Was Sarah Palin REALLY Miss Wasilla?

By GottaLaff

Here's an excerpt from Gryphen, who has much, much more at his place:

And just to make this information even more surreal. The girl who is listed as the REAL Miss Wasilla 1984, is the sister of my high school girlfriend!
Was that enough of a tease?

Did Barbie McLipSchmutz lie ... again? Was she not as congenial as she claimed? And who the heck is Gryphen's ex-flame's sister?

For answers to those questions and many more, stay tuned for the next episode of "As the Quitter Turns".

"Shannyn Moore won’t talk to conservatives. Too afraid..."

By GottaLaff

My pal Shannyn Moore has a post up at her place, and this paragraph made me smile:

This week’s taping of Moore Up North was delicious. While driving downtown to Bernie’s Bungalow, I heard a RWNJ talker on one of the radio stations tell his listeners that liberals like Shannyn Moore won’t talk to conservatives. Too afraid…no game…whatever. I laughed and switched back to NPR. This weeks entire panel consisted of Conservative, Republican, Elected Representatives. Oh, and my favorite Conservative, my Pop, was there with my more liberal mother for their first taping! Makes you wonder what else that radio mouth lies about.
The post goes on from there about a Republican who reviews her show, so please go read the rest here.

But don'tcha love the assumptions RWNJs make? And yet they refuse to go on shows like Shannyn's or Rachel Maddow's. Because, you know, they're probably "too afraid... no game...whatever."

Massachusetts Senate Race is a Toss Up

By GottaLaff

Um, exsqueeze me?

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Massachusetts finds Scott Brown (R) leads Martha Coakley (D), 48% to 47%, and is "buoyed by a huge advantage with independents and relative disinterest from Democratic voters in the state."

"Here's the reality: the Republicans and GOP leaning independents are going to come out and vote for Scott Brown. There's no doubt about that. But there's also a much larger pool of potential Democratic voters in the state. If Coakley can get them out, she wins. But this race is well past the stage where Democrats can take it for granted that will happen. It will be fascinating to see what happens the final ten days and we'll do a second poll on the race next weekend."
Democrats, are you listening? Don't get lackadaisical now, we can't afford it. Rev up and vote. And rev up other Democrats to vote.

A Republican cannot, must not, take over "Uncle Teddy" Kennedy's seat. It's a simple as that.

VIDEO: Harry Connick Jr. Calls Out Blackface Jackson Family on Aussie TV

By GottaLaff

Much more here:

A few months ago, Harry Connick Jr. was in Australia for a reunion with his dear old gang on a TV variety series called Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

More like Hey Hey It's Racism:
The Jackson Jive, all Afro wigs and black face paint, led by their late superstar brother, Michael, done up with a pasty clown visage and aviator sunglasses. Not cool, said Connick: “If they turned up looking like that in the United States, it’d be like Hey Hey There’s No More Show,” the crooner spat, giving the group a score of zero in the episode’s mock-talent competition. (The Aussie judge beside him was much more forgiving, allowing for a smile and a 7.)
To the host's credit, he did apologize... after the fact:
I know that to your countrymen, that’s an insult to have a blackface routine like that on the show, so I do apologize.” Connick thanked him, adding, “I know it was done humorously, but we’ve spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons, that when we see something like that, we take it really to heart."
You know why? Because it's not 1830 any more.

After today's post about KFC's ad, one wonders what's up with Australia's racial attitudes these days. And by "these days" I mean 2009. The present. Post 1830.
The sketch brought international backlash with some US bloggers describing Australia as a "racist" country, while other news outlets said the Jackson Jive was "vile" and "disgusting". [...]

Marina Hyde from Britain's Guardian newspaper described Australia was "the world's most savagely self-parodic country,” and introduced the skit as, “news of an important breakthrough in race relations". [...]

"In Australia, of course, [blacking up] is perfectly acceptable, and we thank the nation for yet another important contribution to the annals of human culture."
Connick went on to say:
"If I knew that was going to be part of the show, I probably - I definitely - wouldn’t have done it.”
You know who would have? These people (click on images to enlarge):

Roger Ailes worries about terrorist attacks on Fox

By GottaLaff

The New York Times took a look-see at ClusterFox's Roger Ailes and found all kinds of treasures.

