Video: Jack Cafferty: Palin is a first term governor in a state with 13 people and some caribou

By GottaLaff

And here are some bonus quotes, kids!

Via an e-mail from Jeff Stein (can't link, I don't know his sources):

Here's another scathing assessment (Republicans are not happy):

I think it's an unserious -- even fairly offensive -- choice. McCain isn't even officially his party's nominee yet, and he's already treating his presumptive office with disdain, and making executive decisions that seem like they've been phoned in or made in a panic.

Don't tell me it's his "brave" choice because she's a woman -- the Republican Party has many women more qualified for the Vice Presidency. I don't agree with them on issues, but they'd be more qualified. This choice is indeed akin to choosing Quayle -- it smacks of choosing someone because they won't get in the way, or because all the other potential candidates were too personally threatening. It's just a bad choice, period.

And from a March 2007article in Alaska Business Monthly:

ABM: We've lost a lot of Alaska's military members to the war in Iraq. How do you feel about sending more troops into battle, as President Bush is suggesting?

Palin: I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq.

For such a short amount of time, there's been a wealth of material.

I just watched NewsHour -- very interesting. One man-- sorry missed who he is, but I think newspaper editor -- said she had easy contests to be gov. Has never faced anything like what this will be.

Brooks and Shields was good, too. Yes, she did well today. Not indicative of much of anything. The only day Mondale led was when he announced Ferraro.

How will all those red staters who believe Unions are the work of evil communists going to feel when they learn her husband is a union member?

How will she hold up? When my kids were babies, I was exhausted all the time.

Then again, she must have "help".

And Mrs. Union Guy will have some 'splainin' to do.

Eve, I'm sure he's only a union member because he has to be (closed shop). There's all sorts of code words they can use to indicate this to the base . . . of course, unions are pretty good at picking up on them too.

I'm very interested in seeing the media reports and investigations that will soon be trotted out. Certainly, they will start interviewing old friends and neighbors. She's from a small town, there's bound to be all sorts of things about which are "compelling." Plus, she's a Fundie, I'm going to be very interested in seeing what her husband is like. With those folks, that can be a good tell.

Tweety is blowing off the whole investigation into trooper=gate with a "maybe he's a bad guy". I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's how the media treats her. They'll accept what is said by the GOP, not investigate, and mock anyone who has serious doubts about her.
Please let me be wrong.

You're not wrong. The first thing this a.m., they were all saying the same thing on MSNBC: Well, he was a bad, abusive guy, so this will be a wash.

That has nothing to do with it. She abused her power.

Can't say Jack's ever been too PC with anyone but I knew I'd find a headline here as soon as he said it today :)

I'd like to see a debate moderated by a panel of media curmudgeons. I know I'd like Cafferty and CNBC's Mark Haines as two of the curmudgeons but I'm not sure who'd be the best choice to round out a panel.

Clancy, McCain introduced her as a former union member and her husband as a union member. Tone deaf McCain was using it as a reason to like her.
Alaska is a union state -- but McCain was endorsing their union memberships.

Eve, I'm guessing Alaskan labor unions have their pension funds invested in Big Oil if any unions do. It might be part of the larger attempt to split voters on energy policy, however clumsy or blatant it may appear.

I imagine that the Palins do since her husband works for BP.

Jon said...

I don't know what to make of it, but if you know about BP's troubles in Russia, you just have to wonder what more there is to the big picture.

Thank, Jon! I'm there.

gottalaff, I noticed that link comes from March. I just chose the link for expedience and value as an introduction. There has been almost daily news of compounding malaise in the TNK-BP partnership.

Since writing the above sentence, I went to Moscow Times and found the latest story is secret talks to hammer out a permanent deal. Interesting I'd find that headline today, of all days, because it sure wasn't looking good for the partnership before today.

The future of petroleum supply is the Arctic Circle, and most of that belongs to Russia. Palin and her BP-employed husband ought to particularly understand that. What makes no sense about this ticket is McCain's apparent desire to actively antagonize Russia, as he's done long before the recent events in the Caucasus (and before we found out about Scheunemann's lobbying for Georgia). I can only wonder what McCain's adviser-handlers are really up to, or if the team's incompetence really is worse than we thought.
