FCC paves way for studios to push first-run movies into the home

By GottaLaff

With all the big flat screens and spiffy high def Blue Ray DVD players and other techie gizmos, how could this not happen? Not to mention the whole "let's make more money" thing.

Via an e-mail alert from the L.A. Times:

Federal regulators have granted a controversial waiver to the Hollywood studios that clears the way for people to watch movies in their home shortly after -- or even during -- their release in theaters.

The Federal Communications Commission today granted a petition from the Motion Picture Assn. of America, the chief lobbying group for the major studios, that would permit use of a so-called selectable output control technology for watching first-run movies in the home.

The technology prevents the illegal copying of movies, which has been a stumbling block to delivering first-run movies into the home and directly to consumers. [...]

The move has been opposed by both movie theater operators and consumer groups, the former who worry it would undercut ticket sales and the latter who say it would interfere with other devices that plug into the TV.

I rarely get to a movie theater. I am on Cloud 10.

'Avatar' -- torture for conservatives

By GottaLaff

http://media.eyeblast.org/newsbusters/static/2010/01/avatarposter.jpg

The L.A. Times had a splendid editorial today. However I have to take issue with one sentence: "People are smart enough to separate fictional morality tales from reality."

Either conservative (<--added) Rushpublics don't count as people, or they aren't smart enough to tell fact from fiction.

Oh wait. It's both:
Filmmaker James Cameron's science-fiction epic, which is on track to be the highest-grossing movie ever, has been widely derided as anti-American,liberal propaganda. That's funny, we thought it was just formulaic -- if incredibly artful -- escapist fantasy. [...]

Cameron hasn't been shy about admitting that he has an agenda. [...]

So we'll stipulate that "Avatar" promotes a liberal worldview. The question is, why does anyone care?

Directors have been inserting their political opinions into motion pictures for as long as there have been movies. [...]

Such movies make people think, but as far as we can tell, Luke Skywalker never persuaded anybody to register as a Democrat. In other words, people are smart enough to separate fictional morality tales from reality.

Conservatives offended by "Avatar" can stay home and watch something that conforms better to their political views -- say, "24" on the Fox network, which glorifies the torture of terrorist detainees. But why would they want to? Whether the bad guys wear black hats, turbans or Army helmets, the explosions are just as spectacular.
That's it for me. I think it's time to plotz.

VIDEO- Avatar: The Making of the Bootleg (parody)

By GottaLaff

I haven't seen Avatar, and I'm not all that interested in it after what Mr. Laffy told me (he saw the 3-D version). His opinion was that it visually, it was great, but otherwise "big, long, and overdone". But he also said that the buzz by the exiting (very young) crowd was mostly positive, so don't go by us jaded LALA Land show biz types:

Free Love Forum takes you behind the scenes of the revolutionary new bootleg of the revolutionary new movie.

Starring Jeremy Beiler, Paul Dorfman and Anne Johnson
Written & Directed by Gabe Gronli
Special Thanks to Aaron Cohen and Nick Vasile
