spokesman Ryan Rudominer said, “No amount of spin and arrogance from these House Republicans, who continue to be caught taking credit for president Obama’s recovery policies they led the fight against, will change the fact that the president took on the entire Republican Conference and walked away the winner.”

Meanwhile, a New York Times/CBS poll released this week shows that Obama has an edge over the GOP in public support.

Oh puh-leeze. GOP: Straws, grasping.

VIDEO: Mitch McConnell breaks down and sobs on Senate floor

Um, alrighty then:

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is not known for his emotional outbursts, especially in public, but he wept openly on the Senate floor Thursday as he spoke about Kyle Simmons, his outgoing chief of staff.

This is all the e-mail alert said:

WASHINGTON (AP) AP source: Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., will not seek reelection.
More details when I see them.

UPDATE:

The decision by the eight-term congressman comes less than a month after a stunning Republican upset in the race for the Massachusetts Senate seat his late father, Edward Kennedy, held for almost half a century.

Patrick Kennedy has been in and out of treatment for substance abuse since crashing his car outside the U.S Capitol in 2006.

That's most of the information they added, nothing about why.

Billy Tauzin resigns as president of pharma group

By GottaLaff

http://positivesharing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/quit.jpg

Via an e-mail alert, meet Billy the Quitter:
Former Rep. Billy Tauzin is resigning as president of the drug trade group Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. Under Tauzin's leadership, the group cut a deal with the White House on health care reform which would have capped the industry's total costs under the planned legislation to $80 billion over 10 years.

For more information...http://www.politico.com
Now what would have made him do that? I admit, I'm not well-versed. Any ideas?

UPDATE, via an L.A. Times e-mail alert:
A source close to Tauzin, a garrulous former Louisiana congressman who once chaired the influential House Energy and Commerce Committee, said Tauzin left his post voluntarily after nearly 5 1/2 years in the job "because he wants to do other things with his life."

The source, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak about the retirement, said that Tauzin was asked to stay by a majority of board members and that the decision was personal.

However, Tauzin has been under fire from the left and the right -- and from the mainstream of his fellow business lobbyists, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

More soon at: http://www.latimes.com/

He should have done "other things with his life" a long time ago.

Senate Confirms 27 Obama Nominees

By GottaLaff

From the Department of It's About Time But What About the Rest?

Before leaving for the President’s Day break, the Senate tonight confirmed — by unanimous consent — 27 of President Obama’s nominees to federal positions, under a threat made earlier this week by the president that he might make recess appointments not requiring Senate votes. None of these seemed controversial; the senators approved these amid a backlog of presidential nominations and holds on some.

However:
After the Senate’s moves, the White House tonight issued a statement by Mr. Obama, in which he welcomed the votes, and seemed to signal he would not be making recess appointments anytime soon.

Here's an excerpt from his statement:
While this is a good first step, there are still dozens of nominees on hold who deserve a similar vote, and I will be looking for action from the Senate when it returns from recess. If they do not act, I reserve the right to use my recess appointment authority in the future.

The list of confirmed nominees is here.

Like pulling teeth.

BREAKING: Bill Clinton update, liveblog

By GottaLaff

Press conference:

Spokesperson: He's in good spirits, which must be why they've practically eulogized him for the last 4 hours (sarcasm). Chelsea and Hillary are with him, by the way.

Dr. Alan Schwartz:

He had some recurring symptoms, although brief ones. He came in for and EKG and blood test. NO evidence of heart attack or damage to the heart.

He had blockage, so he got 2 stents in the artery that had been grafted earlier during the bypass. All went smoothly. He's up and walking around, visiting with the family, in good spirits and should go home tomorrow.

This was not a result of his life style or diet. He's been doing everything right. His cholesterol etc. are excellent. This is part of the "natural history" of his bypass graft. After 5-6 years, this can happen.

He's less susceptible to future heart attacks.

The surgery involved the main artery in front of the heart. Now he's speaking doctor... have no idea what he's saying.