Apparently, Roger Ailes was not happy that Rupert "Aaarh!" Murdoch was thinking about a New York Post endorsement of Obama during the 2008 election, so he threatened to quit. Know what that got him? $23,000,000.

The Post endorsed McCain/Palin.

Remind me to hold his wallet.

Mr. Ailes, the son of a foreman at the Packard Electric plant in Warren, Ohio, described his upbringing with three words: “God, country, family” and said that credo was responsible for the success of Fox News.
He forgot "fear".
[T]he 9/11 attacks had a profound effect on Mr. Ailes. They convinced him that he and his network could be terrorist targets.
Roger is a vewwwy vewwwy fwightened wabbit. He surrounds himself with corporate-provided security. Would Faux provide any other kind?
He travels to and from work in a miniature convoy of two sport utility vehicles. A camera on his desk displays the comings and goings outside his office, where he usually keeps the blinds drawn. [...]

A sign outside his house shows an illustration of a gun and advises visitors that it is under video surveillance.
So this is where Blackwater employees wind up once they're done killing Iraqis.

VIDEO: "Butt sniffer" SteeleFail interview with Tea Bagger radio host

By GottaLaff

Via Think Progress:

When Tea Baggers get angry, they get even more vile than usual, and that's sayin' something. Oh, but you already knew that.

As I posted yesterday, Michael Steele stood up ABC News. But there's more! He also blew off conservative Tea Baggy radio personality Dana Loesch, who tweeted her wrath. And in another tweet...

She also gave props to Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill (MO) for keeping her interview, writing, “So out of @clairecmc and @chairmanmsteele , McCaskill is the one who keeps her interview. #steelefail”
And how did she get even? Because, as we all know, acceptance isn't the Tea Baggers' strong suit. There were bound to be consequences. And consequences there were!

She interviewed herself... as Steele. And what an interview it was. Loud, strident, mocking... and ruthless. Why, she even shut herself up-- as Steele.

Let's just say Dana's not a big fan.

On the other hand, Michael Steele has become her new imaginary playmate, so maybe there's a reconciliation in their future. After all, she can't fight with her alter ego forever. That can wear a girl/guy out.

VIDEOS: Hey Rudy, can you hear them NOW?

By GottaLaff

Back in 2007, our co-editor Cliff Schecter asked me to write up a piece on Rudy Giuliani. It was one of my first efforts. I decided to dig it up and re-post it, what with Rudy being all over the news again.

"Mayor 9/11" was never the hero he (and others) made himself out to be. And in the video below, Rachel Maddow points out that, based on his recent memory lapses/blantant lies, his political career is over:

Now let's take a trip back to yesteryear and flash back to an expose I did on Mayor Noun, Verb, Lie Eleven. Here is my original post:

On September 11th, 2001, this was heard from a police helicopter hovering over the World Trade Center:

''About 15 floors down from the top, it looks like it's glowing red,'' the pilot of one helicopter, Aviation 14, radioed at 10:07 a.m. ''It's inevitable.''

Orders were given to evacuate. There was just one hitch. One fatal hitch:

Yet most firefighters never heard those warnings, or earlier orders to get out. Their radio system failed frequently that morning. Even if the radio network had been reliable, it was not linked to the police system. And the police and fire commanders guiding the rescue efforts did not talk to one another during the crisis.

At least 121 firefighters died as a result.

Now, after months of grief, both the Fire and Police Departments are approaching the end of delicate internal reviews of their responses to the attack. Those reviews have concluded that major changes are needed in how the agencies go about their work and prepare for the next disaster, senior officials say.

So, let's see...how could this have happened? Where do we begin? Got it! At the top. The management, maybe?

A six-month examination by The Times found that the rescuers' ability to save themselves and others was hobbled by technical difficulties, a history of tribal feuding and management lapses that have been part of the emergency response culture in New York City and other regions for years.

