Rove, Gillespie Plot to Reclaim Power

I'd think that this would scare me a bit, but it really doesn't. Remember how Rove insisted he "had THE math"? Well, it feels like this is of a similar vein. Ben's got the list of groups involved, story via Taegan-
"The Republican Party's best-connected political operatives have quietly built a massive fundraising, organizing and advertising machine based on the model assembled by Democrats early in the decade, and with the same ambitious goal -- to recapture Congress and the White House," Politico reports.
"The new groups could give Republicans and their allies a powerful campaign apparatus separate from the Republican National Committee. Karl Rove, political architect of the Bush presidency, and Ed Gillespie, former Republican Party chairman, are the most prominent forces behind what is, in effect, a network of five overlapping groups, three of which were started in the past few months."
Said Gillespie: "Where they have a chess piece on the board, we need a chess piece on the board. Where they have a queen, we shouldn't have three pawns."

Arizona Immigration Law: A GOP Game to Swipe the November Election
By GottaLaff
In my previous post, I made the point that the recent outbursts of racism were all about voter intimidation.
Greg Palast agrees, but he says it way better than I did:
What moved GOP Governor Jan Brewer to sign the Soviet-style show-me-your-papers law is the exploding number of legal Hispanics, US citizens all, who are daring to vote -- and daring to vote Democratic by more than two-to-one. Unless this demographic locomotive is halted, Arizona Republicans know their party will soon be electoral toast. Or, if you like, tortillas.
This is not unlike the Republican attitude toward unions.
Hey Greg Palast, tell us something we do not know about Jan Brewer:
Brewer, then Secretary of State, had organized a racially loaded purge of the voter rolls that would have made Katherine Harris blush. Beginning after the 2004 election, under Brewer's command, no less than 100,000 voters, overwhelming Hispanics, were blocked from registering to vote. In 2005, the first year of the Great Brown-Out, one in three Phoenix residents found their registration applications rejected. [...]
Did she turn over even one name to the feds for prosecution? No, not one.
After over 100 complaints, and a 2 year investigation, the prosecutor, David Iglesias, couldn't find one voter fraud case. Of course, Karl Rove saw to it that he was fired.
But what’s wrong with requiring folks to prove they’re American if the want to vote and live in America? The answer: because the vast majority of perfectly legal voters and residents who lack ID sufficient for Ms. Brewer and Mr. Pearce are citizens of color, citizens of poverty.
According to a study by prof. Matt Barreto, of Washington State University, minority citizens are half as likely as whites to have the government ID. The numbers are dreadfully worse when income is factored in.
Leave it to Palast.
Please go read his entire piece here.

"The old Bush team will be controlling the finances of the party"
By GottaLaff
Karl Rove and some of his BushCo buddies are behind a new Republican political action committee called "American Crossroads". Why, it's like a reunion! Maybe they'll all wear name tags with old photos of themselves on them, and comment on how their old chums are bald now.
Class of 2001! Rah!
But that's not important now. What is important is that the RNC is getting a little jittery about it. Why? Because re$ources are getting siphoned off from them and into Rove's pot. And by pot I mean big fat hammy arms, not the kind one might smoke (although that might alleviate some of the stress).
This isn't how Michael Steele wants to roll:
If Rove and his team do raise the cash they are boasting about, the RNC will run out of money and the old Bush team will be controlling the finances of the party, the official griped. That may leave top donors looking to American Crossroads and others instead of to the national party in future cycles.
"This is drawing [donors] away from the party and into something else, and its very formation is communicating to the donors nationally that there is no confidence in the Republican party," the former official said. He suggested this would allow the RNC's donor base to atrophy and put the next chairman in a position of needing to completely rebuild.
Oh goody. The nasty, thuggy, Bushie frat boys are back. Now I remember why I avoid reunions.

My segment starts at about the 30 minute mark.

A Very Special BLUNT: Karl Rove's Big Book Signing
By GottaLaff
Blunt is a lot like letters to the editor. YOUR take, short, to the point.
You have a voice, now use it.
This particular Blunt features just one contributor, one of my favorite people on Twitter. He submitted a number of videos which I threaded together, because they shared a theme:
A Karl Rove book signing:

VIDEO: Plouffe v. Rove on "This Week"
By GottaLaff
It's only part of the exchange. I'm working on getting the whole thing.
Here you go, via Kos:
Thank you ABC News

For giving Ex President Karl Rove a platform to fillibuster for his proven quality opinions. Video when I get it.
PLEASE NOTE: Title has been changed to correct an error.
Note from Paddy- I incorrectly credited Jake Tapper for hosting the show today (and letting Karl run roughshod over everything), we think it was John Karl. My mistake, I listen in another room from where the computer er television is. What a day.

