RNC fires finance director & deputy director following spending scandals

By GottaLaff

Heads are rolling... because, hey, that's how the RNC, well, rolls:

The Republican National Committee has fired Finance Director Rob Bickhart in the wake of a two embarrassing scandals that originated in the committee's fundraising department.

Deputy Finance Director Debbie LeHardy has also been removed from her post.

Remember that powerpoint presentation to Republican donors that stooped to the usual fear tactics, calling Obama a socialist, blahblah spewspew? That would be the same powerpoint in which they referred to GOP donors as "ego-driven". Bickhart was reportedly the one behind it.

Poll-itics: Reaction to the word "Socialism" edition

By GottaLaff

This is fascinating:

“Socialism” is a negative for most Americans, but certainly not all Americans. “Capitalism” is regarded positively by a majority of the public, though it is a thin majority. There are certain segments of the public – notably, young people and Democrats – where both “isms” are rated about equally. And while most Americans have a negative reaction to the word “militia,” the term is viewed more positively by Republican men than most other groups.

Republican men poll more positively on the word "militia". Why does this not surprise me? I wish they'd polled Tea Baggers separately.

The Pew Research Center breaks it down in a lot more detail. Take a look.

Quote-O'-The-Day- "What's to the left of socialists" edition

By GottaLaff

The question isn't whether Steve King is an idiot. It becomes what's to the far far right of idiots:

"The question isn't whether the president is a socialist. It becomes what's to the left of socialists."

-- Rep. Steve King (R-IA), quoted by the Iowa Independent.

TARP repayments averaging 8.5 percent profit for United States

Funny how we've gotten so deeply into Socialism that we're coming out the other end right smack dab in the middle of Capitalism.

The Treasury Department is booking an 8.5 percent profit on investments in bailed out banks, according to a new survey.

American Express and Goldman Sachs ranked among the top five most profitable investments for taxpayers, according to SNL Financial, a market research firm that released the survey.

(snip)

The Treasury Department said Friday the government had been repaid $181 billion from the program, and predicted that the bailout would be a net profit to taxpayers. The profits stem from early repayments, stock sales, dividends and warrants issued under the bailout.

Here are the five most profitable returns, according to SNL:

1. Centra Financial Holdings - 26.2 percent

2. First ULB Corp - 26 percent

3. American Express - 23.3 percent

4. Goldman Sachs - 20 percent

5. First Manitowoc Bancorp - 19.5 percent

VIDEO: Hate Obama? There's a sign for that. Plus, death threats for Congress members.

By GottaLaff

Rather than do several posts on the level of hate in this country these days, one will be enough. A veritable combo plate of vile spew and threatening words.

Have yourself a heaping pot of hostility stew (click on image to enlarge):

An anonymous conservative group has set up a website where, for $2,500 to $3,500, Obama haters can grab a billboard adorned with a cartoon image of Obama’s face and a vitriolic message.

How nice of them to share their "personal" feelings.

So far, the nameless head of the group says their Web site has received more than 1,800 hits and that contributions that go toward paying for the billboards.

Add a dash of death threats to the hostility stew:

U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-Dearborn) says in the aftermath of passing health care reform, he and members of his staff have been getting death threats so serious, he has contacted the FBI.

They’ve been very nasty," the 83-year-old congressman tells The Monroe Evening News.

Not sure I've ever heard of a death threat that isn't nasty. Hence, stir carefully.

And now, add an extra splash of extremist nutcase letters:

Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter is among state leaders across the country receiving threatening letters from an extremist group. [...]

As of Wednesday, more than 30 governors had received letters saying if they don't leave office within three days they will be removed, according to an internal intelligence note by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

Allowing to simmer for several days, weeks, or months calls for a warning: Do not bring to a boil.

That could end in a disaster.

Utah County parents protest schools' promotion of 'democracy'

By GottaLaff

The D word! Oh noes! Kids, cover your ears! Adults, watch your mouths!

Some Utah County parents are calling on the Alpine School District to stop spreading "false educational ideas." First and foremost, the parents say, the district needs to clamp down on its use of the D-word: "democracy."