Prognosis: Excellent.

It's a chronic condition with no cure, but treatments and procedures work. He responded to his warning symptoms properly.

He had some vague chest discomfort, no pains, and when it became repetitive, he went to the doctor.

He can be back to work at the office Monday. This is not considered a "wake up call" because he's done everything right, and this graft treatment was NOT related to anything he did.

Harry Reid angers Republicans: Kills Baucus bill, narrows focus of jobs legislation

By GottaLaff

http://www.thehotjoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/a_nreid_0122.jpg

So he couldn't get tough with the GOP on the health care bill? I'd love to have seen him get the Rushpublics riled up sometime... last.... spring. Heaven knows they've gotten us riled up non-stop for a year now:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is rewriting a jobs bill after Democrats complained of too many concessions to Republicans.

Reid announced Thursday that he would cut drastically back on the jobs bill Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) introduced only hours earlier, essentially overruling the powerful chairman.

Ding!

The Democratic leadership aide disputed the notion that Reid had yanked the rug out from under Baucus, noting that Reid has decided to keep the four core provisions of Baucus’s legislation.

The aide said Reid decided to simplify the legislation to “short-circuit potential criticism from one side or the other,” referring to potential Democratic and Republican critics.

Reid’s bill also does not extend unemployment and COBRA benefits that many in both parties want; an aide to the majority leader said those extensions would be handled in a separate bill.

For what's in and what's out, follow the link.

Here's the money line, via Jay Rockefeller:

Rockefeller predicted the Republicans would not support Reid’s revised proposal.

Why would the Republicans vote for something?” Rockefeller said.

Double ding!

Adviser Watch: Sarah Palin's Brain Trust to Nowhere

By GottaLaff

http://rlv.zcache.com/brain_trust_keychain-p146313322419924481qjfk_400.jpg

TPM has a very informative post up about who's pulling MoldMe McNeedsHelp's marionette strings:

As Sarah Palin relaunches her image for the next stage of her political career, there's a small set of advisers who are shaping the former governor's policy positions and public persona.

The group, a brain trust of sorts, includes Randy Scheunemann, the lobbyist who advised McCain on foreign policy and was one of the architects of the Iraq War, and Kim Daniels, a little-known conservative attorney who specializes in "rights of conscience" health care issues.

And she complains about President Obama's "ties to lobbyists"? Really?

Oh, and let's not forget the former Jew-counting Nixonite, Fred Malek:

Fred Malek: An extremely successful private equity investor who served as an aide to President Nixon (and famously played a central role in the Nixon Jew-counting episode in the early 1970s), Malek describes himself as a friend of Palin. The Times reports that he has been advising Palin on "political matters."

More of her merry band-o'-weenies: Robert Barnett, who advised George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Benazir Bhutto, and Bob Woodward; and the ubiquitous Mary Matalin.

Much more info about her inner circle, aka her Brainless Trust, can be found here.

Tancredo’s Literacy Test Idea Endorsed By Right-Wing Immigration Activist

By GottaLaff

Keith Olbermann put this issue into perspective so clearly that even this guy could understand it.

Okay, maybe not:

Yeh Ling-Ling, an ethnically Chinese, Vietnam-born, Cambodian-raised, France and Taiwan educated, naturalized U.S. citizen has publicly endorsed Tancredo’s proposal. In an email exchange with reporter Michael Roberts, Ling-Ling wrote:

I believe that in order to be granted U.S. citizenship, immigrants must have a good knowledge of spoken and written English, without any exception. Literacy tests should be given to all U.S. voters — native-born and naturalized citizens alike, so that their votes can accurately reflect their will.

I head a national tax-exempt non-profit organization whose leaders and supporters are racially and politically diverse, including minority immigrants. We do not and may not endorse or oppose political candidates or parties. We believe that some sort of immigration moratorium will be needed so that we can put American job seekers, welfare recipients and non-violent prison inmates to work.

Now back to the Bill Clinton TV marathon already in progress.
