Did John McCain "Borrow" His "Cross In The Sand" Story?

I report, you decide. Transcript from the forum last night here.

It just sounded so fake and so contrived, so I did a little research about it. Someone on here said it sounded like a scene from Ben-Hur, so I did a google search about Ben-Hur and cross in the sand and such. No dice. But I searched around a little bit more and here is what I found. A story about Alexander Solzhenitsyn from his times in the Soviet Gulags.

(snip)

As he waited, head down, he felt a presence. Slowly he looked up and saw a skinny old prisoner squat down beside him. The man said nothing. Instead, he used a stick to trace in the dirt the sign of the Cross. The man then got back up and returned to his work.

As Solzhenitsyn stared at the Cross drawn in the dirt his entire perspective changed. He knew he was only one man against the all-powerful Soviet empire. Yet he knew there was something greater than the evil he saw in the prison camp, something greater than the Soviet Union. He knew that hope for all people was represented by that simple Cross. Through the power of the Cross, anything was possible.

Excerpted from "The Gulag Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, three volumes published 1973–1978.

Padlock! YOu are doing a GREAT job! I was already well into drinking mode when I checked in last night, and couldn't believe what a sham the Forum was. McCain was clearly prepped and well-memorized, My Friend

The entire thing made me livid.

This "story" of his looks plagiarized to me. When I get home, I'll talk to you more.

Excellent post. Excellent comments. I miss being with you guys.

Huh. That sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it? McCain made a Christmas ad about his "cross in the sand moment," and I believe the ad said it happened at Christmas time. Can you find that ad? I'm just curious b/c he left that part TOTALLY out last night.

Adrienne said...

Yup, I found it--this supposedly happened at Christmas time. Clearly, he revises this story to get the cross in the sand moment into just about all of his discussions.

Okay, Duh...I have the worst headache. You, of course, have that ad/story at the top of the post. I need something stronger for this headache...Where's Cindy when you really need her?

I think I'll go draw a cross in the dirt outside my house now just to see what happens or so that I too can tell a cross in the dirt story when I need to.

I'm sure that his experience as a POW was interesting enough, so it seems rather strange that McCain would want to 'embellish' them like this.

If this had happened to a Democrat, the Corsi's of the world would write whole books questioning whether the man had even spent time in a POW camp, let alone North Vietnam. I'm not sure how hard we should be on him (especially on this), but clearly, the media should trust him less and question him more.

Yes, he also said it happened at Christmas time last night. How'd I miss that? I guess I should just nap or something...

Paddy, it's seems a bit ironic that you would comment on McCain's retelling of the Solzhenitsyn incident as his own, when you've apparently read someone else's blog post and passed it off here as your own. A diary, which includes the content you used here was posted 45 minutes before yours. See http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/17/122230/161/239/569299

Anon, check out the links at the beginning of Ms. Paddy's post. The DK blog is one of them. That's hardly something that's "passed off here as [her] own." That's more than adequate attribution.

Anon, you owe Paddy an apology. We all make mistakes so own up to this one and make nice.

I had no idea that McCain was such a fan of Solzhenitsyn's writing. Hmmm.

It didn't occur to me to follow the "you decide" link. You must admit, that when preceded by "I report" one would think that the words below were supposed to be the blogger's own. I think it would be better if Paddy said "I just read this on DailyKos..." or something to that effect.

Anon, don't be a jackass. If it didn't occur to you to check a fucking link, then perhaps you should stick to the god damned TV for your informational needs. There, everything is done for you, nice and neat like.

If you think it should be done differently, then start your own fucking blog. But please, let us know about it, because I'd love to be first in line in informing you how you're stupid and do everything wrong.

LOL, I'm sure it could have been clearer, but it wasn't so whatever. I'll take Anon's comment as constructive criticism and leave it at that.

Clancy said...

Oh, Paddy, you're so much nicer than I am. Besides, we know you're holding the fort down all by your lonesome this weekend. That, and you had that hot date with a purpose driven douchbag last night.

Paddy said...

No, I had a hot date with a vodka bottle and had to take a nap this afternoon, that's my problem. Getting old, can't drown my sorrows like I used to.

Clancy said...

The whole bottle? I'm surprised your nap didn't last longer.

There are a lot of suspicious details in McCain's recouting of his POW experiences.

Do a search for Diane Van Rensaleer, wife of a POW who chronicles McCain's stonewalling of POW hearings amongst other things.

Did McCain crack the "cone of silence"? - Most of his answers were very short and he was quick to reference personal life experiences - seemed to basically 'address' the audience and avoided looking at Pator Rick Warren in the face?
He even at one point asked pastor Warren if he was going to ask him about the Supreme Court Judges, etc? What an incredible "sixth" sense? BTW, "The path of a LIAR is short" African proverd!!!

McCain cracked the 'cone of silence' prior to the Leadership and Compassion Forum!!!!

Solzenitzen is dead. Therefore McCain is allowed to crib all that author's works and pass them off as his own.

If someone is dead, then everyone is allowed to steal their old work; much like vultures are allowed to pick flesh from a corpse. That's uhm...capitalism.

The worst thing about the Vietnamese people is that they didn't torture John McCain to death when they had the chance. We would all be safer, richer and happier today if they had.

What did you expect for someone who is in the early stages of dementia and seniliy? The only real difference bewteen Bush and McSame is 10 years.

Can there possibly be ANYONE with any of those anti-U.S. Viet Cong propaganda videos?

I could single-handedly destroy his nomination.
