Republicans Not Very Popular

Taegan wraps it up, but I want to note that all of a sudden some of those on the right are noticing that the crazy talk isn't helping.

First Read: "During the first 11 weeks of the Obama presidency, congressional Republicans have achieved this feat: They have maintained (for the most part) a unified opposition to Obama and the Democratic agenda. All Republicans, save for three moderate GOP senators, voted against Obama's stimulus. And every single Republican voted against the Democratic budget. But looking at recent polls, we've got to ask: Where has this gotten the GOP so far? The recent New York Times/CBS poll showed the Republican Party's favorability rating at an all-time low, matching the result from last month's NBC/WSJ poll."

The GOP spin from a strategist: "My sense is we are making progress towards reclaiming mantle of fiscal responsibility, which is first step towards rebuilding. Obama is hugely popular, which makes for a tough environment. But that will/must fade with time, and we'll get our second look from public."

Do they really want violence?

The reason I ask is because I lived thru the 90's watching the UPS guy going off every weekend to his "training" and listened to the guys at the junkyard scree on about how Bill Clinton was going to turn them all into homosexual pussy Rhodes Scholars. Ya know. Now we got this shit.

Anyone who has been around Texas for any length of time knows exactly what we'd do if the going got rough in America. Let there be no doubt about that. As Sam Houston once said, "Texas has yet to learn submission to any oppression, come from what source it may."

They're either the stupidest twatwaffles in the world, or seriously scary dorks who need to be taken out.

There's nobody quite as ill-bred as Madam's Apple. She's in a class all by herself... mainly because nobody could stand to share anything with her. On January 6th, NBC will help Madam's sell books ( Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America).

Be proud while you can, NBC, because after seeing what's inside the covers (and in her case, under the covers with anything that moves... or doesn't), I have a sneaking suspicion you may see an abrupt drop in ratings:

• Coulter, discussing "Republican turncoats," remarks that "their gender always remains the same. They are women, not limited to the biological sense". [Page 114]
• Coulter claims that Obama, actress Halle Berry, and musician Alicia Keys "race bait[ed] their way to success":

• Coulter calls former White House press secretary Scott McClellan "retarded" after describing a fictional scene of "washed-up Republican functionaries like McClellan showing up in a basement office at NBC and announcing they want to be rewarded for snitching on a Republican". [Page 118]
• Coulter states that New York Times columnist Frank Rich "became qualified to comment on U.S. foreign policy, national security, and presidential politics after spending a childhood dancing his favorite numbers from Oklahoma! in his mother's panties". [Page 198]
• Coulter calls Newsweek contributing editor Eleanor Clift a "braying left-wing slattern". [Page 193]
• Coulter describes Code Pink co-founders Medea Benjamin and Jodie Evans as "storm troopers" and "satanic dervishes". [Pages 177-178, 179]
• Discussing former Virginia Sen. George Allen's calling S.R. Sidarth -- a volunteer who was videotaping Allen for James Webb, Allen's Democratic opponent in 2006 -- "macaca," Coulter refers to Sidarth and other campaign trackers as "little Nazi block-watchers". [Page 165]

See? That's what some publisher thought was worth reading. And hey, why not? What an opportunity to gather the family around, cozy up in your flanneliest flannels, let the kids stay up extra extra late, make some fudge, and read aloud to each other. Why, you could all take turns! Think of it as "edu-tainment"!

And how nice for Coulter that she has a platform on national television.

Madam's Apple (emphasis on "mad") is nothing more than a used suppository in the shriveled, most uncivilized, vulgar recesses of the literary world.

She and her agent should thank their lucky stars there's still a First Amendment.

Another Rev. Rick Warren post: Democrats need period of pyschological adjustment from Bush years

Paddy and I were just saying how sick we are of all things Rev. Rick, and how the the issue of the separation of church and state should be front and center. But here I am, posting one more time about Rev. Bigot. Why?

Because Marc Ambinder offers up another facet of the controversy that I found interesting. He titles it "The Left Adapts to Power; Overcoming Learned Pessimism". He begins by referring to a "knee jerk reaction" by many liberals to what they have for so long seen as a slap in the face:

The contrast, though, between the impressively (from that point of view) liberal administration appointments that obama has been rolling out over the past few days and the choice of an anti-gay pastor to speak briefly for one morning (and presumably not about gays, or any other divisive social issue) is fascinating. [...]

The Obama team probably misread the situation a bit, but it's easy to see how they might do so: the transition team obviously wanted two contrasting religious voices for the invocation and the benediction. Seen in this light, the Warren pick is far less controversial.

The deeper dynamic, though, is this: liberal groups are used to being treated like stepchildren in Washington. They are used to being under siege at all times, and it's going to take some adjustment to realize that gay rights are probably not in danger because of things like the Warren pick. (An Obama adviser, discussing this matter with me, urged patience, saying that Obama is committed to the substance of his campaign promises to expand gay rights.)

