Former Rep. Joe DioGuardi (R-N.Y.) has decided to challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), according to the Associated Press. [...]
DioGuardi was first elected in 1984 and defeated by Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) in 1988. His former district just north of New York City is solidly Democratic.

On Thursday, President-elect Obama will hold his fourth press conference in four days. He's expected to announce his appointment of Mary Schapiro as head of the SEC. It's scheduled for 10:45 am ET.Biased Brown does it again. Campbell "No Bias, No Bull" Senor is so in the tank for the GOP, it's to the point where she doesn't even try to hide it any more. (That was for all you trolls out there who froth on about "liberal media bias!!" Which universe do you inhabit?)
NBC News notes that in 11 press conferences so far, Obama has taken 48 questions.

Jon Favreau, future White House director of speechwriting, has so far been at a loss for words over Facebook pictures of him at a recent party.Pictures of Favreau, 27, at a recent party appeared on Facebook Friday. In one of the photos, Favreau, who served as President-elect Barack Obama’s chief speechwriter during the campaign season, was dancing with a life-sized cardboard cut-out of future secretary of state Hillary Clinton. In a second photo, a friend was offering the cutout a bottle of beer while Favreau stood beside the likeness with his hand on the cardboard New York senator’s chest.
The picture was reportedly up for a scant two hours or so before Favreau removed it, along with every other picture of himself beyond his profile photo — but there’s no getting the Facebook genie back in the bottle.
Yes, it was disrespectful and distasteful. Yes, Favreau apologized. And Campbell Brown, being all "no biasy and no bully", was incredulous yesterday when Hillary accepted the apology and brushed it off:
The Clinton camp reaction? "Sen. Clinton is pleased to learn of Jon's obvious interest in the State Department, and is currently reviewing his application," Clinton aide Philippe Reines told the Washington Post.
Doesn't Hillary know that she's not supposed to be gracious/avoid another embarrassing news cycle? Doesn't Hillary realize that she's expected to exhibit any outrage she might feel about this publicly? Doesn't Hillary understand that Campbell Brown needs a juicy story to boost her ratings? The nerve.

Campbell "no bull, no bias" (oh, puh-leeze) Brown accused Obama of being flip, avoiding "a legitimate question", and playing games with the press. Whether she's right or wrong about his obligation to answer that particular question, I don't seem to remember her ever ranting about that in regard to the Bush administration, who virtually spit in the faces of anyone daring to ask so much as one "legitimate" question, let alone a follow-up. Nor would (or could) Bush make even a minimal attempt to give an honest, or coherent, response.QUESTION: Thank you, Mr. President-elect.
You’ve talked about the importance just now of having different voices and robust debate within your administration. But, again, going back to the campaign, you were asked and talked about the qualifications of the — your now, your nominee for secretary of state. And you belittled her travels around the word, equating it to having teas with foreign leaders. And your new White House council said that her resume was grossly exaggerated when it came to foreign policy. I’m wondering whether you can talk about the evolution of your views of her credentials since the spring.

And I think she is going to be an outstanding secretary of state. And if I didn’t believe that, I wouldn’t have offered her the job. And if she didn’t believe that I was equipped to lead this nation in such a difficult time, she would not have accepted.

CNN's Campbell "No Bias, No Bull" [sic] Brown is ubiquitous. She seems to pop up hourly on the Tee Vee Machine. Right now, Wolf Blitzer is calling on her to share her unbiased Mrs. Dan Senor wisdom with us. Let's see how wise she really is:
She's calling Obama a hyprocrite. It's all about lobbyists working in his White House, 15 of them, she says, and/or family members of lobbyists. They are very knowledgeable, so of course they'd be hired, she says, but it also makes him a promise-breaker.There you have it: the unbiased, unbulled sagacity of Campbell Brown.
Now she says there's a real absence of leadership. Bush is an idiot, and Obama is being deferential to the idiot. So who's in charge? Paulson? This puts the pressure on Obama to be more vocal, sooner than later.
Sweetness. Via.
"Tonight I call on the McCain campaign to stop treating Sarah Palin like she is a delicate flower that will wilt at any moment," said Brown. "This woman is from Alaska from crying out loud. By treating Sarah Palin different from the other candidates in this race, you are not showing her the respect she deserves. Free Sarah Palin. Free her from the chauvinistic chain you are binding her with. Sexism in this campaign must come to an end. Sarah Palin has just as much a right to be a real candidate in this race as the men do. So let her act like one."

Reaction has been swift and -- aside from the blogosphere and some newspaper columnists -- notably mild.There. And they didn't even feel the need to use exclamation points.
"We're willing to work through this period," said Richard Parker, president of the liberal Americans for Democratic Action, one of the party's most enduring advocacy groups. In the long run, he said, the organization's "serious concerns" about Obama are far outweighed by its disagreements with Republican John McCain.
Gerald Austin, a veteran Democratic strategist, put it more succinctly: "When I hear people complaining . . . I tell them I have one thing to say: 'President John McCain. Three Supreme Court appointments.' That's all I need to say."