Why... sputter, sputter... How. Dare. They? Words like d... de... de-e-m-m o... democracy (whew! I barely got that out, it was made of such nasty dirty filthy wrong) should be banned! Redacted! Removed from dictionaries!

Why, why... that's a gateway word!! Next thing you know, an innocent child may slip and morph right into big f***ing deal!

Yes, it's actually come to this:

This week, a spokeswoman for Utah's Republic, a group that advocates for a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, asked the Alpine Board of Education to scrap its democracy-centered mission statement. [...]

But this nation is a republic, not a democracy, said Oak Norton, a Highland father of five and the founder of Utah's Republic. The Constitution guarantees every state a "republican form of government." "Karl Marx said, 'Democracy is the road to socialism,' " Norton said. A true democracy, he said, relies solely on majority rule and inevitably devolves into anarchy, which then sprouts socialist dictators.

That's commie Marxist gay abortionist French fascist socialist Jewish Muslim dictators to you, Elm.

Sorry... Oak.

But never fear, the board stands by its language. Good. We'd hate for a guy named after a tree to dictate anything to a place of education.

The Alpine board:

"We chose 'our democracy' to reflect both a government with power vested in the people and our freedoms. We not only recognize that our government is a republic, but we value and participate in this form of government with an elected Board of Education," the statement said. "The use of the word democracy underscores the type of republic found in the United States."

Gee, ya think?

You can read more about the end of the United States as we know it here.

VIDEO- Tea party leaders: We'd ‘absolutely’ abolish Social Security.

By GottaLaff

Yesterday I posted a video of a Hardball segment in which Dana Loesch over talked Melissa Harris Lacewell, using the word "succession" instead of "secession", blahblahblah, the usual. She apparently made the rounds, popping up on Larry King Live last night, too:

Dana Loesch, a tea party organizer from Missouri, and another tea party organizer, Wayne Allyn Root, joined King for the discussion.

Get rid of that evil socialistic Social Security, you evil socialists!

And while we're at it, do away with public libraries, fire departments, national parks, the post office, public schools, Medicare, the U.S. military, veterans' benefits, U.S. currency, etc.

Anyone with a brain knows it's way better to have, as Thom Hartmann just called it, "economic feudalism". ::fist pump::

In fact, Thom suggests the Tea Tantrumers and other anti-government types go here and sign up, if they dare:

Unfortunately, King did not discuss the billionaire-backers of the tea parties, like David Koch, who similarly wants to do away with Social Security.

No, only Rachel Maddow would think to do that, and it's doubtful Loesch or Root would consider being confronted by someone who knows how to challenge them. Not for one second.

Scary New GOP Poll: "He may be the Antichrist."

By GottaLaff

BS Top - Avlon Harris Poll
Nicholas Kamm, AFP/ Getty Images

Get a load of this. And it is a load:

To anyone who thinks the end of the health-care vote means a return to civility, wake up.

Obama Derangement Syndrome—pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism—has infected the Republican Party. Here's new data to prove it:

  • 67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist.
  • 57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim
  • 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president"
  • 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did"
  • Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama "may be the Antichrist."

And 100% of rational, thinking, reasonable people think these people need to get an education, get acquainted with reality, and get some therapy. And for godsake, stop making inappropriate, offensive Hitler references.

This poll is the latest and most detailed evidence of the extent to which Wingnuts are hijacking our politics. It should be a wakeup call to all Americans and a collective reminder, as we move past health-care reform, that we need to stand up to extremism.

John Avlon's new book Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America is available now by Beast Books both on the Web and in paperback. He is also the author of Independent Nation: How Centrists Can Change American Politics. Previously, he served as chief speechwriter for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and was a columnist and associate editor for The New York Sun.

This is downright scary and very sad. It has to end, and we need to do much more to counter it.

Please go read the whole thing here.

VIDEO- Rep. Devin Nunes: "Say no to socialism, totalitarianism"

By GottaLaff

Democrats "will finally lay the cornerstone of their Socialist utopia on the backs of the American people." Really?

One can only hope...

The more support President Obama and Democratic policies get, the loonier the Rushpublics get:

"For most of the 20th century people fled the ghosts of communist dictators. And now you are bringing the ghosts back into this chamber."

Now they believe in ghosts. Commie ones!