A little private reassurance would go a long way, and it seems that the Obama team has not accounted for the fact that everyone, on all sides, is going through a period of psychological adjustment from the Bush years.

This includes liberal interest groups accustomed to being slapped around by Bush and taken for granted by Bill Clinton.

When new programs start coming down the pike, and Obama's priorities on gay rights (and on anything else on the progressive agenda) become clear, most of this early defensive posturing will probably be seen as premature and overblown.

Until Barack Obama does something substantial to advance gay rights, groups like HRC can hardly be blamed for feeling the deja vu.

While I appreciate Ambinder's points, I think it goes far beyond that. Rev. Rick is downright offensive, to say the least. Receiving eventual reassurances by Obama and his policies is one thing, but having that bigot right smack in our faces on such a monumental occasion is something else entirely.

In other words, this can't be boiled down to the eventual adaptation of learned behavior by the abused following a lifetime with their abuser.

And unfortunately, I don't think disappointed Obama supporters will feel soothed by dreams of a rosier future while simultaneously playing "polite audience" to a man who dismisses our most basic rights and needs the way a horse's tail idly swats away a fly.

For so many who have felt the intense pain that comes from small-minded hatred and prejudice, the time for healing is now, not January 21st.

Blago 2? Evidence suggests Norm Coleman solicited monetary favors

Move over, Rod Blah-Blah-Blagejovich, you may have company. Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease:

Did Norm Coleman's financial problems compel him to turn to friends and GOP donors for help with his living situation?

That's what a new story out of Minnesota alleges. Friday morning, a local Fox News affiliate reported that at the time that Coleman alleged received $75,000 in unreported payments from a prominent Republican businessman, he was also struggling to make payments for the restructuring of his home.

Good government officials wondered whether there was something more than coincidental to the financial exchange. And, indeed, there is other compelling -- and up to this point, unnoted -- evidence to suggest that Coleman was soliciting monetary favors from his GOP backers.

Around the same time that Coleman and/or his wife were allegedly receiving three $25,000 payments from businessman Nasser Kazeminy, the Senator was also getting cheaply discounted rent from a major Republican figure who served as his landlord in Washington D.C.

Maybe Normy and Uncle Teddy Stevens could become roomies!

Indeed, in two separate lawsuits that emerged this fall, it is alleged that, around this time, the Colemans (one of the Senate's least rich families) were in financial straits. According to one of the lawsuits in March of 2007, Kazeminy said that "U.S. Senators don't make s---" and that he was going to try to funnel money to the Minnesota Republican. From there, it is alleged, Kazeminy arranged for the three $25,000 payments to be made from his Texas-based Deep Marine Technology to Hays Companies in Minnesota for "insurance." Laurie Coleman is, officially, an employee at Hays. But she is not a licensed insurance agent.

Records provided by the Coleman campaign to the local Fox affiliate show that, during the same month that Kazeminy made his profanity-laced statement about Coleman's financial situation, the Senator refinanced his home.

Al Franken is having a good day.

Campbell Brown's double standard

On CNN right now, Campbell Brown is ripping into Barack Obama for bantering with a reporter today when he was asked about his previous remarks about Hillary Clinton during the primary election. Here's the exchange:

QUESTION: Thank you, Mr. President-elect.

You’ve talked about the importance just now of having different voices and robust debate within your administration. But, again, going back to the campaign, you were asked and talked about the qualifications of the — your now, your nominee for secretary of state. And you belittled her travels around the word, equating it to having teas with foreign leaders. And your new White House council said that her resume was grossly exaggerated when it came to foreign policy. I’m wondering whether you can talk about the evolution of your views of her credentials since the spring.

OBAMA: Well, I mean, I think — this is fun for the press to try to stir up whatever quotes were generated during the course of the campaign. No, I understand. And you’re having fun.

But the — and there’s nothing wrong with that. I’m not — I’m not faulting it. But, look, I think if you look at the statements that Hillary Clinton and I have made outside of the heat of a campaign, we share a view that America has to be safe and secure. And in order to do that…

OBAMA: … the statements that Hillary Clinton and I have made outside of the heat of a campaign, we share a view that America has to be safe and secure. And in order to do that we have to combine military power with strength and diplomacy. And we have to build and forge stronger alliances around the world so that we’re not carrying the burdens and these challenges by ourselves.

I believe that there is no more effective advocate than Hillary Clinton for that well-rounded view of how we advance American interests. She has served on the Armed Services Committee in the Senate. She’s knows world leaders around the world. I have it extensive discussions with her both pre-election and post-election about the strategic opportunities that exist out there to strengthen American’s posture in the world.

