Poll-itics: Sestak Tied With Specter in Pennsylvania

By GottaLaff

Go Joe Sestak! He and Arlen Specter are now tied at 43% each with 13% still undecided.

This probably had a little something to do with it:

Tying Specter to Boy Georgie and Barbie McLipSchmutz in one 30 second ad? Ouch.

Part of his Wiki:

--Sestak has a 100% rating from NARAL and has stated his support for Roe v. Wade.[12]

--He is the only Pennsylvanian congressman to have a 100% rating from the League of Conservation Voters and PennEnvironment. He has also been endorsed by the Sierra Club. He voted for the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2007 and the New Direction for Energy Independence, National Security and Consumer Protection Act. He was also an original co-sponsor of the Climate Stewardship Act (H.R. 620) and the Safe Climate Act.[16]

--Sestak supports gun control and has a 100% rating from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence [17] and an F rating from the National Rifle Association[18]

Sestak has called for the reinstatement of the federal ban on assault weapons.[19]

--Congressman Sestak is an original co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act and supports the original version that includes card check. He created the Labor Advisory Committee to address the challenges facing working families in his district.[22]

Win, baby, win.

I see racist people...

Look who's running for governor of Florida:

CPR chief Rick Scott was ousted as a hospital exec amid a 1990s fraud probe, and the memo will alarm pro-reform forces, because it shows that the anti-reform camp is beginning to sense that victory is within reach on their top goal: Killing the public option.

Oh, you already knew that? Did you know all this?

R Lynn's Wiki:

Richard Lynn "Rick" Scott (born 1953 in Bloomington, Illinois) announced his candidacy for Florida governor on April 13, 2010.[1]

Scott is a healthcare industry executive and founder of Conservatives for Patients' Rights (CPR) which advertises against expanding the U.S. government's role in regulating the healthcare system but failed in its efforts to block healthcare reform.

Scott founded the Columbia Hospital Corporation in 1987. With Columbia HCA Chairman Thomas J. Frist, the brother of Senator Bill Frist, the company merged Columbia with Hospital Corporation of America in 1989 to form Columbia/HCA. Ten years later, Scott was ousted by the company's board of directors in the midst of the nation's biggest health care fraud scandal in which the company ultimately plead guilty to the nation's then largest Medicaid and Medicare fraud and paid a record fine of $1.7 billion dollars.[2][3][4] In 2001, Scott co-founded the Solantic Corporation, which operates walk-in medical care centers. He also owns Continental Structural Plastics, North America's largest industrial composites molder. [...]

CPR opposes the broad outlines of President Obama's health-care plans, and has hired Creative Response Concepts, a public relations firm which previously worked with the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

Isn't he the bee's knees? The cat's pajamas?

The liver worst?

Now he can add "racial profiler" to his resume. Congratulations, Ricky Lynn, you've topped yourself:

H/t: LynCKos for the title and for alerting me to Scott's tweet.

Ned Lamont (D) Now Lead in Connecticut Governor Race

Not going to jinx it, but things are looking a wee bit good.

A new Rasmussen survey in Connecticut finds Ned Lamont (D) leading Thomas Foley (R) in the race for governor, 42% to 35%.

Dan Malloy (D), who is battling Lamont for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, also edges Foley, 38% to 35%.

Just a month ago, both Democrats were running behind Foley.

Why Carly Fiorina will lose the election

By GottaLaff

Other than Carly Fiorina's evil Demon Sheep video that was so bad, so laughable, that it demanded its own DSCC parody; other than being a flop at HP; other than being fired from HP; other than being one of the worst CEOs in America; other than being part of the elite wealthy bonus-laden golden parachuted crowd; other than having been a John McCain (he lost, remember?) surrogate... if all that's not enough...

Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican nominee for vice president, is making her presence felt in California’s Senate race by backing Carly Fiorina, the former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard. [...]

In a statement, Ms. Palin called Ms. Fiorina “the commonsense conservative that California needs.”

“She’s not a career politician,” added Ms. Palin, the former Alaska governor. “She’s a businesswoman who has run a major corporation. She knows how to really incentivize job creation.”

Endorsa McBadChoice forgot three words: "She's a businesswoman who has failed at running a major corporation."

Endorsa's track record of getting people elected isn't the best. Carly's doomed.

Added bonus! When Carly Van MoneyBags was asked directly whether she thought Endorsa had the experience to run a big company like Hewlett-Packard, she said no. Perhaps Endorsa took that as a compliment.

Double added bonus! McBadChoice refused to endorse fellow Tea Party fan Chuck DeVore.

When will the Tea Baggers figure out that they've been exploited and will be tossed aside like used... tea bags?

