Coast Guard: BP caps 1 of 3 leaks at Gulf well
NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard says BP PLC has managed to cap one of three leaks at a deepwater oil well, but the work is not expected to reduce the overall flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley says the work Tuesday night should reduce the number of leak points that need to be fixed on the ocean floor. BP officials have said that fewer leaks will make it easier to drop a containment box on the breach.

First oil containment box almost completed

Wow, everything I heard made it sound like it would be at least a month or so before this would be ready. Good work.
PORT FOURCHON, La. — The company BP PLC hired to build concrete and steel containment boxes says the first one will be completed within 48 hours.
Spokesman John Curry said Monday that BP hopes to have the 98-ton box in the water by week's end to cover the main leak at the well site. A second backup box, also topped with a metal dome, is under construction.
(snip)
Jason Holvey, a marine engineer working for Wild Well Control, says smaller, similar containment devices have been used in the Gulf, but in shallow waters. He says they were used after Hurricane Katrina to channel oil to the surface that had spilled from platforms.
PhotOh! The meme of memes: Big Oil's Katrina
By GottaLaff
Tazzz over at DailyKos has graciously given me permission to cross-post her work here at TPC.
We're done with the media pushing Rushpublic memes. Time to start one of our own:

Big Oil owns this one. Between this and the mining disasters, it's time to shift the blame on those who deserve it.
Note to GOP: You just go right on backing these thugs. Then your new slogan can be Lose, Baby, Lose.

VIDEO: Waffle, Baby, Waffle a la Rubio
By GottaLaff
First:
Please note that posting could be light today. Paddy is gone for a few hours, I'm on no sleep and have a huge video project ahead of me that got a bigger response than I ever expected, and that's a good thing. Between editing and Paddy's absence, things will be a little slower today.
With that, join me in watching Marco Rubio partake in the new GOP dance craze that I call the McCain Flip Flop:
The oil rig disaster has caused problems for the Republican candidate Marco Rubio, a drilling proponent. In 2008, Rubio told Newt Gingrich’s big oil front group American Solutions for Winning the Future that he was proud to join the “drill here, drill now, pay less effort.” (Rubio also promoted drilling In a spanish-language endorsement.)
Now, Rubio is waffling on drilling.
If this disaster makes proponents of drilling think twice, then there is a silver lining. The cost was way too steep, but playing the Glad Game can at least help us cope.

Indiana company may have resource to help clean gulf oil spill

Anyone know Napolitano's phone number?
MISHAWAKA — Oil continues to ooze from a massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico. President Obama has pledged to use every resource to stop the leak and clean up the mess. One of those resources could come from this area.
Bioremediation Incorporated is a local company that uses natural bacteria to clean up harmful chemicals. The company has invented a microbe that consumes crude oil...and company officials say they are eager to help out in the Gulf.
Steve Kennedy is president of Bioremediation Incorporated which helps companies eliminate toxic waste. The company holds a super-secret bacteria formula that can consume crude oil.
“Us as humans, we consume steak and pizzas. Our microbes consume hydrocarbons, and crude oil is a hydrocarbon,” Kennedy says.
The oil is highly flammable and toxic before the application. Pour on the bacteria solution...and you can see immediate results. The bacteria is breaking down the toxic substances and turning it into carbon dioxide and water. Kennedy says, their product could easily be used in the gulf to get rid of the crude oil.
“Ours would be a simple way. It would be spraying it down and letting the microbes consume it off,” he says. “That is how it works.”

Video- White House Says No New Offshore Drilling Until Investigation is Complete
Bzzz, wrong answer. The answer should be all offshore drilling is stopped until they figure out what went wrong.
May I just ask...
Has anyone heard rumblings or statements from D.C. or anywhere as to inspectors being sent out to check all the other offshore drilling rigs in use as we speak? Seems it might be a good idea to check for vulnerabilities like whatever happened to the one that just blew up.
Anyone working on a bill to tighten regulations on the rigs, to at least include a second shut off valve? (I heard last night, don't remember where, that Brazil has a tough set of regulations that the U.S. should be looking to emulate.)
Seems to me that these would be the right things to do and make the D's look good.

VIDEO- Ex-Bushie: Offshore Oil Drilling Will Be Unlikely To Win Over Any GOP Votes
By GottaLaff
Dan Bartlett, that good ol' BushCo spokesperson, confirms that The Party of No will continue to say no, regardless of any effort the Obama administration will make to try that thing called "bipartisanship" again:
One possible reason for the administration’s policy shift may be that it is seeking Republican votes for comprehensive energy reform.
There will be no drilling on the west coast, but there will be drilling elsewhere, as well as investment in nuclear energy, "clean" coal, and more. That's what he calls "compromise":
“If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage — I don’t want to be so rigid that we can’t get something done.”
But the No Party immediately said that Obama didn't go far enough.
Exhibit A, OilyTweet McDrillHappy:
Sarah Palin responds with a pair of tweets. In the first, she writes, "Drill, baby, drill." In the second, she praises Boehner's response and admonishes Obama for trying to win over conservative votes for an energy overhaul:

Think Progress has much more.
As I see it, this is health care reform redux. President Obama is playing chess, the GOP is playing, too, but with fire. With lives. With themselves, if you will.
Obama is doing his centrist thing to accomplish goals that nobody else could, in his position. We may not agree with some of his compromises, but it may be necessary to get where we need to go, just as health care reform was.
Thom Hartmann just now, slightly paraphrased: "He's knocking the knees out from under the GOP, taking the oomph out of their arguments, and will make Drill Baby Drill tee shirts obsolete. This is a martial art, taking the Republicans greatest strength and using it to flip them over his shoulder."
Chess v. checkers. Foresight v. blindness. Wisdom v. foolishness.