And I think she is going to be an outstanding secretary of state. And if I didn’t believe that, I wouldn’t have offered her the job. And if she didn’t believe that I was equipped to lead this nation in such a difficult time, she would not have accepted.

Campbell "no bull, no bias" (oh, puh-leeze) Brown accused Obama of being flip, avoiding "a legitimate question", and playing games with the press. Whether she's right or wrong about his obligation to answer that particular question, I don't seem to remember her ever ranting about that in regard to the Bush administration, who virtually spit in the faces of anyone daring to ask so much as one "legitimate" question, let alone a follow-up. Nor would (or could) Bush make even a minimal attempt to give an honest, or coherent, response.

If evasive, nasty little retorts were middle fingers, Bush managed to blatantly flip off the press on a regular basis... if and when he held any press conferences.

Maybe Mrs. Dan Senor should have had the same set of standards, and intestinal fortitude, to face off with the current president before lashing out at the future one.

Mark Halperin on biggest media failure in the past 7 years - “It was extreme bias, extreme pro-Obama coverage.”

What a serious dumbass. What John says-

If there was a journalist out there who you wanted to talk to about media bias, would you start with Mark Halperin? Listening to Mark Halperin discuss media bias is like listening to Michael Brown opine on the benefits of good disaster relief. Halperin, you will remember, is the deep thinker who informed us all that McCain’s inability to explain how many houses he owned was… bad news for team Obama.

Was Howard Kurtz unavailable for comment? What about Brent Bozell? And really, being insufficiently hostile to Obama was the media’s biggest failure the past seven years? Really?

"Thirsting for liberty and armed only with roses in hand, citizens throughout Georgia peacefully staked claim to their God-given right of liberty," Bush said in the statement, referring to a wave of massive anti-government protests in 2003. "These demonstrations proved once again, that when given a choice, people choose to live in freedom." [...]

The remarks come at a time of heightened tension between Washington and Moscow in the wake of Russia's August invasion of Georgia in a dispute over the breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Facing a runoff election in a few weeks — and recently hit with a subpoena to testify about his ties to the sugar company whose refinery exploded in February, killing 14 — the Georgia Republican has turned his frustration on the media, giving a light shove to a cameraman yesterday who appears to get to close to the embattled senator.

The Democrats are hoping to make the subpoena (not to mention the shove) an issue in Chambliss’s Dec. 2 runoff against Democratic challenger Jim Martin — which, by the way, can’t come quickly enough.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Iraq withdrawal agreement

Stop me if you've heard this one before. Okay, see, there was this fraudulent war that turned into an illegal occupation. No, no it gets better. There were this guy named Obama who was against this cosmic roto rooter into our collective psyches, but he got ridiculed by this bunch of thugs we'll call BushCo and Friends. In fact, a lot of us got laughs for the same thing, by a bunch of pseudo-patriots. Are ya with me so far? Good.

Okay, so here's the set-up for the punch line. See, after five years and over 4,000 deaths, finally... finally... there was an agreement. You remember the one: between Iraq and the U.S. The one that gets us out of there by 2011, the one that stops our family members from getting their heads blown off. Yeah, yeah, that's the one.

Well, a crazy thing happened. Oh, this'll knock your socks off. What a freakin' riot. In fact, my stomach hurts already, but not from laughing, because, see, this is no joke:

“Shiite legislators could barely conceal their delight” at the agreement, and noted that “they referred to the pact as the ‘withdrawal agreement.’” As proof of its determination to a firm withdrawal date, the Iraqi government even required that the U.S. “scrap the language that would have allowed the American troops to stay beyond 2011 if Iraq requested.”

Iraqi officials made it perfectly clear that they would take the withdrawal agreement seriously:

– Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh: “The total withdrawal will be completed by December 31, 2011. This is not governed by circumstances on the ground.”

– Deputy parliament speaker Khalid al-Attiya: The “Americans have responded positively on two important amendments. The first one is the Americans should withdraw from cities and suburbs on June 30, 2009, and the second one is that Americans should leave Iraq in 2011.‘”

What a set-up, huh? Abbott couldn't have set up Costello any better. Trouble is, there's no payoff. No punch line. The joke's on us.

The Pentagon, however, seems to view things differently. Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen said today that he still supports “conditions-based” withdrawal only, and indicated that the agreement could always change long before 2011.

You really killed 'em with that one, Mullen.

Dennis Miller's on a roll here. He humiliates himself on national television, again. With Billo, again. In a mere 46 seconds, he manages to reduce his already degraded image to that of a used gym towel. This irrelevant excuse for a talking head obviously has some unresolved personal issues.