Poll-itics: Both Crist and McCain leading

By GottaLaff

Those Tea Baggers just can't seem to find a winning candidate.

First a peppering of McCain:

A new DailyKos/Research 2000 poll in Arizona finds Sen. John McCain (R) leading primary challenger J.D. Hayworth (R), 48% to 36%.

In general election match ups, McCain leads Rodney Glassman (D). 48% to 35%. If Hayworth is the GOP nominee, he just edges Glassman, 43% to 42%.

Add a dash of Crist:

A new Mason Dixon poll in Florida finds Gov. Charlie Crist (I) leading a three-way race for U.S. Senate with 38%, followed by Marco Rubio (R) at 32% and Rep. Kendrick Meek (D) at 19%.

Now a splash of sour:

Key finding: "More than half of Crist's supporters are Democrats, who overwhelmingly approve of his defection from the GOP and recent veto of a controversial teacher tenure bill."

Pollster Brad Coker thinks these numbers will change, unless the Dems somehow turn on Meek. It's about name recognition.

And there we have it: A recipe for 2010 election fun. Stir it up, shake like crazy, bring to a boil, and bam!

Obey to Announce Retirement

By GottaLaff

Another one bites the dust:

Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.), chairman of the Appropriations Committee and the third-most-senior Member of the House, has decided he will not seek re-election in November.
His Wiki here.

Winning makes a difference

Other than the fact that Tea Baggers are mostly Republican (der), the big polling news just restates the obvious-

Republican Advantage in 2010 Voting Enthusiasm Shrinks

PRINCETON, NJ -- Republican registered voters' enthusiasm about voting in this year's midterm elections has declined significantly in recent weeks. As a result, Republicans' advantage over Democrats on this measure has shrunk from 19 points in early April to 10 points in the latest weekly aggregate.

In late March and early April, after Congress' passage of healthcare reform, both Republican and Democratic registered voters became more enthusiastic about voting in this year's elections. Republicans' enthusiasm peaked at 54% "very enthusiastic" in late March and early April, but is 43% in the latest weekly update, from April 27-May 2 -- essentially where it was before healthcare passed. By contrast, Democrats have more or less retained the slightly higher level of enthusiasm they showed right after the healthcare bill milestone.

Republicans' current 10-point lead is the smallest Gallup has measured since it began tracking 2010 election attitudes in March.

There is a God: Arpaio's A No-Go for Arizona Governor

By GottaLaff

http://www.nndb.com/people/890/000046752/arpaio_underwear.jpg

From the Dep't. of I Am Now a Believer:

[Maricopa County Sheriff Joe] Arpaio -- whose jurisdiction includes Phoenix, the capital and population center of the heavily Hispanic border state -- announced Monday afternoon that he will not join the crowded Republican primary for governor, and will instead run for a sixth term in his current high-profile position.

Oh goody! He just increased Gov. Janet "Papers Please" Brewer's chances! Weeee!

Well at least this way, he can continue his pursuit of those who Breathe While Mexican, keep booking American citizens for imaginary crimes, and keep booking himself on Larry King Live. Why give all that up for a bigger residence and mandatory luncheons?

What a guy.

Liveblog: 2010 Strategy Session with David Plouffe

By GottaLaff

There is an online televised strategy session with David Plouffe on line right now. I signed up for it via Organizing for America yesterday so I could share it with you:

Plouffe is telling us how we've re-engaged Americans, had great ideas, and that they're focusing on first-time voters, who usually turn out in lower numbers.

We need to tell them to keep being a part of our democracy.

OFA guy Mitch Stewart is lauding us for the over a million calls we made to Congress re: Health care reform. We've given over 10 million hours, he says.

He's saying how we told them we wanted to focus on first-time voters. So, they held strategy sessions across the country. He wants us to be the drivers of this push.

Plouffe: Talk to neighbors, set them straight, give accurate info, educate people. Financial reform, energy, immigration are all issues to communicate. Not just a DC parlor game.

Also, elections are coming up. The "repeal health care" is yet another issue to deal with. We need the promise of hcr to be realized. It's about now, and the decades to come. Leadership not focused on not just the next poll, but the next generation. We have to elect people who share that ideal.

Big stakes.

We must convince first time voters of the importance of elections, voting.

He says volunteer organization is even stronger now than it was in '08.

There are 15 million first time voters, most young, but not all. They need to know HOW to vote (by mail, in person, etc.). People are motivated by Obama, but they need person to person even more. Talk to people. Human to human. Door to door, phone calls, social networking sites, voter registration (secret weapon, he says).

In Texas, 2 million unregistered African American and Latino voters. So if we get half to register, that's huge.