And who was in charge? Why, it's as if it were almost yesterday...

Although Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani created the Office of Emergency Management in 1996 and spent nearly $25 million to coordinate emergency response, trade center officials said the agency had not conducted an emergency exercise there that included the Fire Department, the police and the Port Authority's emergency staff.

How's that whole wrapping-yourself-in-9/11-thing working out for you, Rudy?

Sally Regenhart, whose firefighter son died at the World Trade Center, contended that one of the reasons so many firefighters died on 9/11 was the inadequacy of the radios they carried – a situation for which she blamed Giuliani. [...] "He died because of the failures of the Giuliani administration – numerous failures but the most glaring one that contributed to his death was no radios . The radios they was given, he had no idea that they didn't work. He had no idea that they were the same ones that didn't work in 1993. He had no idea that he couldn't communicate with anyone in the World Trade Center."

Thomas Von Essen, the city's fire commissioner from 1996 through 2001, and a former president of the main fire union:

''But you have to start thinking about the reality of the world that we live in today. And that demands better leadership, more accountable leadership, a better-trained leadership, a more disciplined leadership that then filters down to a better-trained and more disciplined set of troops.''

See, Rudy, just being in a city that gets hit by terrorists doesn't qualify you to lead the city...let alone an entire country. The father of another fallen firefighter:

"One hundred and twenty one firefighters in the north tower died that day. Giuliani now says he was a hero. But, all he did was run, that day."

Rudy was on the streets because he put the Office of Emergency Management's command center at 7 World Trade Center . He had nowhere to go. Now there's the kind of judgment I want to see in a world leader, don't you?

On Friday, Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said the city intended to create a radio channel that could be shared by police officers and firefighters, among other changes. ''There is no question there were communications problems at this catastrophic incident,' ' he said.

Bernard B. Kerik, the police commissioner at the time, said he did not believe that any communication problems between the agencies had significantly affected their performance. ' 'I was not made aware that day that we were having any difficulty coordinating,'' he said.

This is the same Bernie Kerik who had ties to organized crime , been sued for sexual harassment, and had employed an undocumented alien as a domestic servant. The very same one who Rudy recommended for the job of Secretary of Homeland Security. Yeah, he's credible. About as credible as Giuliani taking a "spontaneous" phone call from his wife.

Battalion Chief Joseph Pfeifer was the first chief to reach the north tower after the first plane crashed. He sent fire companies, including one led by his brother, Lt. Kevin Pfeifer, up the stairs of the building, but when he went to use his two-way radio to communicate with them, guess what failed to work? His brother didn't survive.

After both planes had struck, Assistant Chief Joseph Callan called an order in to clear the building.

Virtually no one answered his call. It seemed that few people, apart from those standing near him, heard it. Chief Peter Hayden, who was at the scene, said: ''We had ordered the firefighters down, but we weren't getting acknowledgments. We were very concerned about it.''

Let's recap: The radios the firefighters used that day were identical to the ones they used at the trade center eight years earlier.

''It's a disgrace,'' he said. ''The police are talking to each other. It's a no-brainer: Get us what they're using. We send people to the moon, and you mean to tell me a firefighter can't talk to a guy two floors above him?''

No, a firefighter can't. But America's Player Mayor can talk to his third wife during a political speech. It's obvious that to Rudy, the only kind of communication that's important is the self-serving kind.

Rudy is now "Noun, Verb, Toast".

Staffers Knew of John Edwards Affair

By GottaLaff

Marc Ambinder quotes from John Heilemann's and Mark Halperin's book Game Change, the same book that called out O'Palin for her failure to remember Joe O'Biden's last O'name.

My mind keeps drifting back to Chris Kofinis (who I enjoy a lot when he's on Countdown, et al.) and what he says about his former boss when he's not on air:

Not only, it turns out, did many senior Edwards staffer suspect that John was having an affair, several confronted John Edwards about it, and came away believing the rumors. At least three campaign aides resigned because of their knowledge of the affair well before the national media picked up on those early National Enquirer stories." [...]