And it goes without saying that the big bad Muslim ACORN Census Marxist Terrorist is out to get them.

Wow.

Quote of the Day

Yeah yeah, scary socialists, we know. Via Taegan-

"The way that it was presented as some kind of marketing ploy, I don't like that, but I think there's real substance here. I mean you don't have to put a name on it, but I think it's gone far beyond anything that's liberal."

-- Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times, defending the recently leaked RNC fundraising presentation that claimed President Obama was taking the country towards socialism.

VIDEO: Sarah the Socialist

By GottaLaff

Great catch by our pals over at The Mudflats:

Mystik

From the Mystik Lubricant website:

Mystik is an exclusive engine oil sponsor for the 2010 Iron Dog Snowmobile Race and a sponsor of Team #22 Scott Davis and Todd Palin – past Iron Dog Champions.
"So what?" I hear some of you mumbling. "Big deal," I detect from afar. "Now what goofy name is Laffy gonna come up with for Sarah Palin?" I suspect you may be thinking.

Here's the big deal:

It turns out that Mystik Lubricants is owned by… wait for it … Citgo. Yes, that same Citgo that’s owned by Venezuela. Socialist Venezuela. Socialist, Hugo Chavez lovin’, Venezuela.

See? It was worth wading through that rinkydink ad just to witness Lubey McHypocrite step in it one more time.

Republicans Will Run on Fear of Obama and Socialism

By GottaLaff

Why would they stop their fear tactics now? And once and for all, I wish they'd get out their dictionaries and look up the word "socialism".

While they're at it, they might look up the words "ethical" and "democracy":

The RNC plans to raise money this election cycle through an aggressive campaign capitalizing on "fear" of President Obama and a promise to "save the country from trending toward socialism," Politico reports.

"The strategy was detailed in a confidential party fundraising presentation which also outlines how 'ego-driven' wealthy donors can be tapped with offers of access and 'tchochkes.'"

And by "tchochkes" they mean apologies for calling them "ego-driven".

I'm so glad I'm a Marxist Commie fascist so they can't lump me in with all those evil socialist types.

Dick Durbin: "If you think it's a socialist plot..."

By GottaLaff

We're all socialists now!

"If you think it's a socialist plot, then please drop out of the federal employees health program."

-- Sen.Richard Durbin (D-IL), to Republican lawmakers at today's health care reform summit.

Anyone see any dropouts? No?

I didn't think so.

VIDEO- GOP Senate candidate: Obama is not a citizen, "socialist tendencies", Palin equally qualified

By GottaLaff

The perfect candidate... if you're a Birther.

Dr. Wargotz is the presumptive Republican nominee to challenge Barbara Mikulski for her Maryland Senate seat:

At CPAC last week, blogger-activist Mike Stark caught up with Dr. Eric Wargotz, one of Maryland’s Republican candidates for U.S. Senate.

Should Obama be impeached? "Not at this point."

Socialist? He has "socialist tendencies."

Is he a U.S. Citizen? "No, I do not believe he was born in the United States."

Is Palin more qualified than Obama: "Let's put it this way, I don't think she's less qualified."

Oh, and he's a Tenther.

Whatever happened to normal?

Sarah Palin is booted from speech at a Canadian hospital

By GottaLaff

We knew this was coming, did we not? Barbie McLipSchmutz was scheduled to speak at a socialist-- er, public-- abortion-providing, advanced directive-servicing (gasp! death panels!) hospital. But that wasn't going to stop her, nosirreebob! Not when there was $200K at stake!

Let's get real. There was no way one of the two wouldn't eventually quit the other:

Now, the Toronto Sun reports that Palin has “been given the boot” and will no longer appear at the fundraiser for St. Peter’s hospital. Jeff Valletine, the vice president of communications for Hamilton Health Sciences, said that he had received a backlash for inviting Palin.
No more $200 grand? That explains her recycled Hawaiian resort wardrobe. No wonder she quit that trip, too. Also.

Sarah Palin to Speak at a Socialist Canadian Hospital

By GottaLaff

This is quite the big deal for someone who said that Canada should really think about reforming its health care system (video from post above), and who's not the biggest fan of abortion rights, and who thinks "death panels" will kill your Grandma. Me oh my.

