The "new beginning between the U.S. and Muslims around the world"

By GottaLaff

As it should be:

President Barack Obama appointed a special envoy Saturday to the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the 57-nation organization that calls itself the "collective voice of the Muslim world."

He is Rashad Hussein, an Indian-American Muslim who has been a deputy associate White House counsel, described by Obama as "an accomplished lawyer and a close and trusted member of my White House staff." [...]

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be speaking Sunday at the 7th annual forum and Obama took the opportunity Saturday to laud the event and reiterate what he calls the "new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world" - a relationship that he says has been marred by "misunderstanding and mistrust."

Please read the whole thing here.

Our president shines when it comes to making an effort to bring people together... and his willingness to ignore the small-minded pummeling from his opponents in order to rectify the ill will created by 8 years of BushCo.

VIDEO: Clinton defends Obama's engagement strategy on Iran, N. Korea

By GottaLaff

It's sunny here in SoCal, after two days of rain. Now let's get that other part of the U.S. of A. warmed up!

Of course, if ShootFirst McTalkLater had her way, we'd be bombing Iran, torturing suspects, and while we're at it, reverting back to the Bush economy.

Engagement? Pfft. Diplomacy? Getoutahere! That's for commie socialists.

Round 3: Obama to address DNC gathering

By GottaLaff

(via)

Round 1: House Republicans.

Round 2: Senate Republicans.

Round 3: The DNC.
The president on Saturday will headline the Democratic National Committee's Winter Meeting – an annual gathering of political insiders and grassroots activists who make up the core of the national party, CNN has learned.
He sure is making the, er, rounds.

Too bad he never makes an effort to reach out.

AUDIO- Lou Dobbs: " I’m reaching out right now to Latino groups"

By GottaLaff

Stop me if you've heard this one before. A racist white guy with shockingly racist white veneers decides to run for office and lies with abandon on a radio show:

Balloon floating must be his new hobby now that he's unemployed. Come to think of it, maybe Balloon Boy's dad can be his running mate.

It gets better:

ThinkProgress spoke with Lisa Navarrete, vice president at the National Council of La Raza, the nation’s largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. Navarrette said that Dobbs had not yet reached out to the group at all.
It gets even better than that:
At TAPPED, Tim Fernholz notes that a presidential run could backfire on Dobbs:
A Dobbs run would immediately activate Hispanic voters who are predominately Democratic party supporters [...] and, if Dobbs runs, not only will they be weighing all of the issues that are important to all voters, they'll also be facing a candidate whose careless smears of illegal immigrants and embrace of Minutemen groups have made him a symbol of xenophobia. If that doesn't boost turn-out among that community on election day, I don't know what will.
Oh please run, LouLou. Pleeeease?

Hamas chief hails Obama approach

By GottaLaff

Unclenching a fist is one thing. It would really be something to eventually unclench an entire region:

The political leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, has credited US President Barack Obama with using a "new language" for the Middle East.

Speaking to an Italian newspaper Mr Meshaal also said that an official opening to his Palestinian Islamist movement was only "a matter of time". [...]

Iran and Syria, where Mr Meshaal is exiled, are key backers of Hamas.

Mr Obama's video message to the Iranian leaders and people was seen as a major break with previous US policy.

But in response, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei demanded concrete policy changes from the US. [...]

Mr Meshaal, speaking in an interview with La Repubblica, said "a new language towards the region is coming from President Obama". [...]

"The challenge for everybody is for this to be the prelude for a genuine change in US and European policies," Mr Meshaal said.

"Regarding an official opening towards Hamas, it's a matter of time."

The US, EU and UN will not deal with Hamas, which seized the Gaza Strip in 2007, unless they reject violence and recognise Israel.

NY Times: “I’ve had more unsolicited offers ... from the Obama people in 45 days than in the last 8 years from Bush”

By GottaLaff

(Unrelated photo via)

Yesterday I posted about President Obama (with audio) following up-- unsolicited-- on a (ridiculous) question by the New York Times about whether he was a socialist. Yes, that question.

But here's what isn't ridiculous: Our very smart, very savvy prez isn't just reaching out to Congress, or red states, or Goldendoodles. He's reaching out to the very same conservative media that so often misquotes, disagrees, or outright bashes him:

“I’ve had more unsolicited offers for participation from the Obama people in 45 days than in the last eight years from Bush,” said [Andrew Rosenthal, The Times’ editorial page director].

Rosenthal said the Obama administration’s approach is consistent with the one the Obama campaign used, and for a reason: It worked. Citing an example, he said that an Obama campaign aide succeeded in convincing him back in July — before an editorial ran — that Obama had not, in fact, reversed his position on a controversial D.C. handgun ban.

“With columnists and editorial writers,” Rosenthal said, “I think the theory is that you can actually have an impact.”

Washington Post editorial page editor Fred Hiatt said in an e-mail that the Obama team has been “open and responsive” to requests from The Post’s editorial writers. Hiatt said that helps The Post “produce smarter and more knowledgeable editorials.”

“My general view is, the more exchange of views, the better,” Hiatt added. “I welcome any outreach from the White House to my columnists or editorial board.” [...]

In an interview, [David] Brooks said that Obama’s people respond quickly to columns with which they find fault — but that, in doing so, they refrain from “personal insults,” opting for a “very nice, very evidence-based” approach instead.