Quote of the Day
"I think this is part of a broader problem with the Obama administration. ... We saw it in Honduras. Where rather than monitoring the situation, they let a cowboy president try to act in an extra-constitutional way to violate a fundamental principle in the Constitution, all without having done their homework in advance,"I started out bolding the truly heinous parts, but the whole thing is just beyond the pale. VIDEOS: Jon Stewart shoots holes through Karl Rove's "Meet the Press" lies
By GottaLaff
Meet the Press, this morning:
Addressing a Congressional panel, former Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz claimed that Iraqi oil revenues would help pay for reconstruction of the country. Sunday, Karl Rove denied the Bush administration ever made that claim.
"[T]he suggestion that somehow or another the administration had as its policy, 'We're going to go in to Iraq and take their resources and pay for the war' is not accurate," Rove told NBC's Tom Brokaw.

Frank Rich: The New Rove-Cheney Assault on Reality
By GottaLaff
Dana Perino, the former White House press secretary, declared that “we did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush’s term.” Rudy Giuliani upped the ante on ABC’s “Good Morning America” in January. “We had no domestic attacks under Bush,” he said. “We’ve had one under Obama.” (He apparently meant the Fort Hood shootings.)
Now the revisionist floodgates have opened with the simultaneous arrival of Karl Rove’s memoir and Keep America Safe, a new right-wing noise machine invented by Dick Cheney’s daughter Liz and the inevitable William Kristol. This gang’s rewriting of history knows few bounds. [...]
[S]omeone will have to remind our amnesia-prone nation who really enabled America’s enemies in the run-up to 9/11 and in its aftermath. [...]
Rove and his book are yesterday. Keep America Safe is on the march. Liz Cheney’s crackpot hit squad achieved instant notoriety with its viral video demanding the names of Obama Justice Department officials who had served as pro bono defense lawyers for Guantánamo Bay detainees. [...] As if to underline the McCarthyism implicit in this smear campaign, the Cheney ally Marc Thiessen (one of the two former Bush speechwriters now serving as Washington Post columnists) started spreading these charges on television with a giggly, repressed hysteria uncannily reminiscent of the snide Joe McCarthy henchman Roy Cohn. [...]
When even the relentless pursuer of Monicagate is moved to call a right-wing jihad “out of bounds,” as Starr did in this case, that’s a fairly good indicator that it’s way off in crazyland. [...]
In this spectrum, the Keep America Safe crowd is a fringe. But it still must be challenged. As we’ve learned the hard way, little fictions, whether about “death panels” or “uranium from Africa,” can grow mighty fast in the 24/7 media echo chamber. [...]
What could yet give some traction to the Keep America Safe revisionism is the backdrop against which it is unfolding: an Iraq election with an uncertain and possibly tumultuous outcome; the escalation of the war in Afghanistan; and an increasingly cavalier Iran. If any of these national security theaters goes south, those in the Rove-Cheney cohort will claim vindication in their campaign to pin their own failings on their successors.
Obama may well make — or is already making — his own mistakes. And he will bear responsibility for them. But they must be seen in the context of the larger narrative that the revisionists are now working so hard to obscure. The most devastating terrorist attack on American soil did happen during Bush’s term [...] The ensuing Iraq war allowed those who did attack us on 9/11 to regroup in Afghanistan and beyond — and emboldened Iran, an adversary with an actual nuclear program. [...]
If we are really to keep America safe, it’s essential we remember exactly which American politicians empowered Iran, Al Qaeda and the Taliban from 2001 to 2008, and why. History will be repeated not only if we forget it, but also if we let it be rewritten by those whose ideological zealotry and boneheaded decisions have made America less safe to this day.
Much more here.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
Dee-lish! David Corn offered to bet former Bush spokesman Brad Blakeman $1000 that he and Rove were lying about the WMD inspectors being denied access to inspection sites. Right there on the Tee Vee Machine.
March 20, 2003:
Bush urged journalists to leave the country in his television address late Monday. "For their own safety, all foreign nationals — including journalists and inspectors — should leave Iraq immediately," the president said.
Bush ordered the inspectors out. Blakeman owes David Corn $1000.

VIDEO- Karl Rove: I don't think my father was gay
By GottaLaff
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
"I don't know whether my father, at the end of his life, was gay or not."
As I try to figure out how to respond to this, because I'm tongue-tied, I'm sitting here shaking my head... literally.
One doesn't suddenly become gay at the end of one's life, Karl. One may finally admit it, or come to terms with it, or recognize it, or even experiment... but one does not find oneself magically and abruptly transformed into Teh Gay at the end of one's life.
Maybe that's not what he meant, but that's how it struck me.
"I'm not comfortable writing about me... It was a chance to set the record straight..."
But enough about me, what do you think of me? No, no please... well... okay, I'll just talk about me, and yes, even write about me if you insist... as long it pushes my slimy propaganda, serves my own purposes, makes me a bundle of money, and covers my legal ass.

