Alaska Delegate: Palin Has Dealt With Mongolia and Iceland

It just boggles the mind that these are considered serious people. I'd pretty much bet that Dave Barry's head exploded immediately after this conversation.

Earlier today Mead Treadwell and Nick Stepovich, members of the Alaska delegation, were talking with noted humorist Dave Barry on the floor of the Republican National Convention, when the issue of Sarah Palin's national security experience came up.

Feeling humorous himself, when asked if Alaska's proximity to Russia made Palin more prepared for national office, as some supporters have suggested, Stepovich asked, “If you stand next to Einstein, does that make you a genius?”

Treadwell, chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, quickly interjected. Alaska, he said, shared a billion dollar fishing industry with Russia and is the home of a national missile defense system.

He said he had personally participated with Palin in meetings with foreign leaders. Asked which countries, he said, “Iceland and Mongolia. Admittedly, not major nations."

Are you fucking KIDDING me???????

Um... what about Canada? I know we're all a bunch of commie wannabes, but we do actually share a border with Alaska. You know that the Yukon is just wanting a piece of ANWAR, y'all.

Nevermind. This reason is lamer than lame.

I need coffee...

Kirsten, Canada doesn't count. To most Americans, you either a) simply have yet to be fully integrated in to our country, or b) are like our "special" cousin, Bruce. Thus, Canada is hardly foreign, it's just there.

In seriousness, I was wondering the same thing. Sure, Alaska's "near" Russia, but it's actually right fucking next to Canada. I'm fairly certain that it is overlooked simply because most Americans would not find Canada exotic enough, and therefor, not very foreign. In other words, nothing like Hawaii.

Mongolia and Iceland are countries their respective citizens should feel proud of, but I'm guessing the people she met were more like trade representatives than real policymakers.

Clancy, we do TOO count. We would count more if we shut off the valves to the natural gas, oil, and water, though.

@John Lester: Well, not exactly just trade representatives. Last year, Palin had a one hour meeting with the Icelandic president, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.

Granted, the Icelandic president is more like the British Queen than the US president - but still, he is the head of state.

I'm Icelandic btw.