One reason Obama ran was to engage people in our democracy. That was central.

Door to door: There is no substitute for talking with another human.

Other plans: Get pledges to vote, improved website, online tools, neighborhood volunteers.

Obama beat McCain 71-27 with first time voters, which is how he won many states.

We need to keep people involved, in the process, so they vote a second, third, fourth time, not just 2008.

Mitch: Over 763,000 first time voters in Ohio. Phone calls, door knocking increases participation by 8%, which is 60K additional votes. There are a number of statewide races that we can make the difference between winning and losing. He's rattling off numbers of state to state voters, how we can make a difference.
We have once in a generation opportunity to alter political landscape via first time voters.

What can you do:

--Host/attend house party strategy sessions. Local meetings are important.

--June 5, national day of action. Phone calls, door knocking, etc.

--Start making calls now. Go to 2010.BarackObama.com for info.

To be as great as we can be, we have to lead on education, energy, health care, foreign policy. Obama believes in us more than he did even before election '08. We have to fight and organize.

Keeping people involved in the process-- health care was a big deal that way-- is for the good of the country.

Online questions:
Q: How do you reach first time voters who haven't responded to OFA so far?
A: OFA website has info. But many don't receive news via network news, etc. So social networking is incredibly important. Then go face to face, as mentioned before.

Q: Better tools now?
A: Yes. More user friendly.

Q: Chance of holding 59 in Senate?
A: Plouffe: I don't try to anticipate. But we knew coming out of 2008, because we won so many seats in 06 and 08, history teaches you it's hard to retain all that. First time voters need to understand that this can happen. If you want folks in charge who put corps. and big biz, oil first, no leadership or vision w/ how to make country stronger... that's the argument, the choice people have. There are benefits in hcr now that it's come to pass. People are seeing that now. Economy is improving slowly, too. Evaluating Obama/Dem role will work for us. We can do better because the atmosphere will improve a little bit. We have a good/frightening story to tell about the alternative to Dems... Resources: Ads, internet, mailing, phones, but no sub for us talking to people. Get involved in local campaigns, too. Your leadership, voice in local campaigns makes a difference.

Q: How to motivate Dem voters to work for Dems who didn't vote for hcr?
A: Plouffe: We've had some big initiatives, hcr/energy/financial, etc. Some didn't support hcr, but we have a big, diverse majority. Some couldn't get there for hcr, but might for energy, recovery. So some disappoint on some issues. But they've been there on other issues. So we have to focus on Repubs. Politics is ultimately contest/competition. An election needs to be about a choice, w/o being nasty or overly negative. Talk one on one, candidates must run good campaigns, we'll get there.

Q: What will motivate new voters?
A: Mitch: The act of asking is more powerful than anything. First time voters may feel ignored, so engaging them in convo is powerful. We made in impact before because we got out there. Wall St. reform is one thing we're talking about. Big Bank interests vs. Main St. interests... that gets the reaction you want. Who wants to side w/ Big Banks? A lot of Repubs are not being covered w/ same scrutiny that we are. Now they will be. We'd win on the issues, so communicating choices to first time voters is essential.

Plouffe: They don't often consume political news. YOU can have a convo with them about the progress Obama has made v. Republicans. They were cynical, felt their vote didn't matter, but we showed them it did. Plus, show them they can vote early, how they can vote, assist them online, make it easy for them, plus you back it up on phones, at doors, emails. 2% is a lot. That can win an election.

Q: Motivate Latinos, how? A: Mitch: Immigration reform is one thing. The economy, jobs important too. So talk about those issues to all demographics, a big motivator. Let them understand what is at stake.

Plouffe: Obama got 67% of Latino voters, including Florida! 95%+ African American voters, voted at same level as white voters. So Obama won. We need a strong message, plus accomplishments, visions. We have to make sure they understand the stakes, arguments, accomplishments, start from a strong foundation. It's the economy, health care, energy... make the case that your family, small business is better off with Dems following Obama's lead. Can't coast on idea that they were Obama supporters.

Mitch: Peer to peer: Young talking to young, vets talking to vets, etc. The message being delivered by someone w/ shared experience, a neighbor, a friend, is much more powerful. The messenger matters.

Our success depends on the responsibility we all share to make this happen, do all we can until November. The stakes cannot be higher.

Sign up for house party.

Poll-itics: Crist Grabs Lead in Early Poll

By GottaLaff

The Tea Tantrumers will start their whining in 5...4..3...2...
:

A new McLaughlin & Associates poll in Florida shows Gov. Charlie Crist (I) leading the U.S. Senate race with 33%, followed by Marco Rubio (R) at 29% and Rep. Kendrick Meek (D) at 15%.

