Howard Fineman, on MSNBC just now, suggested that the McCain campaign is going to go all humble and small and unpretentious on us. Know why? Because they've been outdone by powerhouse Barack Obama and his drop-dead-impressive acceptance speech, and they know it.
So what's a newly-housebroken J Sid to do? Why, according to Mr. Fineman, put off their own convention, and reinvent it as a puny townhall meeting. Probably wise, considering they can't seem to be able to fill their original venue. Obama, on steroids tonight, has cut J Sid down to size:
Republican officials said yesterday that they are considering delaying the start of the GOP convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul because of Tropical Storm Gustav, which is on track to hit the Gulf Coast, and possibly New Orleans, as a full-force hurricane early next week.Oh, it's all about Gustav. We see.
"Senator McCain has always been sensitive to national crisis," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds, noting that the senator postponed announcing his presidential candidacy in 2000 because of the war in the Balkans.Mr. Sensitive. Uh-huh. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the anemic, and inaccurate, response to Obama's blockbuster, in-your-face speech. Uh-huh.
Oh-h, but wait. There's an undercurrent to all of this (no pun):
A hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico could also cast unwelcome attention on the offshore oil rigs that McCain has championed as a solution to rising gasoline prices -- they are now being evacuated in the face of the coming storm. So much for his energy policy. And who else might be cowering at the thought of Hurricane Obama?
White House press secretary Dana Perino said yesterday that it was "premature to say" whether the storm might have an impact on Bush's scheduled appearance Monday night.Buh-bye, Georgie. Wait! I hear a familiar voice, and it's... yes, it's whimpering.
Some Republicans bemoaned an apparent GOP curse when it comes to summer storms and noted the contrast between the approach of Gustav and the sunny weather in Denver for the Democrats. "The Republicans can't seem to catch a break when it comes to August and when it comes to the weather," said Karl Rove, a former Bush adviser, on Fox News yesterday.Awww. Rove can't catch a break. I have nothing but sympathy.
I lied.

The Post article mentions nothing about the real reason for a possible delay... and it has nothing to do with ol' Gustav.
It's all about tonight.
Off subject:
Gotta, where's Paddy? I have terrible news for her. It hit me hard:
LOS ANGELES — David Duchovny has entered a rehabilitation facility for sex addiction.
In a statement released Thursday by his lawyer, Stanton Stein, the actor said he did so voluntarily, adding: "I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family."
The actor's publicist, Flo Grace, confirmed the rehab report, which first appeared on People.com.
She and Stein both declined to elaborate further.
Duchovny, 48, plays a sex-obsessed character on the Showtime series "Californication," which earned Emmy nominations for casting and cinematography. The show's second season begins Sept. 28.
"All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time," the network said in a statement.

I wouldn't want to have to follow that performance either. I would look for any reason to bail on what was already going to be a puny event anyway.
How are you, Laffy?
Good to see you again. I hope to meet one fine day and have a chuckle or two when all this is over.
Maybe at next years NN?
BTW look for a new music video that I'm currently writing and recording. Should be ready in about two weeks.
In tribute to Ted Kennedy and this historic campaign, it is entitled: Yes We Can and Yes We Will.
I'll interlace video from Ted's convention speech, Obama's acceptance speech and the Yes We Can speech.
Hope you like it.
J.
Yes, Mr. Rove, the country is SO very worried about the fact that the fucking GOP can't get a break when it comes to summer storms. I'd be more worried about the fact that the PEOPLE in New Orleans can't seem to catch the break, but that's just me. They're probably scared to death, but go ahead and keep complaining about how the GOP has suffered because of summer storms. I would like to choke that man. I swear to God, I'd love to choke Mr. Rove.
Rove and the GOP are such ass wipes.
Heh. And where was McCain during Katrina? Celebrating his birthday, complete with cake, with George Bush. No joke.
I live in Upstate SC and we were still feeling the effects of tropical storm Faye (or Fay) throughout this afternoon. We had torrential rain (we needed it), but the severe weather we could have done without.
Excuse me for not being able to muster sympathy for Bush/McCain/Rove. I can't believe Rove said that.
Oh, cool. So, 3 years after a huge national disaster the GOP has started paying attention to the weather channel. Wonderful.
You don't think that this recent mess with Russia, NATO, Georgia, and the USA has anything to do with US Republican politics, right? Well, I do. And now Russia is threatning the EURO community to withhold petro, and maybe tomorrow it'll be antural gas. Hang on to you wallet. I wonder what McPains chances are when we're talking $5 or $6.
Also, free advice to President Bush (Although it may cost him plenty to ignore it).
Don't Let Your Mouth Write A Check That Your Ass Can't Cash
Economically and militarly speaking, the good old USA is a mess. As a colonial power, it is entering into the twilight zone. Thanks, Mr. Bush. You're doing a great job!
Of course, in the above, I am referring to recent events in which the United States has been seriously out-smarted and out-maneuvered by the Russians.
Mr. Bush has recently be threatening Russia for it's self-defense actions in Gerogia (kind of like his own self-defense actions in Iraq, but the threats to Russian were not based on lies, but were are for real). Now he's sending ships there. This is another example of Mr. Bush's knack of doing the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time. I sure the Russians are trembling it their boots.
Mr. Bush, if they're smarter than you are, bigger than you are, and better positioned geographically than you are, your best tactic is to keep your mouth shut. And you can call the ships home or leave them there untill they rust--nobody really gives a damn for your empty gesture.
Do you thing it makes a difference if Obama or Mclain is elected? Naw, it doesn't. If you prefer black to white, vote for Obama. If you prefer white, vote for McClain. If you don't give a damn about color, don't bother to vote.
I can recommend a great German resturaunt in Ohio that the GOP could hold the convention in . . .
I agree. I think all eyes should be on the next hurricane so we can witness the administration blow it again applying thier nasty ideology to the real world.
Anon @ 5:43,what in the hell are you talking about? Black and white BS...This election is only about black and white for people like you. Give me a break.
There's a BIG difference between Obama & McCain and it isn't just the color of their skin. WTF is your problem?
After reading that WaPo article, I have one question: Why does God hate the Republicans?
I am really worried about the people on the Gulf coast. However, as far as the Republican convention is concerned, I still keep smiling over the fact that they prayed for rain to disrupt Obamas convention, sorry, can't help it.
I so wish I had predicted this out loud somewhere instead of just in my head! What they seriously don't want is: people rehashing Katrina, the birthday cake, etc. and a split screen convention with torrential rain and wind opposite McSame.
Okay, I don't understand. Minnesota is not located on the Gulf Coast so what exactly does their convention have to do with Gustav.
If we here along the coast are proceeding with business as usual, then so should they.
Oooooooohhhhhhhhhhh, I get it they are running from Hurricane Obama, my bad.
