David Gregory: 'People Can Fact-Check Meet the Press Every Week on Their Own Terms'

Gregory's reaction and what he does plan to change encapsulates exactly what is wrong with Sunday tv. You'd think NBC would strive for better than the rest. According to this vid, seems maybe Gregory isn't all that worried about fact checking.

First came an announcement by ABC's This Week interim moderator Jake Tapper that the program would team each week with the St. Petersburg Times' PolitiFact to fact-check guest interviews.

Now, NBC's Meet the Press moderator David Gregory tells The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz that fact-checking is an "interesting idea" but that his program will not follow ABC's lead. "People can fact-check Meet the Press every week on their own terms."

The fact-checking concept was originally proposed by NYU journalism professor Jay Rosen in December. "Nice!" Rosen tweeted yesterday in response to Gregory's quotes. "David Gregory probably thought this exercise was pointless," he continued in another tweet. "Viewers of Face the Nation [sic] can do it themselves, right David?"

Also in Kurtz's column is news that Meet the Press will debut a new set on May 2. "The look is ultramodern," Kurtz writes. "Floor-to-ceiling bookcases, a pair of huge video screens with a White House backdrop, a small, circular glass table as well as a larger, rectangular one."

When Bush was in office, there the media and GOP were, cheer leading from the sidelines, rarely challenging the BushCo spokesbots, screaming patriotism at the top of their lungs... at the expense of democracy. After all, one should support one's president in a time of war.

Now Obama is in office. Here the media and the GOP are, resisting, challenging, insinuating, accusing, demonizing. Maybe someone should prop them up in front of a reel of reruns from 2001-2008, and then have the balls to confront them, and force them to answer honestly and thoroughly... if that were even possible.

Rachel Maddow was so superior to the others on today's Meet the Press panel, it was, well, embarrassing... for them. She is so well prepared, and so knowledgeable, has such clarity and is so focused, while those with her seem to flail in comparison.

My feeling is that the main reason they put her on was to increase ratings. And now, David Gregory interviews her here, which serves as a double promo op, one for each show.

It's good to hear her talk in more than quick gulps as she had to on Meet the Press. Enjoy:

ABC's "This Week" Tops MTP For First Time In 10 Years

Need anymore evidence that you suck there Gregory?

For the first time since June 27th, 1999, ABC's "This Week" drew more Total Viewers and A25-54 demo viewers than NBC's "Meet The Press," the longest running show in television history. The ratings win for "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" marks the first time in over ten years that the program scored first in both categories during regular coverage. The closest ABC had come was in August 2007, when "This Week" scored first in the demo, but tied "MTP" in Total Viewers.

May I Just Say

that the "tough questioning" by Dave Gregory of David Axelrod as to whether or not President Obama has sufficiently memorialized the passing of Michael Jackson just proves what an astute and probing journalist Gregory is.

Carlos Watson Gets 11am Slot on MSNBC

Very glad to see, even if Carlos went to Ransom (ptooey). They don't mention, but I'm pretty sure Shuster is sticking around in the 3p-5p slot, with Tamryn Hall.

First on TVNewser: Carlos Watson, who officially joined MSNBC as a dayside anchor in March, will be the host of the 11amET hour. His first day was today.

The move continues to fill in the gaps on MSNBC dayside ahead of the June 29 move to HD and addition of programs at 9amET and NoonET.

Initially, it was reported David Gregory would anchor one day a week at 11amET. Norah O'Donnell was also slated for a morning hour. She told TVNewser in April: "I look forward to my new hour in the mornings!"

Now it appears the morning line-up is set, with Dylan Ratigan anchoring 9-11am and Dr. Nancy Snyderman at Noon.

Hmmm, looking over the line up, I have to admit this is a pretty young leaning bunch with Snyderman by far the oldest at 59. Very good. Added- Oops, almost forgot about Andrea "Can't Read A Teleprompter After 30 Years" Mitchell who is well into her 80's.