Interestingly, the poll shows Crist taking more votes from Meek than Rubio. Crist actually does better with Democrats than Meek, with 41% of them saying they would vote for him compared to 31% for Meek.

AUDIO: Could Charlie Crist be reminding us he's... pious?

By GottaLaff

Charlie Crist sure rammed his holiness down our throats during his "I am now running for Senate as a Not Really Independent, but okay, yeah, I'm an Independent" announcement. He used the God name in vain nine times.

A friend of mine generously edited this audio for me to share with you. Exhibit A:

Thank God that speech is over.

Sue Lowden finally chickens out: “Bartering Is Not A Policy”

By GottaLaff

Chicken Sue finally chickened out. Join me in the Chicken Dance to celebrate the end of her extended, and hilariously pathetic, clinging to the few feathers that remained of her health care barter system.

Via Greg Sargent:

[T]he candidate has now taken to her blog to clarify once and for all that she is not advocating for a chickens-for-checkups health plan:

I can understand why Harry Reid and his Washington allies and Hollywood friends are creating political theater rather than solving real problems. Bargaining, bartering and negotiating for health coverage is not a policy — it is a fact. It is occurring today and has been since the founding of our nation. If you want to see my policy on health care reform, it has been on my web page since last year -– and it remains there to this day. Nowhere in my health reform proposal do I discuss bargaining, bartering or negotiating, rather I offer real solutions that work without creating a new, government-run entitlement program that Nevadans don’t want and they cannot afford.

And people say Joe Biden has gaffe-itis.

Billionaire Jumps Into Florida Senate Race

Florida is turning into the race to watch. Via Taegan-

"Just in case Florida's Senate race wasn't interesting enough, Palm Beach billionaire Jeff Greene plans to file papers this morning to enter the contest as a Democrat," the Palm Beach Post reports.

Adam Smith: "His colorful profile -- Mike Tyson was best man at his 2008 wedding, ex-Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss lived in his guest house after prison, and he made many of his millions betting on the housing collapse that killed Florida's economy -- normally would make a candidate like Greene a long shot. But in a race where Democratic frontrunner Kendrick Meek is little known to most voters and Crist non-partisan candidacy means it will be a three-way race, Greene's ability to saturate Florida TV with commercials could make him a major contender."

In 2008, Forbes ran a profile of Greene titled, "The Reluctant Billionaire."

Quickie: Woman Who Beat Sarah Palin Enters Politics

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

The woman who beat Sarah Palin for the beauty queen title of Miss Alaska in 1984 is running for the Georgia state legislature, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Blackburn’s entrance is a happy development for Democrats. The 34th District has some rapidly shifting demographics.

Maryline Blackburn voted for Obama in 2008... and didn't quit in the middle of her Miss Alaska reign. That's two reasons to vote for her in 2010.

That was today's Quickie. Was it good for you?

Arizona Immigration Law: A GOP Game to Swipe the November Election

By GottaLaff

In my previous post, I made the point that the recent outbursts of racism were all about voter intimidation.

Greg Palast agrees, but he says it way better than I did:

What moved GOP Governor Jan Brewer to sign the Soviet-style show-me-your-papers law is the exploding number of legal Hispanics, US citizens all, who are daring to vote -- and daring to vote Democratic by more than two-to-one. Unless this demographic locomotive is halted, Arizona Republicans know their party will soon be electoral toast. Or, if you like, tortillas.

This is not unlike the Republican attitude toward unions.

Hey Greg Palast, tell us something we do not know about Jan Brewer:

Brewer, then Secretary of State, had organized a racially loaded purge of the voter rolls that would have made Katherine Harris blush. Beginning after the 2004 election, under Brewer's command, no less than 100,000 voters, overwhelming Hispanics, were blocked from registering to vote. In 2005, the first year of the Great Brown-Out, one in three Phoenix residents found their registration applications rejected. [...]

Did she turn over even one name to the feds for prosecution?

No, not one.

After over 100 complaints, and a 2 year investigation, the prosecutor, David Iglesias, couldn't find one voter fraud case. Of course, Karl Rove saw to it that he was fired.

But what’s wrong with requiring folks to prove they’re American if the want to vote and live in America? The answer: because the vast majority of perfectly legal voters and residents who lack ID sufficient for Ms. Brewer and Mr. Pearce are citizens of color, citizens of poverty.

According to a study by prof. Matt Barreto, of Washington State University, minority citizens are half as likely as whites to have the government ID. The numbers are dreadfully worse when income is factored in.

Leave it to Palast.

Please go read his entire piece here.