Hyp. O. Crite:

According to the Hamilton Spectator, Sarah Palin has been contracted to speak at a fundraiser for the Juravinski Cancer Centre and St. Peter’s Hospital in Canada.
Oopsie daisy there, Barbie McLipSchmutz, I do believe you're exposing yourself to the dreaded H1Socialism1:

St. Peter’s Hospital is a public hospital within the national Canadian healthcare system. In Palin’s worldview, universal, government-insured health care is “socialism.”

St. Peter’s Hospital performs abortions. Palin, a staunch anti-choice zealot, has protested outside of abortion clinics and has refused to denounce abortion clinic bombers as terrorists.

St. Peter’s Hospital, through its Centre for Studies in Aging, offers “advanced directives.” Palin tried to derail health reform earlier this year by falsely labeling advanced directive reimbursements as “death panels.”

Oh dear. This will never do.

I feel a "quit" coming on....

As Barbie said, "Keep the faith".

VIDEO- Sen. DeMint: "This is a socialist agenda, plain and simple, demanding control."

By GottaLaff

Gaaaa! Stop the evil socialist commie Marxist fascist liberal progressive hippies before they control the whole wide world!

I'm sorry, what's that coming through my non-existent socialist earpiece? It's too late?... just ask Greece? I don't understand. That must be some kind of ultra super duper double whammy secret lefty code:

Via Taegan:

"Liberal doesn't even touch it. This is a socialist agenda, plain and simple, demanding control. So we've got to stop them."

-- Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), in an interview over the weekend, on the Obama administration.
We've got to stop us!

VIDEO: Boehner Admits Obama Is Not A Socialist

By GottaLaff

Initially, when I saw The Boehner say this on the Tee Vee Machine, I was hopping up and down, all a-dither and a-gog at the apparent gotcha:

Of course, all my a-ditherage and a-gogitude was tempered by The Boehner's little tap dancery implication, "Hey, I'm not the one who said it, I won't call him that. I'm simply the bizarrely bronzed, orange-faced good cop, but hey, if Michael Steele wants to lie, it's fine by me."

And then there's this little nugget:

Boehner is lying. He has said that what Obama and Democratic leaders are doing is socialism. From his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference a few months ago:

Well, the stimulus, the omnibus, the budget — it’s all one big down payment on a new American socialist experiment. … All of these bills seek to replace our economic freedom with the whims and mandates of politicians and bureaucrats.

Basically, Boehner admitted today that all he was doing there was fear-mongering and attempting to scare the public for political gain.

Today on CNN’s State of the Union, Obama responded to these charges from conservative leaders, stating, “You know, I’m amused. I can’t tell you how many foreign leaders who are heads of center-right governments say to me, I don’t understand why people would call you socialist, in my country, you’d be considered a conservative.”

Glenn Beck's '9-12' logo based on communist, socialist designs

By GottaLaff

Well now, this is awkward:

But do Beck; the corporate-sponsored astro-turf group, FreedomWorks, headed by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas); the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights; the private-property group, the National Assn. of Rural Landowners; and the rest of the march sponsors know the symbol's origins?

Unity and resistance are what the fist represented in 1917, when it was first employed by the Industrial Workers of the World, a union organization founded by socialists. And in the 1940s, when it stood for various nations' communist party organizations.

That's also what it meant when it was revived in the 1960s, appearing as a symbol for the SDS, as well as anti-war and feminist movements. It was the basis for the black-power salute given by John Carlos and Tommie Smith at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. And today, it's the symbol for the Progressive Labor Party (pictured), a political outfit whose website says it "fights to smash capitalism."

Turnout for the 9-12 Project's Saturday march on Washington was a bust; 30,000 protesters signed up in advance (MSNBC reporter David Shuster tweeted that D.C. park police called that figure "generous"). But even if three times that many actually showed up, the number would fall far short of the hundreds of thousands (and even millions) claimed to be planning to attend.

So much embarrassment, so little time.

Even in that reduced crowd, however, surely someone recognized how odd the right-wing gathering's left-wing logo was.

Next thing you know, they'll acquire this one, too:

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s41/matthewian/Other/male-symbol.gif

One can only hope.

UPDATE: David Shuster listens... again.
