BREAKING-- Oil Volcano "Triggered By Safety failures"

By GottaLaff

Via a Yahoo e-mail alert:

ON THE GULF OF MEXICO (AP) Documents: Oil rig's deadly blast triggered by methane gas bubble, series of safety failures.

Confirming what we already suspected. Hey BP, how does it feel to be responsible for Big Oil's Katrina?

More details when they come in.

Quote-O'-The-Day: Former FEMA Fool edition

By GottaLaff

Heckuva quote, Mary:

"He was a fool when he stepped off the plane in Louisiana 4½ years ago, and unfortunately for him, he apparently still is."

-- Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), quoted by Politico, on the attempted comeback of former FEMA Director Michael Brown.

Many of us are still trying to figure out why he was allowed back on the Tee Vee Machine in the first place.

Cartoon-O'-The-Moment: Oil Car Bomb

By GottaLaff

I saw this in my L.A. Times this morning. Well done, Ed Stein:

Video- Fox host challenges Rove's claims Obama didn't respond to oil disaster fast enough

Someone is messing with the flavors of kool aid over at Fox. I'm really wondering if there was a serious meeting over at Faux News Megabuilding, especially in the light of these two other incidents of truth the past few days, here and here. Wow, she actually got Rove to flail a bit. Video via Think Progress.

Poll- Not Obama's Katrina

Looks more like it's the oil industry's Katrina. Rasmussen even. Via Greg-

Video- O'Reilly on critiques of Obama response to oil spill: "What could he have done? ... This is insane"

Wow, Fox is being really schizophrenic lately. First the "All-Star Panel" and now O'Reilly?

Coast Guard: BP caps 1 of 3 leaks at Gulf well

It's a start.

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard says BP PLC has managed to cap one of three leaks at a deepwater oil well, but the work is not expected to reduce the overall flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley says the work Tuesday night should reduce the number of leak points that need to be fixed on the ocean floor. BP officials have said that fewer leaks will make it easier to drop a containment box on the breach.

First oil containment box almost completed

Wow, everything I heard made it sound like it would be at least a month or so before this would be ready. Good work.

PORT FOURCHON, La. — The company BP PLC hired to build concrete and steel containment boxes says the first one will be completed within 48 hours.

Spokesman John Curry said Monday that BP hopes to have the 98-ton box in the water by week's end to cover the main leak at the well site. A second backup box, also topped with a metal dome, is under construction.

(snip)

Jason Holvey, a marine engineer working for Wild Well Control, says smaller, similar containment devices have been used in the Gulf, but in shallow waters. He says they were used after Hurricane Katrina to channel oil to the surface that had spilled from platforms.

Black Katrina

By GottaLaff

I previously posted about BP's horrific Oil Volcano being "Big Oil's Katrina".

Editorial cartoonist extraordinaire, J.D. Crowe, has another name for it, and has graciously permitted me to post his work, "Black Katrina", which is powerful and beautifully executed:

A hurricane, as devastating as it is to humans and physical structures, is an act of natural cleansing. An earthy enema. An oil spill is poison. A man-made, toxic rape of Mother Nature.

Blaming President Obama for BP's (and maybe even Halliburton's) devastating blow to the ocean, wildlife, and the health and welfare of America, is also toxic, but not nearly as nightmarish as the current-- and future-- long term, filthy nightmare.

Apparently, Rush Limbaugh bathes in crude oil

By GottaLaff

It's as clear as a bell now. We should never bathe again. I'm sure Boss Limpdong doesn't. Yes, according to him, water's equivalent is a gooey oil gush. Water is toxic. It obviously isn't the oil volcano that's killing wildlife and ruining what's left of our economy:

"The ocean will take care of this on its own if it was left alone and left out there. It's natural. It's as natural as the ocean water is."

-- Rush Limbaugh, quoted by the St. Petersburg Times, arguing that a cleanup of the oil spill off the Lousiana coast is unnecessary.

Using his own logic, the sky will take care of all that smog, and his body will take care of all that fat.

PhotOh! The meme of memes: Big Oil's Katrina

By GottaLaff

Tazzz over at DailyKos has graciously given me permission to cross-post her work here at TPC.

We're done with the media pushing Rushpublic memes. Time to start one of our own:

BIG OIL'S KATRINA

Big Oil owns this one. Between this and the mining disasters, it's time to shift the blame on those who deserve it.

Note to GOP: You just go right on backing these thugs. Then your new slogan can be Lose, Baby, Lose.

Videos- President Obama visits Gulf Coast

Front page of Yahoo right now

TODAY - May 02, 2010

The arrows are added to get you right to the point. No, No, No, No, NO! Ugh.

Note to Punditiots: Gulf oil disaster is NOT "Obama's Katrina"

By GottaLaff

In an earlier post, I mentioned how some in the media (Gee, guess who?) are pushing the meme that the Gulf oil catastrophe is "Obama's Katrina". Wrong. It's a memorable catch phrase, but it's inaccurate, to say the least. But that won't stop them from perpetuating the lies. It never has, it never will.

While BP was the first responder, the Coast Guard reacted right away to the situation and deployed 70 vessels and 1 million feet of boom for possible service, Napolitano said.

Salazar noted that the Obama administration has ordered inspections of "blowout preventers" on other Gulf rigs. The government's job was to "keep the boot on the neck" of BP to ensure it meets its obligations in stopping the spill, dealing with the oil slick and paying for all costs and damages.

President Obama is on his way:

President Obama headed to Louisiana on Sunday to see for himself the growing oil slick from a damaged offshore well that threatens the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Compare that to this memory jogger, "A Tale of Two Photos":

As for the meme, maybe this will help, Via Greg Sargent:

Michael Shear counts the ways that the Gulf oil spill isn’t Katrina:

The gulf oil spill is no Katrina, in which 1,836 people died amid the near total devastation of one of America’s great cities

Unlike Katrina, there has been no obvious failures of government, no images to compare to the Superdome or the flooded streets of St. Bernard Parish. And unlike Katrina, there is an easy target for blame in the current oil spill: the oil giant BP, which by law is the “responsible party” and must pay for all of the costs of the cleanup.

However, if you are a Rushpublic, it's all Obama's fault. So is that paper cut I just got, according to them.... And that flat tire that caused gridlock on the 101 freeway, along with global warming, terrorism, locusts, Vanilla Ice's career, and Trump's hair.

VIDEO: Waffle, Baby, Waffle a la Rubio

By GottaLaff

First:

Please note that posting could be light today. Paddy is gone for a few hours, I'm on no sleep and have a huge video project ahead of me that got a bigger response than I ever expected, and that's a good thing. Between editing and Paddy's absence, things will be a little slower today.

With that, join me in watching Marco Rubio partake in the new GOP dance craze that I call the McCain Flip Flop:

The oil rig disaster has caused problems for the Republican candidate Marco Rubio, a drilling proponent. In 2008, Rubio told Newt Gingrich’s big oil front group American Solutions for Winning the Future that he was proud to join the “drill here, drill now, pay less effort.” (Rubio also promoted drilling In a spanish-language endorsement.)

Now, Rubio is waffling on drilling.

If this disaster makes proponents of drilling think twice, then there is a silver lining. The cost was way too steep, but playing the Glad Game can at least help us cope.