Karl Rove: Cheney 'squirmed' when offered VP spot
By GottaLaff

Of the heartless, by the heartless:
The parts of the 516-page book that cover the selection of Cheney as Bush's running mate suggest that the longtime Republican insider was not comfortable when offered the position.
Neither were we.
"Bush surprised Cheney by asking him to think about becoming his running mate. Cheney said he'd consider it but wasn't certain it was a good idea for Bush or for him."
Oh yes, I'm sure that's just how it went down:
Bush: Whaddya say you run for president, DickHead?
Dickless: You mean vice president, don't you?
Bush: Hehheh, nope. But that'll be my new nickname for ya. Vice President DickHead. But we'll keep that to ourselves. We're like that, me and you. Sym-pat-ic-o. Kinda like conspirators, heheheh. Accessories under the fact.
"Some people have suggested that Cheney engineered his own selection. This is far-fetched. I saw the man squirm as Bush pressed him to accept," Rove writes.
Bush: Whoa, DickHead, yer gittin' all squirmy on me. What's up, a-mi-go?
Dickless: "Vice" president. Too many things wrong with that. F*** "vice".
Bush: Hold up there, chief. You'll be holdin' the reins. Yer the head honcho. Oo! Oo! I know what'll convince ya!
Dickless: For chrissake, George, STFU.
Bush: Nonono, yer gonna like this. Lissen up: I'll bomb Iraq. Ya got my word. To smithereens. And then we'll move on to Iran. Man, this is gonna be a blast! Hey, didja see what I did there? The little play on words? Blast? Bombs? Heheheheheheheh!
Dickless: Deal. ... And never, ever, call me amigo again... for your own good. Just thinking of you, junior. Need you to stay in one piece if I'm gonna be surreptitiously running the damn country.
Bush: What's shrubterishously mean?
Dickless: STFU.
"Cheney had a clear understanding of what John Nance Garner, FDR's first vice president, had said about the office - that it was 'not worth a bucket of warm piss.' Cheney was too much of a patriot to act on that knowledge."
Yeah, Cheney's too much of a patriot to avoid the "warm piss" reference. But not too much of a patriot to avoid telling Pat Leahy to f*** himself. What a stand up guy.

"Me and Yoo don't want to go to jail"
By GottaLaff
Larisa Alexandrovna popped linked me to an article just now that showed up in a tweet from ::shudder:: Karl Rove.
Here's part of what it says:
“We need to develop a greater resiliency in this country on security issues,” Sarah E. Mendelson of the Center for Strategic and International Studies told the New York Times. “The administration needs to remind the American public that we have convicted 195 international terrorists in federal courts since 2001.”Here's what Larisa says:
That 195 number is making the rounds. It is both false and an exercise in hypocrisy.
The figure is mined from “In Pursuit of Justice,” a report published by Human Rights First (HRF) in May 2008 and updated last July (available here). But the report does not claim that 195 international terrorists have been convicted. Rather, it says that 195 defendants have been convicted so far in 119 cases that have some connection, however attenuated, to terrorism. [...]
That’s right: When the Bush administration used the immigration laws to boot terror suspects out of the country, the Left and its fellow travelers like CAIR claimed this was racial profiling masquerading as counterterrorism. Now, in the age of Obama, we learn from HRF that “immigration fraud” counts as a “terrorism case” — so the group can boost the numbers and claim that the same Justice Department (under the Bush administration for most of the period covered in the report) has done a great job of combating terrorism in civilian court.

What do you say?
Here's what I say: Karl Rove is a

Axelrod blasts Rove
By GottaLaff
David Axelrod blasted Karl Rove, who bellowed that Democrats in Congress "will run up more debt by October than Bush did in eight years."
Them's fightin' words:
"During eight years in office, the Bush administration passed two major tax cuts skewed to the wealthiest Americans, enacted a costly Medicare prescription-drug benefit and waged two wars, without paying for any of it.... To put the breathtaking scope of this irresponsibility in perspective, the Bush administration's swing from surpluses to deficits added more debt in its eight years than all the previous administrations in the history of our republic combined. And its spending spree is the unwelcome gift that keeps on giving: Going forward, these unpaid-for policies will continue to add trillions to our deficit."Short version: Hey KKKarl, you guys f'ed up in an unprecedented way, you're a colossal liar, so shut your pig snouty pie hole.
"There's an old saying that everyone is entitled to his own opinions, but not his own facts. The next time Karl Rove would like to offer us some advice, I'd urge him to take that to heart."
