Forgive me, media, for I have sinned. Last night I called Rudy Giuliani "shrill". I didn't realize it was wrong. I didn't realize it was sexist. I didn't realize-- what? It's only wrong if you say it when referring to a woman? Boyoboy, am I relieved, because last night on CNN the talking heads were all over Harry Reid for using the S word, but he directed it at poor, demure, female Sarah Louise Palin:
A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is hitting back hard at Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's speech Wednesday night, calling it "shrill and sarcastic."Within seconds of reading Reid's statement, Wolf Blitzer threw it to Dana Bash to confirm-- yes, confirm-- that there was no doubt whatsoever that the S word was aimed at Palin and only Palin. Had it been used to describe Giuliani or Huckabee or Romney, and Palin, it would have been totally acceptable."Anyone who knows Senator Reid knows he never backs down when he's fighting for what's right and that he always stands up to John McCain when he is wrong," Jim Manley, Reid's press secretary, told CNN. "Shrill and sarcastic political attacks may fire up the Republican base, but they don't change the fact that a McCain-Palin administration would mean four more years of failed bush-Cheney policies."
Dana stammered and fell all over herself to say, yes, yes, Reid was referring solely to Palin, and here's the paper to prove it. It was confirmed. There was no room for error. He said "shrill". About a girl.
Wolf then made the declaration, as did his co-talkers, that because of that one word, used on Governor Female, all bets were off. Any future criticism of her nasty, tasteless lies would be null and void.
Never mind Palin's negativity. Ignore Governor Lipstick's misrepresentations, or the fact that her speech was devoid of any real substance. The word "shrill" trumped all of that. So much for a level playing field.
