Quickie: Seems Mr. Anti-Gay Activist did indulge in sex acts with escort after all

By GottaLaff

The other day I posted about another typical hypocritical Rushpublic sexcapade. Now it turns out it was a lie-filled sexcapade. So what else is new, right?

Today's Quickie (pun intended):

The male escort who accompanied George Rekers, a leader of the ex-gay movement, on a European vacation now says the two did engage in sex acts.
It's about the hypocrisy, not the act. When will they ever get that straight (pun intended)?

That was today's Quickie. Was it good for you?

Quickie: Why Did CBS Scrub Story About Army Spy Planes Capturing the Times Square Bomber?

By GottaLaff

I've bumped this story up with an update. Title has been edited.

Original post:

How did they catch the New York bomb suspect? Today's Quickie:

Via Gawker:

They intercepted his call reserving a plane ticket to Dubai; authorities nabbed him. [WCBS]

We didn't hear a whole lot about that, did we? But we did get a critical earful about Miranda rights. But not a whole lot of kudos about how-- within what, 53.5 hours?-- they captured the bad guy.

That was today's Quickie. Was it good for you?

Gawker UPDATE:

Yesterday the above story was scrubbed. But why? Gawker had screen shots of related headlines. Today they report:
According to WCBS, they simply got caught up in the frenzy of breaking news and "inadvertently" put in an unconfirmed detail. There is a problem with this account: The detail about the Army Intelligence planes was featured prominently in the title of the originally article. Clearly, the line wasn't "inadvertently included"—it was put in and deliberately promoted. After all, it was the most eye-catching detail of the story.

Quickie: Twofer edition

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie is a twofer, and they both come by way of Greg Sargent:

* Today’s prize for bucking the Beltway-approved narrative goes to Jonathan Alter, for making an audacious suggestion: Rather than asking whether the Gulf spill is Obama’s Katrina, let’s ask whether it should give new momentum to energy reform.

* Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, a gung-ho backer of the Arizona immigration law, says he will decide whether to ride his tough-on-immigration notoriety to launch a run for higher office, commenting thusly:

“I am not running for governor now until I decide over the weekend with a glass of wine and my wife, since my mother and father came here from Italy, with a little spaghetti and meatballs.”

Well now, those are two hefty little Quickies. One relates back to this post, in which I complained about the Katrina meme that the pretend news insists upon pushing.

As for Arpaio, I posted about him here. He's hopeless and has no business being in the public eye or in public office, let alone anywhere else.

Quickie: Big Oil Requests Government Help edition

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

This just came via e-mail. See if you can spot the irony:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) BP official says company has asked for government help with oil in Gulf

If I recall, Big Oil pals around with FreedomWorks, who in turn pals around with Tea Baggers who in turn refuse to pal around with "Big Government".... unless they're in trouble. Then suddenly everyone wants to pal around with the evil D.C. socialist Marxist commie fascists.

All that indoctrination must have worked.

Quickie- GOP: Gays okay, transgenders not so much

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

What must they think about gay dogs?

Three years ago, 35 Republicans voted in favor of a bill that would expand anti-discrimination laws to gays and lesbians, but with Democrats proposing to add transgender people to the measure, far fewer members of the minority party are likely to support it if it comes to a vote this year.

Apparently, transgender people are worth only 3/5 of a gay person, so they don't deserve protection.

Quickie: Finally...Senate to Work Through Backlog of Nominees

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in the coming week wants to clear the backlog of executive and judicial nominees, beginning with a procedural vote Monday night on the nomination of Lael Brainard for an undersecretary position at the Treasury Department.

Gee, that didn't take long. Please note the sarcasm.

Meanwhile, all those nice, well-meaning, wise, evenhanded, fair-minded, eager-to-please, non-activist BushCo judges and other operatives are still in place. Good for them!

I can't wait to see how many nominees will be blocked this time around! Democracy in action.

Quickie: Obama Says He Supports D.C. Voting Rights

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

President Barack Obama on Friday spoke for the first time in support of D.C. voting rights.

Wait, what? He's for voting rights? For people? Why, I bet that even includes gay people! The very idea...

Quickie: How to eat well on a food stamp budget: $68.88

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

A sign of the times:

To find out how well you can eat on food stamps, the AP asked two chefs and a magazine food editor to plan out seven days of meals for a family of four using that budget: $68.88.

I wonder how much it cost to figure that out.

Quickie: Real Dem outraises Blue Dog

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) raised about $1.3 million from January to March, her campaign announced Tuesday. Her challenger, Bill Halter, raised $2 million.

There's a reason Halter is pulling in more cash: He's not a fake Democrat. Blanche, on the other hand, will hopefully have to consider starring in own reality show:

“I think Michael Steele’s problem isn’t the race card, it’s the credit card,” Gibbs added.

Quickie: Tax Cuts and Huge Deficits edition

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

As I read about the CBO's prediction of enormous deficits, this stood out:

The larger deficit so far is due almost entirely to a drop in tax revenue.

The preceding Quickie is dedicated to Tea Tantrumers everywhere.

Quickie: Yoo v. Tiger edition

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

There was a lengthy three-person panel discussion about Tiger Wood's apology worship on the Tee Vee Machine this morning, preceded and followed by extensive reporting on the subject.

There were no panels, three-person or otherwise, about our Department of Justice [sic] allowing torture architects John Yoo and Jay Bybee to skate.

Manufactured contrition for serial boinking monopolizes the air waves. The complete lack of contrition (or consequences) for war crimes gets a brief mention.

Such is the state of the news [sic] media... and our justice system.

Quickie: Aww, Oil Companies Being Harmed edition

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

From the Department of Feigned Shock:

ConocoPhillips announced Tuesday that it is abandoning the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, a major coalition of corporations and environmental groups that’s pushing Congress to approve cap-and-trade legislation.

ConocoPhillips, the country’s third-largest oil company, said that the major House and Senate climate change bills would harm oil companies.

Here's the feigned shock: What?! Oh no!

Poor Big Oil. They're being harmed. We aren't, of course. Just them.

For the second time in as many months, Senate Democrats have prevented Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) from using procedural maneuvers to stall debate, thanks to controversial rulings by the chamber’s Parliamentarian, Alan Frumin.

Quickie: McCain Rants About "Change" edition

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:
I'm watching the Senate health care debate on CSPAN2. I see John McCain waving his arms around, raising his voice as he vociferously mocks Obama's promise of change and bipartisanship in his State of the Union message.

McCain is literally bellowing, "Here we are, ready to sit down and talk!"

I believe he meant, ready to sit down and "block".

And that, J Sid, is why change isn't happening.
