Obama's speech seen by 38 million viewers

Hot damn.

NEW YORK (AP) — Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention was seen by more than 38 million people.

Nielsen Media Research said more people watched Obama speak than watched the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final "American Idol" or the Academy Awards this year. Obama talked before a live audience of 80,000 people in Denver.

His TV audience nearly doubled the amount of people who watched John Kerry accept the Democratic nomination to run against President Bush four years ago. Kerry's speech was seen by just over 20 million people.

Obama's audience might be higher, since Nielsen didn't have an estimate for how many people watched Obama on PBS or C-SPAN Thursday night.

Is there a Nielsen box at Times Square?

I was a cspan viewer. I also told everyone I know to watch on CSpan as well. The more accurate count is probably closer to 50 million.

anon, you must know a lot of people!

Awesome! It was so great that my husband watched it and my 12 year-old baby wants to watch it tonight.

He did his 6th grade research paper last year on Senator Obama and then spent the rest of the school year having to tell everyone that Obama is NOT a Muslim. See, a 6th grader can even get it right after a little bit of research.

Just gotta say that I'm in a sweet and hopeful mood today. After the past few admittedly cranky weeks (yes Clancy, I've been seriously cranky) I couldn't be happier with the current state of things. Last night was amazing. Obama was pitch perfect. As even Pat B. realized, he spoke to the heart of America.

And today with the Palin choise, we see that McCain has noting to run on but guns, gays and gametes. The three G's of GOP politics. Good luck with that this year, haters; I don't see it working again.

uhhhh, that would be choiCe. you all get it.

This Palin chick is a traitor--McMansions even voted against equal pay for women, for crying out loud. Where can I find her record?

This is NOT a substitute Hillary. Palin also threw Geraldine Ferraro a bone. So, she was throwing the racists a bone. At least that's how they do racial politics in SC. Ferraro's has come up in some Senate races down here.

McMansions is really a piece of shit. What does Palin say about all the ice that's melting in her state and the fact that it's 96 degrees in my drive way all the way down here in SC at the end of August?

One of the commenters in another thread opined that Palin would end up having to withdraw from the race.

I think they may be right.

Clancy said...

I've read that on several sites now, but can't seem to grasp why it is that so many think it will happen.

What's your take, Eve?

Clancy said...

BTW, if it happened, it would be a total disaster for McCain. I like to throw around "landslide," but I don't actually think one will happen. If McCain is forced to backtrack on this pick, it will be a total laugher. Obama will even win some of the deep-red southern states.

Bucky said...

Damn, Clancy. You are backtracking on "landslide" just when I was starting to believe you.

Clancy said...

I'm more confident about it now than ever, but it was always what I like to call a "Democratic Landslide," which roughly translates to 271 EC votes.

Just kidding.

I hate predictions, because I always turn out wrong, but this will be a sizable Obama victory. He'll pick up most of the "swing states" and 2-3 "red states." It won't be a Reagan in '84, or Johnson in '64, but it won't be nearly as close as 2000 or '04. Definitely over 300 electoral votes though, and maybe as many as 340.

C-Span has the best coverage:
NO UNNECESSARY "YAKKITY-YAK"...

**Raise your hands if you'll be watching next week's Republican Convention???? I thought so...

If Palin does withdraw, it will be because some members of the Republican Party will pressure McCain to let her go!!

I'm sure that they're in shock..
and disbelief over his choice!!

DEMOCRATS BY A LANDSLIDE???

Withdraw? After what the GOP did to Tom Eagleton when he was forced to withdraw? That would be too sweet.

THE BIG BLUNDER!!!!!

McCain's desparation is showing!!!

But of course most bias media is putting a "SUPER SPIN" on McCain's gross lack of judgment and intelligence.
And some members of the GOP are "smiling..and clenching their teeth" while they speak on camera about how BOLD, DARING & SMART that McCain's choice is!!

ALL ARE LIARS!!!

Behind closed doors, they're wringing their hands in despair!!
We're sure they're asking the very same question that MOST INTELLIGENT
PEOPLE are asking..
"Why would any presidential candidate select a governer or anyone for that matter as his running mate; with absolutely no credible foreign policy experience??

Oh that's right, SHE'S A WOMAN... SHE'S A SUBSTITUTE FOR HILLARY... AND ALL THOSE 18 MILLION WOMEN WILL FLOCK TO MCCAIN... Oh, silly me!!

That's the "John McCain" Sure-Fire Strategy to WIN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!

I'm wondering what Cindy thinks about hubby's choice??? So far, we haven't heard!!! Hummmmm???

Barack Obama's speech was heard by over 40 million people!!!

PBS & C-Span doesn't pay Neilson to calculate their viewers. And what about the crowds that gathered on New York's Time Square?

Did anyone count them?? We believe that more people watched that Thursday Night, then watched the SUPER BOWL!!!
