Chickens for Check-Ups: The Website!

Last night I had a little fun with Sue Lowden's new and improved health care plan: Bring a chicken to the doctor in return for medical care.

For example, I bring a hen, or a copy of Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, and I get a proctological exam. Why didn't Congress think of that? It's right up their... alley.

So simple. So. Very. Simple.

Like the person who thought of it:

"Before we all started having health care, in the olden days, our grandparents, they would bring a chicken to the doctor," Lowden told a local news station. "They would say I'll paint your house." [...]

Lowden's campaign sent a letter to the Las Vegas Review-Journal Wednesday defending her stance and providing a testimonial of "Robin L. Titus, M.D." who claims that he has "bartered with patients -- for alfalfa hay, a bath tub, yard work and horse shoeing in exchange for my care." Her campaign has also been circulating an extensive background document explaining the perks of bargaining with your health care provider.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee didn't waste much time developing a Very Special Website touting Chicken Sue's idea. Let the mockitude begin (click on image to enlarge):

I wrote in telling her I'm looking for a doctor for "ill humours" (no "sick humor" option), offering my best ranch hand in exchange for medical services rendered. And what a ranch hand he is! He's worth at least three physicals.

Hey kids, what time is it? Why, it's Tea Bagger Family Values Time!

They say it is not racist, and is the same kind of caricature that was drawn of President George W. Bush, when he was sometimes drawn with big ears, a goofy face, and drawn as a devil.

We addressed one of the event’s organizers about this. Debbie Landis says the button is offensive. She says people were not supposed to be selling items at the event today, and had she known, she would have put a stop to it.

See? No harm done, it's exactly like the Bush caricatures of a white man with no discernible I.Q. whatsoever! Okay, the I.Q. part just slipped out. Old habits die hard.

Had she known, said the event organizer as she failed to take action, she would have put a stop to it. But she should have known. And she didn't put a stop to it.

What an ass.

Harry Reid: 'If the election were held today, I'd win'

Harry's math skills may be in question. Let's hope his instincts aren't:

Reid, the top Senate Democrat, who's facing arguably the toughest reelection fight of his career, expressed confidence that he would pull out a victory this fall.

“If the election were held today, I'd win,” the senator told the Nevada Appeal in an interview.

Given the fact that Harry is behind in the polls, that's some rosy outlook.

However, with all the infighting, various factions within the Republican party, the Tea Tantrumer candidates splitting voters, and bad press, who knows?

“Do the math,” Reid told the Nevada Appeal, pointing to the number of candidates in the race who could splinter the vote.

If extra points were given out for optimism, he'd pull it off.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid poked fun at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who campaigned against Reid in his hometown.

Okay, the jokes are old, but so his Harry, and hey, we need him to win this. Kudos to the guy for having some fun at Smeary McIncite's expense.

Nevada Tea Party candidate faces up to 14 years in prison

Before we get too gloaty, this was the same guy who could have helped Harry Reid win the election:

Scott Ashjian, the Tea Party candidate for U.S. Senate in Nevada, has been accused of writing bad checks for his asphalt business and faces up to 14 years in prison, KTNV-TV reports.

A judge is expected to sign an arrest warrant tomorrow.

Ashjian's entry into the race was seen as big break for Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) as polls showed him pulling votes from Republican challengers.

Money quote:

"To 10%, 8%, even less than that, it is possible a third party candidate who syphons off a small percentage of votes could throw the election to Harry Reid. That's the reason this is such a big story," says [Action News political analyst, Elizabeth Crum].

Oh, but I kid.

But Reid does need all the help he can get.

There were like, a million attendees at the Searchlight, Nevada Tea Tantrum! Nonono, two million! Scratch that, eleventeen kazillion times infinity!

Every time they hold an event, the right-wing media just make stuff up. Every. Time. It's almost like they're desperately trying to make the movement into something it's not.

Politico's Kenneth Vogel had a little higher number, saying "an estimated 20,000 tea partiers gathered for a rally in a windswept desert lot," in his March 27 report on the event.

But guess what...

Politico didn't confirm the crowd size, it simply passed along the estimate provided by organizers.

