John Edwards on This Week

By GottaLaff

George Stephanopolopolopolus interviews John Edwards:

Edwards: There are real differences between McCain and Obama on taxes. There will be a tax cut for the middle class, which is way more than McCain is doing. McCain is Bush, but more so. Obama wants to lift people out of poverty, allow the middle class to do better. McCain's tax cuts are for corporate America, including the biggest oil companies.

Steph: Those could end up enhancing economic growth.

Edwards: Wrong: One, Obama proposes ways to pay for his cuts, not so for McCain. That's the foundation for long term economic growth. Two, Bush's war on work, favors wealth over work. Obama's saying, we should treat hard work with dignity and respect. More breaks for the corporations, even more than Bush's, doesn't work. You don't need me to tell you that. They've had 8 years to try it their way!

Steph: Even Obama says the tax increases for the wealthy could restrict growth and would be willing to delay them.

Edwards: It's his judgment, not mine to make. But the way to sustain growth is to strengthen the middle class. That's the foundation for growth. In America today, the growth is tilted to the top 1%. The middle class is economically stressed, which impedes growth. Time for something different.

Steph: Supreme Court decision on habeas corpus... Fred Thompson agrees with McCain that it's an error.

Edwards: I disagree with both of them. At first McCain had a muted response, then came out strongly against it. The Court said we will apply the Constitution to those detained at Gitmo. It's hard to go around the world and promote American values when we hold people at Gitmo with no hearings, held for years. They're entitled to hearings, to a determination if they should be held or not. And, it's in the long term security interest of America.

Steph: You've ruled out running for v.p.? Is that a Shermanesque statement?

Edwards: This is not what I'm seeking. It's Obama's decision, and has great choices available to him. I'd take anything he asked me to think about seriously, but it's not a job that I'm seeking.