I've got news for Formerly Funny Dennis: The last thing I consider upon being exposed to the stunted emotional development of Sarah Palin is what she does with Bobsled Todd in the little spare time they share behind closed doors:

She’s a great dame. People are fascinated by her because the Left hate her. I think the Left hate her — mostly women on the Left hate her — because to me from outside in it appears that she has a great sex life, all right? Barone: Media trashed Palin because ‘she did not abort her Down syndrome baby.’

Let's review: Being pro-choice is not being pro-death, pro-abortion, or pro-stupid. You want pro-stupid? Here's your pro-stupid:

Speaking before a roomful of academics in Chicago yesterday, U.S. News and World Report’s Michael Barone claimed that “the liberal media attacked” Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) during the presidential campaign because “she did not abort her Down syndrome baby.” “They wanted her to kill that child. … I’m talking about my media colleagues with whom I’ve worked for 35 years,” Barone said. Politico reports that “[a]bout 500 people were in the room, and some walked out.” Barone did not dispute his remarks, saying he “was attempting to be humorous and, as many in public do, went over the line.”

I missed the "humor". It went, woooooo!, right over my head. Imagine that. Me. A comedy writer, being too dense to get the joke.

For the record: Nobody in my world faulted Palin for choosing--choosing-- to keep her baby.

Now, schlepping it around the campaign trail as if he were a rag doll prop was a little disconcerting. But choosing to bring Trig into the world was absolutely fine with my liberal gang-o'-pro-choicers.

UPDATE via Mudflats, in response to CB's protest about accusations that she banned books:

So, you see, she didn’t ban books…she just tried to fire a librarian who wouldn’t censor them. If someone is offended at the prospect of book banning, the “real” story certainly won’t make them feel any better.

On to Harry Potter. The reference to Palin wanting to ban Harry Potter came from an anonymous email. I got this email 3 or 4 times. There was no source cited, just a long list of “controversial” books that Palin supposedly wanted banned, including not only the first five Harry Potter books (two of which weren’t even written at the time), but Lady Chatterly’s Lover, James and the Giant Peach, and everything by Judy Blume. Not one serious news organization printed this. So when Sarah Palin whines about bad journalism, and the media not living up to their responsibility, and when she says “it was reported,” the reporters she’s talking about are simply people who forward controversial emails without knowing if they’re true.

So what books did she want removed from shelves? One that we know about is the book Pastor, I’m Gay by the Rev. Howard Bess. I had the pleasure of meeting Rev. Bess, and heard the story from his own mouth. It was also reported by David Talbot of Salon.

After she became mayor of Wasilla, according to Bess, Sarah Palin tried to get rid of his book from the local library. Palin now denies that she wanted to censor library books, but Bess insists that his book was on a “hit list” targeted by Palin. “I’m as certain of that as I am that I’m sitting here. This is a small town, we all know each other. People in city government have confirmed to me what Sarah was trying to do.”

What about the other books on Palin’s “hit list”? We may never know, but does it really matter? What if she supported banning some books and not others? The point is, we shouldn’t be banning any of them. Free speech doesn’t work if it’s only the free speech the mayor of Wasilla agrees with. Once you seek to ban one book, you’ve already lost the Constitutional high ground.

2012 Palin: "I'll plow right through that door"

As Stephanie Miller so aptly put it this morning, Palin is my comedy binky. No matter how hard I try, I jest cain't quit her:

As Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin heads to Florida to attend the Republican Governors Association annual conference in Miami, she says she'd consider a run for the White House in 2012 or beyond. [...]

"Don't let me miss the open door. Show me where the open door is and even if it's cracked up a little bit, maybe I'll just plow right on through that and maybe prematurely plow through it, but don't let me miss an open door. And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door," Palin said in an interview with Fox News Monday.

Let's play Compare and Contrast: CB Palin (I think I may now refer to her as CB Palin [Comedy Binky]. Why, it's not unlike putting lipstick on a binky!) plows right through things. PE Obama is deliberate and thoughtful. CB lost. PE Obama won.

Just keep plowin', CB... right through the mud that you create. And don't forget to close that open door on your way out.

That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did. When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."

"A bit crazy and off base"? More like rubber room material, Paul "screw loose" Broun. Forget "crawling out of the woodwork". More like, crawling out from under a rock.

Last Friday night, right-wing radio host Lars Larson played a spoof “Barney Frank for President” advertisement that ended by referring to Rep. Frank (D-MA), who is gay, with a derogatory term:

Summary: Radio host Lars Larson played a spoof "Barney Frank for President" advertisement, in which a person said: "Now remember, this Erection Day -- Election Day, vote for Barney Frank for President. I'm Barney Fag -- uh, Frank and I approve this massage -- message."

Larson also baselessly suggested that Frank allowed his relationship in the 1990s with a Fannie Mae official to improperly influence his conduct as a member of the House Financial Services Committee.
