Community organizer = code

By GottaLaff

Thom Hartmann put us on alert today. He warned us that within a week, the Republicans will make the phrase "community organizer" their own, and it will be turned against the Democrats. They will use it as code for "black". And we all know that "black" = "scary". Therefore, Obama is black, and therefore, scary. Hartmann was begging everyone to let the Obama campaign know they should immediately make the association positive again, meaning "community organizer" = "good, productive, and safe".

How pathetic that this is even a conversation we have to have:

The four mocking mentions last night of Barack Obama's service as a "community organizer" have ignited a metapshereic debate about whether the term has racial connotations.

The McCain campaign says no: they insist that no one knows what a community organizer is, and whatever they think it is, it doesn't compare to being a mayor. [...]

Indeed, the Obama campaign knows that many Americans don't know what a community organizer does, and they've changed the way they refers to Obama's experience too. When he talks about community organizing now, he references his organizing work for churches. That embeds the work in a more familiar context. Inner city Catholics know what community organizers do, certainly.
So Obama is listening, apparently.
But community organizers tend to work with poorer folks, and there's some chatter among Democrats that it's a subtle way to highlight Obama's urbanity. Some Obama aides see it as a knock against the poor and their material needs.
Let's not be naive. It was an obvious slight, and it wasn't about his lack of experience.
I think it's a cultural trope, like when Rudy Giuliani (lacking, I might add, any sense of irony or awareness of his own life), referred last night to Obama's "cosmopolitan" background. It stirs up resentments. It makes elite Republicans feel comfortable with themselves. The audience repeatedly laughed; they got the joke. The question is: what was the joke?
There are no jokes, as they say. And if there are, they only succeed when both the joke teller and the audience think it's funny... the whole audience. Take it from a former stand-up comedian.

UPDATE: Community organizers are not happy.

Sickening.

I had a pol-sci textbook with an essay entitled, "Would We Know a Well-Run City if We Saw One?" Community organizers are a positive trend towards improving city life, I think.

Yup, I said to count the number of times you hear that "community organizer" phrase being used last night.

It's gross.

GottaLaff said...

Anything that organizes, and includes the community, has to be positive.

Where is the negative?

Community organizers usually work in the inner city and often deal with African Americans and other radicals--who are also elitist street thugs just like Senator Obama.

I dunno. Republicans don't make a lick of sense to me.

It certainly sends the whole "big tent" idea out the window.

If Obama is "cosmopolitan" what is Giullani other than "ass"?

BTW, what is the PTA? She seems to mention her role in that community organization alot as part of her credentials.

Interesting watching cable news today. Last night they were gushing about Palin, but today it looks like they sobered up a bit.

Jon, gone with the wind, to use an interesting metaphor. I don't know if you followed my link from another post, but here it is:

Joe, seriously? PTA? Parent Teachers Association.

Laffy, I know what the PTA stands for, I was being snarky.

I think that we can sometimes read too much in to these things. This may be one of those times.

While it's likely that for some the term may have certain racial connotations, for the overwhelming majority, it will have none. This is hardly a dog-whistle word, as it has very little cultural currency.

In all likelihood, the McCain campaign is being honest on this one: they're just assholes who are belittling average Americans who selflessly work in cities and towns across the country so that others can have better lives. You know, nothing nearly as important as being the mayor of BFE, AK.

GottaLaff said...

I pretty much suspected that, Joe, but it was a touch hard to tell for sure. ; )

I saw it...and the Republicans would be much better off employing Herman Cain to do what Michael Steele's tried to do, but I think Cain hasn't even pretended to be happy about the Republican situation this year.

I'm in the damned PTA, please people. Any crazed parent can join--you just sign the sign up sheet.

I hate the PTA, but I get guilted into it EVERY year. And it really is a waste of time.

I refuse to be part of the PTA. The Mommy Mafia out in force with their designer clothes and Manolos and fancy SUVs. I hate the bitches. They think I am crazy for not trying to find some miracle cure for Emma, or get her a CI. I keep telling them she doesn't qualify for a CI yet, but they look at it as a cure for deafness.
Idiots.

JoeinGeneva said...

Laffy, I should have be clearer, I should have said "Isn't the PTA a community organization?"

The PTA describes itself as a "volunteer child advocacy association." By dissing "community organizers" isn't she dismissing members of the PTA?

Jon Lester said...

Kirsten, I see I'm not alone in recognizing that some of those PTA moms are the ones who most actively live vicariously through their cheerleader daughters down the road.

I never liked 'em either, KPed. And I had a few run-ins with them. They condemned me for wanting to have 12-13 year-olds perform Vitameatavegamin.

No, I'm not kidding.

GottaLaff said...

Oh, and Joe, I got the joke, but then wondered if it was one... so no worries, I understand fully now.

I've done that a million times. I'll comment, and someone will misunderstand, or I haven't been clear enough in a post.

It happens all the time. : )

Gotta disagree, Clancy.

I think that Community Organizer does have cultural currency with the GOP base.

It is code for "colored people trying to gain political power to get what rightfully belongs to white folk."

We don't call white PTA soccer moms rallying for a cause community organizers ... we call them PTA soccer moms. The only people that we call community organizers are those that advocate for the poor minority people among us.

Nobody here likes me b/c I'm in the PTA? Oh, my...

What do you people have against mommas who drink hot tea and eat cucumber sandwiches anyway?

(BTW I am trying to get rid of the SUV. Give me a little break. I've got cookies to bake right after I get my manicure).

Jon Lester said...

Somebody has to try to right the PTA's course, Ady, thankless though it may be.

Bucky said...

Ads, not sure why you think nobody likes you because you are in the PTA. I totally respect that and am glad that people are willing to do it.

I tried when my son was in first grade. Lasted about two weeks. The meetings were almost daily and soooo long and boring and painful. I've never seen such animosity among a group of people. And I was raised as a Pentacostal -- people whose hate knows no bounds.

I applaud you for going where I could not.

Kirsten said...

I don't hate you, Ady, I hate the moms I know in the PTA. Could be different elsewhere.

And how do you stay awake during PTA meetings? I'm curious.

Adrienne said...

Yes, that's my life's mission. By God, I'm here just to whip those bitches into shape. I'm the REAL reformer here.

Actually, I'm a very bad PTA member. Hey, I had the kids. Just teach them and leave me the hell alone. My second kid is a genius. And the first one doesn't do work, but is a gifted athlete. He could be dumb. He never does work so it's hard to tell.

My mother was the president of the PTA when I was in elementary school. She organized the annual school fair. She's qualified to be VP, except that she turns 93 in a couple weeks and is a flaming liberal who likes everyone...
(Sometimes I get the feeling that my upbringing was unlike most of yours)

Adrienne said...

Kirsten, I don't--I sleep.

Bucky said...

Chris, your mother was a flaming liberal who liked everyone?

Yeah, pretty much the opposite of my childhood.

My parents were flaming fundie assholes who hated everyone.

How lucky for you.

Adrienne said...

Bucky, I feel your pain.

chris said...

Yeah, Buck, but it's rather annoying at times. I'm sure if I asked her about Sarah Palin she'd say that she seemes energetic, dressed nicely, and had a nice smile. She won't vote for the bitch, but she'd never say anything nasty about her.
Plus, she's got a busier social life than I do 'cause she likes everyone so everyone likes her. (she went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras in 2007 & 2008, and came home with beads!) It's really disgusting.

Yeah, I am lucky.

Bucky said...

okay, Chris, you win.

and thanks for the visual of your 93 year old mother showing her boobs for beads at Mardi Gras.

must poke out own eyes now.