The authors describe a moment where Elizabeth, in a such a state of fury, deliberately tears her blouse in the parking lot of a Raleigh airport terminal, 'exposing herself. 'Look at me,' she wailed at John and then staggered, nearly falling to the ground.' (That's page 142.)
And that didn't make it to ClusterFox or TMZ? No amateur cell phone journalists caught that?

I can't begin to imagine what Elizabeth and the kids went through... nor what the Democratic party would have gone through had Edwards won the primary. "Disgusting cad" doesn't begin to describe him.

And what happens to sleazy politicians like him who get busted after deceiving voters, cheating on their wives, and hurting their children? Their legacies are defined by scandal and the pain they've caused. Via New York magazine:
"For all the high drama of the Obama-Clinton battle and the historic import of the former's general-election victory over McCain, Edwards's story is equally, lastingly resonant: an archetypal political tragedy in which the very same qualities that fuel any presidential bid -- ego, hubris, vanity, neediness, a kind of delusion -- became all-consuming and self-destructive. And in which the gap between public facade and private reality simply grew too vast to bridge."
He could have done so much more good; he was well on his way. But as so many in positions of power do ::coughTigercough:: he believed he was invincible and let his ego, notoriety, and, well, Little Johnny take over.

What a waste.

Romney Voted in Massachusetts Election from Son's Address

By GottaLaff

Willard, Willard, how many homes do you really need? Oh, of course. What was I thinking? A dedicated one for voting purposes is a must:

TPM: "Despite selling his only home in Massachusetts, former Gov. Mitt Romney (R) voted last month in the state's Republican primary to choose a candidate for Sen. Ted Kennedy's seat using his son's address and has already mailed in a ballot for the Jan. 19 special election."
More via TPM:
Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said despite selling his home in Belmont last year, Romney never gave up his Massachusetts residency. When he is in the state he stays with his son Tagg.
I understand his Residential Consultant is Ann Coulter.

NRSC to back Bennett against conservative primary challengers

By GottaLaff

Rushpublics Eating Their Own can be fun... if you're a Democratic spectator:

The National Republican Senatorial Committee will back Sen. Robert Bennett (R-Utah) in his battle against the Club for Growth and conservative challengers. [...]

“The NRSC and Sen. Cornyn fully stand behind Sen. Bennett,” said Brian Walsh, spokesman for the committee. [...]

The Senate Republican campaign committee has pledged it would stay neutral in open-seat Republican primaries this election year.

The committee is backing Bennett because he is an incumbent. [...]

Supporting Bennett could subject the campaign committee to criticism from conservative activists, another reason why GOP officials may be hesitant to spend much money to protect him in a conservative primary.
And we wouldn't want to rile up them Tea Baggers. You know how they get when a bee gets under their Tea Bonnet.

Reid apologizes for Obama 'Negro dialect' comment

By GottaLaff

The future isn't looking too bright for ol' Harry these days:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid apologized Saturday following reports he had privately described then-candidate Barack Obama during the presidential campaign as a black candidate who could be successful thanks in part to his “light-skinned” appearance and speaking patterns "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."
Mark Halperin and John Heilemann's new book Game Change provided that little tidbit. Ouch.

That had no chance of ending well. Nor was there any way that it wouldn't make it into a book. Or the InterTubes. Or the Tee Vee Machine. Or this blog post.
I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words,” Reid said in a statement to CNN.

I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments.

I was a proud and enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama during the campaign and have worked as hard as I can to advance President Obama’s legislative agenda.”

He probably should have had the foresight, then, to realize his poor choice of words would be, ahem, unhelpful... especially to his own career... which could now extend into a stint at KFC?

KFC steps in a big bucket of racism

By GottaLaff

My pal Greg Skilling, over at the Examiner, had some fun with KFC's attempt to scramble for cover after airing an ad on Australian television portraying an obvious racial stereotype.

It featured supporters of the touring West Indian cricket team, and KFC somehow forgot that the Webertubes have a way of bringing embarrassing moments to light in the viraliest of ways:
What they said -

"KFC Australia apologises unreservedly for any offence caused which of course was wholly unintended."

