YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
What Kos said-
Let's be honest: John McCain clearly wanted Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman, but he was afraid to buck his party's choice ideologues. So then they looked at Mittens, but having a baker's dozen homes wasn't looking so hot. So he figured that with Pawlenty, he might make a play for Minnesota, but that got shot down over the last week as it become increasingly obvious that Biden would wipe the floor with him in their debate.
Throw in Obama's ground-shifting speech last night, and it was clear that McCain had to throw a hail mary to just remain in the game, much less be competitive.
So we get Sarah Palin, who has a fairly compelling personal story and is an attractive woman, but has scant political experience, zero name recognition outside of political junky circles, faces an ethical investigation by her own legislature, and will now be forced to run a grueling national campaign despite having an infant child at home.
Those are the marks of desperation, and really, given his precarious electoral position, John McCain had no choice.

Wow. Lame.
ROTFLMAO!!
Bring on the inspection of the corruption in Alaska BABY!!!!!!!!!
AHHHHHHHHH shucks, thanks McPOWPOW for such an early birthday gift
Doesn't her husband work for an oil company?
Just posted a comment to an earlier post ... no way the fundie base is going to go for a woman.
Of course, this pits one prejudice against the other.
Hmmmmm ...
What to do ... woman or black man ... think I'll just stay home!
Sweet.
Ayup. Buchanan is having an orgasm.
She came in 2nd place of the Miss Alaska losing to an African American.
Time to lose again!!!
http://www.missalaskapageant.com/50yearsofmissalaska.html
Paddy, very apt analysis of Buchanan.
Buchanan is saying that she's enormously exciting, she'll energize the base...biggest political risk he's seen but it speaks well of McCain's grit & guts, like a small fighter plane landing on a carrier.
(I'm still laughing)
It sounds like Scarborough is very skeptical.
She stills the buzz. But what a lousy choice! The buzz ends with Gustav.
Bucky, I agree the fundies will not approve. She has a tiny baby.
Cannot wait for the debates!
The fighter pilot analogy made me LOL. What a tool.
Mike Murphy thinks it might be a strategic mistake to play to the base. That may be the only smart thing I have ever heard him say.
Before I gave up on McCain, I was advocating this choice. I still think it's a good one but I'm not sure if having Canada and Russia as border states will necessarily override McCain's stubborn and dated foreign policy views.
damn -- meant to say steals the buzz for a day or two
Kos is right. Disparate choice.
I'm so happy!
Regarding the investigation of the ex-brother-in-law she may have tried to remove from the state police: would you want your sister married to one? God bless people who serve in that capacity but they're not famous for having happy marriages.
That's all I have to offer in Palin's defense today. She's accepted this invitation so she's on her own now.
We are seeing the beginning of the great unraveling of the modern Republican party. For too long, the wildly at-odds factions have been held together by the cult of personality. First with Reagan (and by residual energy Bush I) and then with W. But McCain has no personality and he can't keep the fractious parts (corporatists, Christianists, bigots, anti-abortionists, homophobes, anti-taxers, rich fucks, etc) from demanding their due.
I'm not sure who McCain was hoping to appeal to with Palin (if the rumors are true). I get the idea of not needing to appeal to your base, Clancy, but this goes beyond not appealing. This is going to be a negative for them. They already weren't that excited, given McCain's past support of abortion rights and such, and this isn't going to help at all. Certainly, they aren't going to vote for Obama (he's black for fuck's sake). But they aren't going to turn out to vote for a new mother either. Just don't see it happening.
This is good news for Dems.
Todd on the ethics investigation: Palin's side of the story is that she was punishing her sister's ex-husband, who had been beating her.
I'm pretty sure that Palin's side is that she wasn't involved in having her ex-brother-in-law fired, but let's pretend Todd is right. Is the US ready for another VP who uses elected office to get personal revenge?? If the guy was beating her sister, then she should have worked within the law & had him arrested.
(sorry, said it to the teevee box, but no one was listening there)
Spot the fuck on chris. That is brilliant analysis by you young lady!!
This is very appealing... to the ape-shit crazy vote. He doesn't get it... female Hillary supporters supported HER, Hillary fireball Clinton, not just any random woman. So he's going for the 3 insane PUMAS left. Great. Have at 'em.
Or it could be McPOW thinks Joe Biden will not knock out a woman, they maybe he will slack off because of gender.
What do you think Laffy?
Oops, meant "that" not they
Bets this is a real non choice? As in everyone else turned McCain down because they wouldn't run with a losing campaign and end their own political future? She may lose but in the end has time to come back.
Bucky, Palin is playing to the base, at least by Murphy's take on it. She a right-wing nut job. He just believed that picking her was a mistake, as it shows weakness/desperation. I think he wanted McCain to go with Ridge or Lieberman.
Sarah Palin appears to be the Vice Presidential nominee for the Party of Family Values, the Party of Family first, the Party of take care of your children.
This is an appalling choice, and she will withdraw within the week, I predict.
The reason is simple: This decision is a total contra-family values decision.
On April 18, 2008, Sarah Palin gave birth to a child with Down's syndrome. This is, for some, a moment to affirm their family values credentials. Other families are greatly affected by the presence of such a child. The Down's child is VERY DEMANDING time-wise.
Here is a comment from a publication from a family physician about children with this condition:
The care of the infant or young child with Down syndrome can be complicated and may involve a myriad of immediate and long-term medical problems and psychosocial issues.
The quote is taken from "Primary Care of Infants and Young Children with Down Syndrome", by REBECCA B. SAENZ, M.D., published in American Family Physician, 1999.
URL: http://www.aafp.org/afp/990115ap/381.html
Another quote:
The psychologic benefit derived from the bonding of mother and infant can be extremely important at a time when, because of the infant's disability, the mother may be questioning her own adequacy.
Does Family Values mean ANYTHING to the Party of Values? If it means anything, it means TAKING CARE OF YOUR FAMILY. It is clear that Sarah Palin has decided that her own naked ambition and lust for the power of the Vice President have led her to consign this child to the dustbin. What kind of family values are those?
Anon: good post
I think the party of Dobson and the other Family First folks will be appalled at this choice.
anon, eve, you both assume that those family values folks are a bunch of hypocrites.
Uhhhhh, Clancy, do you actually know any family values folks?
Hyprocicy is the nicest of the words I'd use to describe them.
It's just like care for the poor. The fundies don't look for that metric in a candidate even though the new testament clearly advocates for the poor. "Family values" in the political realm doesn't mean actual care and nurturing for your own family.
Is she an evangelical? Check. Is she anti-choice? Check (I think). Was she married before she produced her child in a heterosexual manner? Check.
"(R)" after her name? Check.
That's all that matters. I see Dobson pivoting big-time now and offering full-throated support with this ticket.
I feared a year ago that McCain would win the primaries and pick Brownback to solidify the fundy support. Palin fit seems to fit that mold.
That said, I'm still not concerned.
Donnie, I agree with your check list, but still know that the fundies are going to have a huge problem with her. They might get past it ... they are defined by nothing if not their immense stupidity and willingness to be led like sheep to the slaughter. Even still it is going to be a tough sell to the base (not necessarily to the leadership of the base, such as Dobson). I'll wait and see how my fundie family responds ... they are always a good bellweather for such things.
Palin may be pro gun and anti-choice, but she's apparently a recent convert to the anti-toking contingency.
Shame.

