Kill the Fil! Reid Has Killed Most Filibusters

By GottaLaff

No matter which graph you choose, no matter how you look at it, the GOP has set record filibuster numbers.

But wait! There's more! Harry Reid may very well set one of his own:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is on track to set the record for having the best batting average when it comes to killing filibusters.

The Rushpublics have "Kill the Bill". Well we have "Kill the Fil".

Kudos to Reid!

Hillary speaketh:

"The United States has no interest in occupying Afghanistan. We also have no intention of abandoning Afghanistan," she told the US-Islamic World forum in Doha.

"When international forces leave Afghanistan, our civilian presence will continue, so that we can foster a long-term partnership between Afghanistan, the United States, and other nations, that is based on shared responsibility for our common security," she added.

Whateth exactly doth that meaneth? Mayhaps there will no longer be a military presence when our troops cometh home (good!), but when will that be?

Hillary on 2nd term as Sec. of State: "I will be very happy to pass it on to someone else"

By GottaLaff

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/11/21/us/politics/21winter-clintonobama.jpg

So what exactly is she interested in?
SMILEY: Finally, there's already speculation about whether or not Secretary Clinton is going to do this for the full first time, and whether or not she has any interest if asked to stay on to do it for eight years? You see how tough the job is, can you imagine yourself doing all four years and, if asked, doing it for another four years?

CLINTON: No, I really can't. I mean, it is just...

SMILEY: No to what? All four or eight?

CLINTON: The whole, the whole eight, I mean, that that would be very challenging. But I, you know, I don't wanna make any predictions sitting here, I'm honored to serve, I serve at the pleasure of the President, but it's a, it's a 24/7 job, and I think at some point, I will be very happy to pass it on to someone else.

And she was not one bit interested in running for president again, either. So there.

Americans Most Admire Obama, Clinton and Palin

I really wish I could figure out what people admire in Palin. That she hunts? Has kids? Good taste in shoes? Just don't get it. Via Taegan-

President Obama is the man Americans admired most in 2009, a USA Today/Gallup Poll finds, while Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin are virtually tied as the most-admired woman.

"The close finish by Clinton, named by 16% in the open-ended survey, and Palin, named by 15%, reflects the nation's partisan divide. Clinton was cited by nearly 3 in 10 Democrats but only 6% of Republicans, Palin by a third of Republicans but less than 1% of Democrats."

Gallup: “Political Winners” Circle Filled by Figures Close to Obama

Looks like the GOP has been successful branding Pelosi as a "loser" considering that she has had a very good year politically.

PRINCETON, NJ -- In Americans' estimation, the top three political winners of 2009 are all women closely linked with the Obama administration: Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Sonia Sotomayor. Among these, Michelle Obama has the broadest support with 73% calling her a "winner" in U.S. politics this year and 21% a "loser." However, Clinton's rating is nearly as positive.

President Barack Obama, himself, also falls in the political winners circle, although the percentage calling him a political loser is somewhat higher than is seen for the three women.

The picture is quite different for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whom half of all Americans identify as a political loser. More than half say the same of Rep. Joe Wilson (the representative who yelled "You lie!" to Obama at a joint session of Congress), as well as Gov. Mark Sanford (who is losing his wife and is under a state ethics investigation over an admitted extramarital affair), White House party crashers Tareq and Michaele Salahi, and the Republicans in Congress generally.

State Department Still Unsure of Its Role One Year Later

By GottaLaff

I have a very smart friend, Allen McDuffee, who also happens to be extremely nice and a good writer. He has a new post up at Truthout. I'll share a little of it with you, and then you can read the whole thing here:

One year after Obama takes office and appoints Hillary Clinton secretary of state, the State Department struggles to determine whether it really wants to separate from the Pentagon.

At a December 3 closed briefing to a group of foreign policy journalists from the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism on the concept of "smart power" under the Obama administration, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said that the Obama administration was taking "a more holistic approach to national affairs." [...]

Citing the Obama administration's mantra of the Three D's: Defense, Diplomacy and Development, Kelly said that implementing "smart power is a rebalancing of our foreign policy." Smart power - a concept that combines the hard power of the military with the soft power of diplomacy - has gained increasing acceptance in foreign policy and military circles as a reaction to right size the Bush administration's heavily militaristic policies.

Yet, while insisting on the smart power model as the right model for the United States, the State Department is still struggling with its relationship to the Pentagon, how it will "reimagine itself" and, ultimately, how hard and soft power will work together in practice.

It's the thought that counts.

Chelsea Clinton to marry

I'm sure this won't turn into a media circus...