Translation -

We're sorry some idiot exposed the latent racism within our company - please, please, please buy our chicken.

What they said -

"We unequivocally condemn discrimination of any type and have a proud history as one of the world's leading employers for diversity.

In 2009 Yum! Brands (the owner of KFC) was named as one of Black Enterprise magazine's '40 Best Companies for Diversity' for the fifth consecutive year. Yum! also received The National Society of Hispanic MBA's 2009 Brillante Award for Corporate Excellence which is presented to a corporation which fosters Hispanic leadership."

Translation -

Despite our racial faux pas, the folks here at KFC have several friends of African descent - Look! Here's a picture of one. Please, please, please buy our chicken.

Please read the whole thing here. It's way tastier and a whole lot healthier than KFC products are. One might even say, finger-lickin' good.

UPDATE, here is the ad in question:

Shallow Thoughts: Shut Up, Pat Buchanan edition

By GottaLaff

Today's Shallow Thought:

I was watching Alex Witt on MSNBC this morning as she discussed the 2010 elections with Pat Buchanan. She suggested that the Democrats would not be able to hold on to their 60-seat super majority, and asked "Uncle Pat", "Does that mean the government will come grinding to a halt?"

Pat Buchanan's response: "Hopefully."

MSNBC had no problem hiring this anti-American--not to mention racist-- windbag as a regular political analyst. Punditiots who advocate government failure should be given less, if any, air time, not more. Vigorous debate is a good thing, and freedom of speech should continue to be alive and well.

But to warmly welcome noxious obstructionists like Buchanan to the airwaves does not serve what's left of the news media well, because he does not inform, he infects. And that is destructive to a healthy democracy.
That was today's Shallow Thought. Thank you for wading in.

Airport Security Breach Guy charged with defiant trespassing! So there!

By GottaLaff

A few tweeters and I couldn't resist riffing off of this tweet:

"Defiant trespassing"? Who came up with that legal term, some law student parent of a toddler/rebellious teenager who got bored during Individual Liberties 101?

I tweeted, What is he, 2? Will he be grounded?

To which Tymlee responded: Defiant trespassing and over the top pouting.

DadaLives: At least! Hah! No flight for you!

Me: What next? Recalcitrant shoplifting?

PlutoniumPage: Maybe "unruly passengers" will be charged with "temper tantrums".

LaurieInQueens: Perhaps there is a lesser charge of "contrite trespassing," but he was JUST TOO DEFIANT! Always show remorse while trespassing, NOT DEFIANCE!! Let that be a lesson to us all.

"I've seen this horrible stuff on TV but never thought I'd be 'attacked' by these sickos"

By GottaLaff

One of our regular readers shared this chilling experience with us in Comments:
Today, Friday 01/08/10 at about 4:00PM Pacific, I took a package to be dropped off at my local Harbor City, CA 90710 post office...only to see 2 males, one white, one black, with a table (set up on the sidewalk directly in front of the walk out the front doors of the PO) covered in the Obama as hitler posters.

I *tried* to walk, head down up a different side walk, only to be yelled at by the white male.

It went down hill from there...he kept spewing facist Obama stuff...Obama is hitler...we're all going to forced prison labor camps...

...I basically just kept saying that they were sick...ignorant of WWII history and the crimes against humanity committed...etc.

The guy finally just turned his back to me...only to turn and yell FACIST at me as I was getting in my car.

Needless to say...I've been shaken since. I've seen this horrible stuff on TV but never thought that I would be "attacked" by any of these sickos.

I'm scared for our country.
And then he added:
I'm tell'n ya...my stomach was rolling, my hands were shaking and I think I was scared.

...if drinking and driving was legal, I would have pulled into Rite Aid and bought beer!
Some of you may remember when Mr. Laffy had a similar encounter.

Gee, somehow I doubt that this kind of sick behavior will win followers or change minds. What are they hoping to accomplish? And why did they yell at our Commenter? I'm guessing he wasn't wearing an Obama tee shirt, nor did he make the first move. They were the aggressors.

Publicly bullying a fellow citizen is a cowardly act that should be prohibited by law. How do these people live with themselves?