Sorry, should have excerpted in the last comment:
Palin doesn't support legalizing marijuana, worrying about the message it would send to her four kids. But when it comes to cracking down on drugs, she says methamphetamines are the greater threat and should have a higher priority.
Palin said she has smoked marijuana -- remember, it was legal under state law, she said, even if illegal under U.S. law -- but says she didn't like it and doesn't smoke it now.
Gotta love that "doesn't smoke it now" -- you know, now that she's running for VP on the GOP ticket.
Frankly, I'd think now would be the best time to be smoking "it."
I love the You Tube video of her being interviewed where she says she doesn't know what the VP does! Perfect pick there John. We now need a "VP for Dummies" Book.
I think it is apalling that McCain picked Sarah Pallin. Clearly he is desperate and wants female votes - particularly the ones that went to Hillary. As a woman I also feel that it is apalling that Sarah Pallin who is supposed to stand up for women is letting herself "get used" like this. Clearly she has no experience to lead this country - imagine if McCain who is past his old age were to conk off - imagine Sarah Pallin as our President. Makes me shudder. She has no experience to lead - the world is NOT a hockey field - the games are lot more dangerous
Bucky, the media will have to win the day for McNeedwomenvotes. I just don't see anyone (outside of Olbermann/Maddow) pointing out her family negligence, and even then, it will be shot down because conventional wisdom says you can't be critical of someone with a Down's child. Ugh.
Bucky, now that you mention it, I also find it discouraging that she seems intent on undermining Alaska's constitutional tolerance of marijuana cultivated for personal use.
Liberals are at least open to the question of why the magical constitutional right to privacy goes out the window if the police find out someone's smoking pot in their own home. The other side seems hostile to the whole range of choices.
Jon, the righties are open to the interventionist government when it comes to marijuana because, as my grandmother would say ... "MARY-JEW-WANNA ... isn't that the evil drug that the [insert any vile racist word for African-American people here] like to use?"
Nevermind that half her grandchildren are growing and toking out behind the barn.
On many levels, the GOP war on drugs is all about racism.
You have to admit that Sarah Palin is pretty hot (remember she was in the Ms. Alaska Pageant) and MUCH BETTER on the eyes than Joe Biden. Oh and wait until you see the bikini pics!!! NOT BAD for a mother of 5.

I coudn't Agree with the above comment more. I mean I'm listening to the news and I am so ashamed. Women need to be smarter than this. McCain knows what he is doing. I mean she has a child with down syndrome, gave birth, and went to work within days of having her baby. Come on now! Stop this mess. I hope November 4 hurry ups and come. Palin is really a Obama girl. She supports his energy policy.
Look, you are all a bunch of clueless liberal idiots and here is how I know. She is the base. Conservative women, all evangelicals, Mormons..these are people I talk to EVERYDAY. And they are THRILLED! There is excitement over this like I have not seen in a while. You could not be more WRONG. Palin was the shrewdest, best choice McCain could have made. When Palin spoke today, the base HEARD her. Just like liberals HEARD Obama the other night. I am telling you, you dont know my people. They love her or they will love her soon. McCain could win and she will mop the floor with Biden. You watch. She may be president someday. You just dont know or understand middle America.
The women I know won't miss the obvious vote grab. John is banking on stupid women voting for the skirt because they wanted Hillery. They will look at the past 8 years and Mr McCains policies. As the male of the species I am not right often but I bet he will find out shortly that pro life window dressing is not likely to win votes.
To be fair I don't know anything about her and I expect she is a wonderful, smart and ambitous person and I wish her luck. However, those qualities are not why the boys club invited her.
One of the speakers last night talked about the race being close.
I have an answer. You have to have a land line to be polled. The newest of the voters have cell phones. The reality is that the race is not close at all.