The Las Vega Sun had a thing or two to say about that:

About 8,000 people were at the event as of 2 p.m., according to an estimate from Metro Police spokesman Jay Rivera. Traffic at one time was backed up about five miles from Searchlight.

Remember the references to this being the "conservative Woodstock"?

Woodstock's approximate attendance: 500,000.

Grand Jury Issues Subpoenas in Ensign Probe

Looks like that other shoe showed up.

Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) "is in the crosshairs of a Department of Justice criminal investigation," KLAS-TV reports.

"The criminal probe stems from a romantic affair Ensign had with the wife of his key staffer and close friend, Doug Hampton, and what Ensign has done to help Hampton financially."

"Subpoenas have been issued to at least six Las Vegas businesses. The Justice Department came to Las Vegas to interview several prominent business and political figures in what appears to be a wide-ranging and deadly-serious criminal probe."

Tea Party Candidate Would Help Reid

A new Mason-Dixon poll in Nevada shows Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) leads his re-election race with 36% when matched against a generic Republican who would get 32% and a Tea Party candidate who would get 18%.

However, in head-to-head match ups with named Republicans, Reid continues to trail by significant margins.

I'm not a big Harry Reid fan, but at least he's on our team.

Poll: Passing public option would lift Harry Reid’s re-election chances

Ten bucks says that he'll still be as wishy washy as ever.

Washington — One-third of voters in Nevada say they would be more likely to vote for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid this fall if he wins passage of the public option in the health care bill, according to a poll released today.

Reid continues to trail his potential Republican opponents by double-digit margins, according to the Research 2000 poll. But Reid could peel off 20 percent of support from Republicans Danny Tarkanian or Sue Lowden if he won passage of the public option.

“It looks like there is a path to salvation for him if he not only fights for, but wins, the public option,” said Adam Green of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which commissioned the poll with Credo Action and Democracy for America.

A new poll in Nevada by GOP pollster Glen Bolger shows Tea Party hopeful Jon Ashjian helping Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) in the U.S. Senate race but not yet putting him ahead of either Sue Lowden (R) or Danny Tarkanian (R).

Lowden leads Reid, 42% to 37%, with Ashjian at 9%.

Tarkanian leads Reid, 40% to 39%, with Ashjian at 11%.

The Hill finds a "rather bizarre" video clip of Nevada Senate candidate Danny Tarkanian (R) "stumbling over his words as he apparently tries to talk about Reagan's '11th Commandment' -- thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican."

Tarkanian refers to the famous slogan as the "11th Amendment" and repeatedly attributes it to Reid, not Reagan.

Confusing Saint Ronnie with Harry Reid won't get you too far with the Rushpub Reagan worshipers.

Maybe Tarkanian just gets stage fright. Or has a really bad memory.

Or shouldn't be running for office.

Men's Lib! Brothel to hire 1st male prostitutes

The owner of a brothel more than two hours' drive from Las Vegas said she hopes to hire Nevada's first legal male prostitutes within a month, now that state health officials have approved a method to test men for infectious diseases.

The world is ready for women, or even other men, to legally buy sex, said Shady Lady Ranch owner Bobbi Davis. Plus, being the first to offer male service could boost business in tough economic times, she said.

Well it's about time. And hey, if it's good for the economy, who are we to argue?

She said the women usually charge about $300 per hour for the five to 20 customers who visit on any given night.

"We don't know how to structure the men's pricing yet," Davis said.

Nevada Senator Ensign (R) admits to extramarital affair

Good**, I always thought he had a real chance at '12 and this will put the kibosh on it. More as I get it (it was just announced on MSNBC) Added- Cilizza has it-

Sources in Washington and Nevada say Republican Sen. John Ensign, a rising star in the Republican Party considering a 2012 presidential bid will hold a press conference later today in which he will acknowledge an extramarital affair.

Ensign, a member of the Senate GOP leadership, flew back to his native Las Vegas today in anticipation of the public announcement, sources said, missing a vote considered key to the Nevada tourist industry.

Two senior GOP political strategists, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter, said the announcement was imminent. They declined to say with whom Ensign had the affair.

**Let me clarify for my own peace of mind, not good as in he had an affair (I wouldn't wish that drama on anyone's family) but good that he'll be too tarnished to run in '12.