US to review court decision on Blackwater killings

By GottaLaff

http://static.crooksandliars.com/files/uploads/2008/08/blackwater.png

Earlier I posted about how much an Iraqi life is worth to Blackwater. And prior to that, I posted about charges being dismissed against them in the deadly 2007 shooting.

In fact, every post I write about Blackwater is jam packed with death and destruction, ethics vacuums, and overall creepiness. And yet the U.S. government still has them on their payroll.

Which is why I have my doubts that they this will lead to a satisfactory conclusion:
The US government said Friday it will review the decision by a US court to drop charges against American private security guards accused of killing 14 Iraqi civilians in an unprovoked attack in 2007.

"We respect the independence of the judiciary. The decision of the judge does not exonerate the defendants or necessarily terminate the proceedings," State Department spokesman PJ Crowley told reporters.

"The Department of Justice, in consultation with the State Department, will carefully review the judge's decision and assess all available legal options," said Crowley, the assistant secretary of state for public affairs.

Color me jaded.

Man removed from plane after security alert at Heathrow

By GottaLaff

Every time there is a terrorist incident, we get a rash of reports like this one:

An aircraft passenger was removed from a plane by counter-terrorism officers after uttering a hoax threat as it readied for take-off, it was reported tonight.

The unnamed white man was on an Emirates flight to Dubai taxiing at Heathrow when he made the comments, which were overheard by a fellow traveller.

Cabin crew were alerted and the pilot turned the jet around. Five armed officers boarded the aircraft and removed the man in handcuffs and a companion. More than one arrest was made, it was reported.

How utterly stupid can someone be to make a joke threat knowing how jumpy and on alert everyone is after Underpants Guy's crotch exploded?

And of course, this was costly since they had to turn around.

Not to mention the fear that must have rippled through the plane.

Oh, and there's those inconvenience and anger factors once everyone realized it was a hoax.

Brilliant move, unnamed white man. Pure comic genius. The Not Conan O'Brien show will contact you shortly, I'm sure.

Who was the 1st U.S. president to get a speeding ticket?

Ulysses S. Grant was the first seated President to receive a speeding ticket.

For a 26-year period between 1975 and 2001, every governor of North Carolina was named Jim.

From 1952 until 2008 (with the exception of 1964), every Republican Presidential ticket had on it a Bush, a Nixon, or a Dole.
Here's one: From 2001-2008, for the first time the White House was inhabited by the vice president.

Recovery Act has helped, stimulated growth/hiring. Clean Energy Manufacturing initiative has helped. Creates jobs, that pay well, can't be outsourced, and reduce dependence on foreign oil. And it's how to combat climate change.

Harnessing new forms of energy is defining challenge of this century. U.S. being outpaced by China. We spearheaded solar tech, but fallen behind Germany and Japan in producing it. We're beginning to do more here at home.

I welcome real competition around the world, but I don't want America to lose that competition. .. I don't want tech to be invented abroad. I want us to be a leader, THE leader in clean energy.

That's what this initiative will help us do... close the gap. Awarding 2.3 billion $ in tax credit to businesses who produce clean energy tech. Will create jobs, boost manufacturing, building new plants, upgrading old ones, doubling renewable power... built here. This is good for middle class families, security, planet.

Gives example of Iowa company benefitting from tax credit.

Initiative is so popular that we have more applicants than we can fund.

As part of jobs package that I'd like Congress to pass, I want to invest $5 billion more.

In letters I read at night, I hear from Americans facing hard times... lost jobs, etc... I'm confident that if we harness ingenuity, gain lead in clean energy, we can... [have a brighter future].

Michael Steele Abruptly Cancels Interview

By GottaLaff

Gee, can't imagine why. This is from Roll Call, which is subscription only, so we get the headline only:
Under fire from top donors and Congressional Republicans, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele on Friday abruptly canceled a scheduled noon interview with ABC News — the network that has played host to some of Steele’s more controversial statements.
He's an embarrassment to the party, himself, and anyone who is withing sneezing distance. But hey, he be da man!