The Obama outreach effort is different than Bush’s in part because the previous administration “only reached out to people who automatically agreed with them.” [...]

Rosenthal wondered if the Bush team had the kind of contact with The Wall Street Journal editorial board that the Obama team does now. WSJ editorial page editor Paul Gigot declined comment, but Tony Blankley — who ran The Washington Times’ conservative editorial page during the bulk of Bush’s tenure — suggested that it probably wasn’t so.

Although Blankley said he spoke regularly with senior Bush administration officials, many of whom he’d known for years, he said the Bush press team’s outreach was not as “aggressive in putting out useful things or complaining about editorials they didn’t like” as Obama’s is.

Part of the reason for that, says Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page, is that, like former President Bill Clinton, Obama “likes this sort of thing — the exchange with pundits.” [...]

[The Post's Kathleen] Parker, a conservative who clashed with Republicans over the Sarah Palin nomination, wrote a very personal account of the trip for The Daily Beast. There, she talked about the “adorable” Obama daughters and the president’s calm nature. “If you cut Obama open,” she said, “you’d find a little Buddha sitting inside, smiling.”

The personal touch is important, Dionne said, because “human beings, being who we are, it’s probably harder to eviscerate someone who you’ve sat down with and decided isn’t an evil person.”

Then why didn't they eviscerate Bush?

Dear Iran, Let's talk. Sincerely, President Obama

By GottaLaff

UPDATE: During his daily press briefing, Robert Gibbs just said that State didn't request such a letter, nor did anyone else. Another media report debunked.

Even if Iran doesn't respond the way we'd like, this is the right thing to do:
The Obama administration has "drafted a letter to Iran from the president aimed at unfreezing US-Iranian relations and opening the way for face-to-face talks," the Guardian has learned.

"Diplomats said Obama's letter would be a symbolic gesture to mark a change in tone from the hostile one adopted by the Bush administration, which portrayed Iran as part of an 'axis of evil'. It would be intended to allay the suspicions of Iran's leaders and pave the way for Obama to engage them directly, a break with past policy."
Desire for a break with past policy is exactly why Obama was elected. But the Republicans are politically deaf and continue to push Bush policies, ignoring the smoking wreckage around them.

Follow along as the righties continue to flock to Lord Rush, fawning over him, awaiting each shriek-out of their freak-out: See? See?? Obama's pallin' around with terrorists! He's a Muslim! He hates Israel! He's weak! Why, he's not even an American citizen!

Watching their heads explode over President Obama's impressive efforts will become a regular source of entertainment. Welcome to Wingnut Theatre starring the Dittohead Players. Popcorn available via the lobby(ists).

Obama Transition Team in Touch with Family Research Council

By GottaLaff

Awhile back I posted this about Obama's reaching out to faith groups. Now we can add this follow-up:

When I wrote this week about the Obama transition team's frequent outreach to religious groups in the process of its policy planning and agency review, I noted that politically conservative faith-based outfits like the Family Research Council and the public-policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention hadn't been invited to powwows with president-elect Obama [...]

It turns out that the Obama team has been in touch with the Family Research Council, one of the most powerful conservative Christian advocacy groups in Washington. [...]

FRC spokesperson J.P. Duffy confirms that the Obama team placed the call [to Tony Perkins] but that he was unaware of it when he told me earlier in the week that FRC hadn't been contacted by the president-elect's office. [...]

I'd reported earlier that the Southern Baptist Convention's Richard Land received a phone call from Obama religious affairs director Joshua DuBois, even though Land and his deputies haven't been invited to sit down with the Obama team.

P.E. Obama is nothing if not inclusive.

Typical Obama press coverage

By GottaLaff

This post was originally going to be about the content of an article in The Hill about Obama's "charm offensive" ("Obama Charm Offensive Sways Republicans"), making contact with Congressional Republicans , reaching out to them, blahblah. But this sentence stood out:

The highly personal, hands-on approach marks a change for Obama, who has been described as self-contained and aloof and who, on the campaign trail, often seemed more comfortable speaking to large rallies than in intimate settings.
His "hands-on approach marks change"? Which Barack Obama are they reporting on? I guess that grass rootsy approach and community organizing show what a heartless cold fish he is. I suppose his making personal calls to voters makes him out to be a detached Ice King. I imagine Obama's comforting distraught students reveals what a stand-offish, impersonal recluse he can be.
The friendly gestures seem to be having positive effects. [Rep. Peter] King told Obama that he would not take any political shots at the incoming president.
Yeah, reaching out has never been one of his strong points.

McCain and Obama Camps Coordinated Staff Rosters for Next Government

By GottaLaff

http://www.pet-care.co.nz/images/dog_food_scoop.png
Steve Clemons has a scoop:

A senior Obama campaign official shared with The Washington Note and Huffington Post that in July 2008, the McCain and Obama camps began to work secretly behind the scenes to assemble large rosters of potential personnel for the administration that only one of the candidates would lead.

Lists comprised of Democrats and Republicans were assembled, sorted into areas of policy expertise, so that the roster could be called on after the election by either the Obama or McCain transition teams.

So, either they wanted the appearance of cooperation (or at least a leak indicating as much), or they were actually planning to reach out to the other side, per Clemons. Either way, that was some tightly held info.

I guess as of last summer, Gramm-pa forced himself to look "That One" in the eye at least once, and address him directly. Now that's cooperation.
