Quickie: Why Did CBS Scrub Story About Army Spy Planes Capturing the Times Square Bomber?

I've bumped this story up with an update. Title has been edited.

How did they catch the New York bomb suspect? Today's Quickie:

Via Gawker:

They intercepted his call reserving a plane ticket to Dubai; authorities nabbed him. [WCBS]

We didn't hear a whole lot about that, did we? But we did get a critical earful about Miranda rights. But not a whole lot of kudos about how-- within what, 53.5 hours?-- they captured the bad guy.

That was today's Quickie. Was it good for you?

Yesterday the above story was scrubbed. But why? Gawker had screen shots of related headlines. Today they report:

According to WCBS, they simply got caught up in the frenzy of breaking news and "inadvertently" put in an unconfirmed detail. There is a problem with this account: The detail about the Army Intelligence planes was featured prominently in the title of the originally article. Clearly, the line wasn't "inadvertently included"—it was put in and deliberately promoted. After all, it was the most eye-catching detail of the story.

Celtic Diva nails it again. I'll give you a couple of excerpts, but go over to her place for some elaboration:

The issue here isn't even that this woman made several bonehead moves on the road...we all screw up occasionally. The outrageous part of the story is that SHE put a 5-month-old and his father in danger by breaking the law and driving like a drunk woman. Then, SHE gave HIM the finger like it was HIS fault!

Preachy McFraudLips' devotees are following in the footsteps of their half-governor, all show and no go. What they lack are ghost writers and palm Sharpies.

BREAKING: Verizon employees hacked Obama's cell phone records

UPDATE: Now they're saying cell phone records, not cell phone. When they first broke the story, I transcribed it word for word. What can I say? Fixing the title.

UPDATE: It was Obama's personal flip-cell phone. No calls involved were from the last couple of weeks, since he gave the phone up awhile ago.

He was notified yesterday. The employees accessed his billing records, so had access to the phone numbers, both incoming and outgoing. No word if they leaked the information, nor on how many employees were involved. No word if they figured out his home number or any other numbers. They don't know the extent of this yet.

It's reminiscent of the passport breach awhile back. And Joe the Plumber's records have been violated, too.

An apology was issued.

Just breaking on CNN:

The cell phone in question is not the phone he uses now, but an old one he used a few months ago. There is an investigation underway.

No Blackberry or email device was attached to it. Verizon employees went through his billing records, and could have shared his information. That is the speculation, but no facts yet to back that up. Obama has been notified, of course.

No criminal investigation by the Secret Service is being done.

Nobody monitored Obama's voice mail.

The Obama transition team is trying to downplay the criminal aspect, deciding whether to turn it over to a prosecutor.