Underpants Bomber indicted

By GottaLaff

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01550/UmarFaroukAbdulmut_1550255c.jpg

Per MSNBC, Underpants Guy plead "not guilty" during a very brief (no pun) 3 minute court session. It was reported that he was "wearing khaki pants" and spoke English and was clearly understood.

The real question was, did he go commando?

Bygones.

I'm not sure how we got through this alive. After all, this took place in an American court. Did his terrorist cooties escape through the air conditioner vent? Did the grand jury turn into Al Qaeda operatives? Did the terrorists win... again... under President Obama's watch? After all, it was Obama who was responsible for the 9/11 attack.

But then again, you know that, because Team Cheney is out there lying about it.

Here's more:
A grand jury indicted Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, on charges of trying to blow up a Detroit-bound plane on Christmas Day. The Nigerian was indicted on 6 counts, including attempted murder of the other 289 passengers and crew aboard the plane, and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.
He faces life in prison.

Blackwater to Iraqis: Your lives are worth $100K, take it or leave it

By GottaLaff

http://www.dvorak.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/blackwater.jpg

It's nice to know Blackwater values life so highly. And here I thought a human being's life was worth only a couple of hundred dollars. What was I thinking?
The security firm formerly known as Blackwater has reached a settlement in seven civil lawsuits filed against it by families of Iraqis killed during what the suits called "senseless slaughter" by company guards. [...]

In Baghdad on Thursday, a shooting victim who has not settled said he still wanted the guards prosecuted in criminal court.

"Iraqi blood is not that cheap," said Mehdi Abu Zaman, 45, who said he lost his sight after being shot. "The civil suit is not enough. There is no justification for this. If they gave me all the money in the world, my vision will not come back."

Another wounded man, Sami Hawas Hamoud Abu Iz, told the Associated Press that the company had offered $100,000 to each family of a person who died and $30,000 to those wounded. He said plaintiffs' lawyers told victims they might not receive anything if they did not agree to a settlement.
Brown lives are on special, apparently. As for wounded brown people? They're worth less than a Ford Taurus.

That Xe, er, Blackwater, er, Xe... they just ooze generosity and love of their fellow man:
The civil suits alleged that Blackwater "fostered a culture of lawlessness amongst its employees, encouraging them to act in the company's financial interests at the expense of innocent human life."

The suits alleged that some of the "shooters," as the plaintiffs said the guards were known, were "chemically influenced by steroids and other judgment-altering substances."

The suits accused Prince of making "a series of verbal and written statements that evidenced his support of the wanton killing of those of the Islamic faith."
Their consistent high regard for human life is illustrated here, too, via Jeremy Scahill.

Liveblogging Robert Gibbs briefing: The economy, more

By GottaLaff

Robert Gibbs: (forgive my shorthand... it's the only way I can get most of the convos down)

We knew this was gonna be a long road... ups and downs. There are some light spots that are at least encouraging... People have lost their jobs and are hurting.

Re: Gasoline prices rising... Yes, a concern to the president. He will make a statement.

Tapper: How worried is Obama about double dip recession?

Gibbs: He wakes up concerned every day, understands millions are hurting, whether last months job losses or present... He's not satisfied with where we were. He's not an economic prognosticator, but concerned about the economy, people hurting, stories he's heard for many, many years, creating environment to hire (re: small businesses, etc.)

Tapper: Gitmo... where are 6 you transferrred?

Gibbs: Not getting into transfers.

Tapper: Convert prison to supermax. Timetable?

Gibbs: No timetable. We'll work with Congress re: retrofitting, purchasing prison in Thomson, moving prisoners.

Ed Henry, CNN: Geithner should testify?

Gibbs: Geithner not involved in emails (NY Fed). He wasn't party to the decision being made.

Ed: 1000s more emails. Transparency?

Gibbs: I'll point you to Treasury. Emails did not involve him. Decision made by 2 people, didn't involve him. He has Obama's full confidence.

Chip Reid: President hasn't opened himself up to questions lately. Why?

Gibbs: You all reminded me of our "dramatic overexposure" last time.