V.P. Joe was interviewed by Not Tim Russert on Meet the Press. One question referred to this quote about ::dun dun dunnn:: The Deadliest Dick:

Two interesting moments came towards the end of Joe Biden's big interview on Sunday, in which the vice president first declined to deny his ambitions to be president, and later fell into a brief laughing fit when asked to assess the state of the Republican Party. [Laffy Note: "Laughing fit"? More like a chuckle or two]

Sitting down with "Meet the Press," Biden was pressed by host David Gregory to play political prognosticator with the GOP. After a hearty chuckle and a Cheshire cat grin, the vice president noted that history has a way of bringing even the most fractious minority party back into relevancy.

"I just know there's a ferocious debate -- there appears to be ferocious debate within the Republican Party and what they're going to look like in the future," said Biden. "I was elected in 1972 as a 29-year-old kid. My party went through the exact same thing. I ran with George McGovern. He got clobbered nationally. I barely won here. For the next two and a half to four years we were in a very intense debate of the future of the party. I think it's predictable. I think the Republican Party will come out of this, I think they'll come back. They'll be strong again. The pendulum swings."

I just finished watching David Gregory's Meet the Press interview of Vice President Biden, and I have to agree with Paddy: Belligerent much? That said:

Patrick Gavin: "This weekend marks the one year anniversary of when Meet the Press host and NBC Washington Bureau Chief Tim Russert passed away -- and, by most measures, a natural successor to his vaunted position in both journalism and the nation's heart has yet to emerge."

David, we watched Tim Russert: We knew Tim Russert; Tim Russert was a friend of ours. David, you're no Tim Russert.*

*For the record, I was never what you'd call a Russert groupie, but when it comes to good Tee Vee and thoughtful interviews, Gregory doesn't even come close.

Why they ever chose David Gregory when they could have snagged say, Karl Rove or Brit Hume, I'll never know. Kidding. I'm kidding:

According to Huffington Post, NBC's Meet the Press suffered its lowest ratings since David Gregory became moderator last week.

Meet the Press averaged 2.97 million total viewers for the May 10 broadcast, as compared to 2.74 million for CBS' Face the Nation and 2.62 million for ABC's This Week.

File this under D for Duh.

David Gregory To Anchor Weekly MSNBC Show

Jeebus christo, just what the hell MSNBC needs, another wussy white guy who isn't David Shuster. They hire Carlos Watson and then delegate him to anchor desking, they throw out that Shuster is getting an afternoon show, then put up Ratigan and Gregory first. WTF?

In an interview with the Baltimore Sun's David Zurawick, NBC's David Gregory confirmed what has been buzzed about for a few days - that he'll be hosting a one-hour weekday show on MSNBC.

When asked for specifics on the heightened MSNBC presence, Gregory said, "What I'm going to try to do is appear where I'll be anchoring an hour once a week at this stage, because I want to be a presence on all of our platforms. And our cable operation MSNBC is terrific....We haven't worked out the details, but the thinking is we'll try to do it Wednesdays at 11 a.m."

From TVNewser: Meet the Press with David Gregory was the most-watched Sunday morning public affairs program for March 1, in Total Viewers and the A25-54 demo. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates was a guest on the show.

That one was not good for me. And I won't respect Gregory in the morning.

Sunday Morning Yak Fest Ratings Tighten

Alternative headline- David Gregory Sucks. One thing that stands out to me (other than Gregory sucking) is that it seems as if Snufflupagus's show has tried to mix it up with talking heads, even one show actually having a panel consisting completely of talkers under the age of 50. Really, how many times can you listen to Cokie Roberts, George Will, Little Tommy Friedman et al without being able to predict what the next sentence will be?

NBC had its lowest rated Meet the Press since David Gregory took over as moderator last Sunday, as ABC's This Week was the only broadcast to grow week-to-week in Total Viewers.

Meet the Press dropped below four million viewers, in part due to the lower coverage (96%) and irregular start times in some markets due to Super Bowl pre-game programming. Compared to the same week last year, This Week (3rd last week) cut the Total Viewer gap by 52%.