Chelsea Clinton is engaged to her longtime boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky, a spokesman for former President Clinton confirmed to ABC News.

(snip)

Mezvinsky works at Goldman Sachs; his parents are both former members of Congress. His father pleaded guilty in 2002 to swindling dozens of investors out of $10 million after getting caught up in a Nigerian scam. Interestingly, his mother lost her seat in a conservative congressional district after one term in part because she chose to vote for President Clinton's health care reform.

AUDIO: Dennis Miller calls Newsweek Palin cover "sexist", then slams Hillary Clinton

By GottaLaff

Remember when Dennis Miller was funny?

Miller said it was 9/11 that changed him. Did it make him sexist too?
But Miller’s hypocritical comments and Palin’s lack of concern with them, give weight to those who argue that Palin and her conservative followers have a selective perception of social bias.
And the media will give them both a pass on this.

Hillary Clinton Now More Popular Than Obama

Taegan's got that right, but it won't hit the cablers until Drudge leads them to it.

Gallup: "Hillary Clinton lost the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination to Barack Obama, but in one respect she now ranks ahead of Obama. The president's current favorable rating of 56% is down 22 percentage points since January. Over the same time span, Clinton's favorable rating has changed little, and now, at 62%, it exceeds Obama's."

Sure, it's a meaningless poll, but expect it to be the talk of cable news channels today.

Wow. Self-consciously "Aren't we witty" delivery much?

Hillary Clinton moved to halt disclosure of CIA torture evidence, court told

By GottaLaff

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2009/7/29/1248898740470/Binyam-Mohamed-001.jpg
Binyam Mohamed, an Ethiopian, was granted refugee status in Britain in 1994. He was detained in Pakistan in 2002 on suspicion of involvement in terrorism and then "rendered" to Morocco and Afghanistan. Photograph: PA Wire/PA

Time after time, CIA abuse/torture has nullified, or at least seriously challenged the credibility of, prosecution cases against detainees. When testimony has been coerced, when a suspect has been tortured into saying anything and everything he thinks his abusers want to hear, the evidence is inadmissible.

Oh, and torture is illegal, despite the efforts of John Yoo, David Addington, et al. to twist and stretch the law into something unrecognizable to most Americans. The CIA has been frantically playing CYA as more and more revelations have made their way into the public eye.

Now Hillary Clinton has chimed in:
Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, personally intervened to suppress evidence of CIA collusion in the torture of a British resident, the high court heard today.

The dramatic turn emerged as lawyers for Binyam Mohamed, the UK resident abused in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Morocco and Guantánamo Bay, joined by lawyers for the Guardian and other media groups, asked the court to order the disclosure of CIA material.

It consists of a seven-paragraph summary of what the CIA knew, and what it told MI5 and MI6, about the treatment of Mohamed. Lord Justice Thomas and Mr Justice Lloyd Jones, the judges hearing the case, have said that the summary contains nothing that could possibly be described as "highly sensitive classified US intelligence".

However, David Miliband, the foreign secretary, has repeatedly told the court that the US would stop sharing intelligence with the UK if the CIA material was published. The judges, as well as lawyers for Mohamed and the media, have challenged that assertion. [...]

In a written statement proposing a gagging order, Miliband told the court that she "indicated" that the disclosure of CIA evidence "would affect intelligence sharing". Pressed repeatedly by the judges on the claim yesterday, Karen Steyn, Miliband's counsel, insisted that Clinton was indeed saying that if the seven-paragraph summary of CIA material was disclosed, the US would "reassess" its intelligence relationship with the UK, a move that "would put lives at risk".

Guy Vassall-Adams, for the Guardian and other media groups, told the court earlier that Miliband's claims – including his account of his conversation with Clinton – "lack any credibility". [...]

A letter recently sent by the CIA to the high court "merely demonstrated that the CIA would like the court to withhold from the public … findings about CIA wrongdoing", [ Lord Justice Thomas] added.

The CIA letter was couched in vague language and Miliband's interpretation of the US claims was completely unreasonable, lawyers for Mohamed and the media said.

The court was also provided with a 35-page MI5 document – of which all but three are blacked out – relating to its instructions to one of its officers in 2002. [...]

It is unclear why so many pages in the MI5 document have been redacted, but the information contained in them may relate to Mohamed's condition and how he should be interrogated. One unredacted passage refers to Mohamed as "The Dirty Bomber" a reference to claims about him which were dropped years later after he was secretly flown to Guantánamo Bay. The high court judges, who have described the case as "troublesome", reserved their ruling on whether the CIA material should be published.