Chip: That was then. [laughter]

MSNBC: Net job growth this year?

Gibbs: Look at trajectory, numbers, leads you to believe positive job growth, yeah.

MSNBC: Detainees... Yemen... Gitmo has been a black eye on US. Guarantees that other govt's will treat prisoners properly?

Gibbs: Won't discuss it today.... back and forth on something we're not gonna discuss today, don't want to do that.

VIDEO: Sheriff Joe Arpaio investigated by grand jury, officials confirm

By GottaLaff

Maybe the eventual legal consequences will include a mandatory pink underwear prison wardrobe (one can only imagine the malfunctions):

Two Maricopa County executives said Thursday they will appear before a federal grand jury next week to testify about allegations that Sheriff Joe Arpaio
and others in his office have abused their power.

County Manager David Smith and Deputy County Manager Sandi Wilson said they met with representatives from the U.S. Attorney's Office on Wednesday to prepare for the grand jury.

Who Says a Terrorist Attack Has to be In an Airplane? How the GOP Threatens Our Lives

By GottaLaff

Your Daily Dose of BuzzFlash, brought to you by my pal Mark Karlin:

Yesterday, I wrote a piece on how the GOP needs terrorists in order for the Republicans to terrorize Americans, because otherwise they have no platform other than basically eliminating taxes for the wealthy and corporations. [...]

While the Republicans are scaring us to death about preventing a plane being blown up, which is almost impossible in the long term, our entire nation is subject to attack from within without any screenings, scanners, or body searches. [...]

The GOP enables terrorism, because the entire party runs on one grade of gas: opportunism. [...]

In a series of year-long gun attacks on American by Americans who believe Glenn Beck and his right-wing media colleagues that white males are victims and guns are their defense against "Socialist Tyranny," the U.S. is confronting a possible "lone wolf" terrorist attack, and one might consider many of these shooting terrorist attacks by those who have heard the siren song of "patriotic" armed rebellion implied by Beck and his right-wing media cohorts.

The right-wing media, and particularly FOX and Limbaugh, have developed an encapsulated pathology that justifies attacks on the government because in their delusional worldview, the federal government is illegitimate. [...]

Some would call Dick Cheney and his "crew" traitors.

BuzzFlash would be among them, because we value life.

Pressure builds against mountaintop coal mining

By GottaLaff

(Via. Click on image to enlarge)

I hope the pressure is so pressurey that it pressures the administration into stopping this practice once and for all:
Mountaintop coal mining, which involves blowing up mountain peaks to get access to coal seams below, should be halted immediately because of growing evidence of its environmental and health threats, scientists urged Thursday in the journal Science.
Oh, what do scientists know, anyway? They clearly missed that whole "humans and dinosaurs co-existed" meme that's floating around the Conservaverse.
The paper, by a group of hydrologists, ecologists and engineers, presents a new and difficult challenge to the Obama administration, which has upset environmentalists by continuing to approve such permits even as it has promised to rely on scientific expertise in deciding whether to grant permits for the controversial practice.
So what's so wrong about blowing mountaintops off? It's not like they have feelings or anything.
Environmentalists say it degrades the landscape, destroys habitat and pollutes streams that get filled with debris from explosions.
Pfft. Big deal. It's much more important to make money sandwiches for the coal mining industry.
The issue is politically touchy for President Obama, who won his election with the support of environmentalists but also needs support from voters in coal states, such as Ohio, where he won by a narrow margin.
Everything is politically touchy for Obama. Drop in the bucket.

How about pollutertop mining? Now there's a real moneymaker.

Mid Day Distraction

Still too far out to call

Duh, dumbasses that need something to fill the airtime. Via Taegan-

Some perspective on that Republican GOP insiders poll that showed Mitt Romney the runaway favorite for president in 2012: James Barnes notes that four years ago, former Sen. George Allen (R-VA) narrowly edged Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) as the Republican insiders' favorite for 2008. We all know how that ended.

It wasn't much better on the Democratic side, where Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) was the favorite of Democratic Insiders for 2008 and Howard Dean (D) was the favorite for 2004.
