The Obama channel

Do I really need to say it? Okay, okay- BFCE!!!

Channel 73 on the Dish Network is now The Obama Channel.

Obama's media buying strategy has been marked by a willingness to work the angles, and to try to pick up a few votes at the margins. The decision to go to everything from extensive radio buys to odd-hour infomercials reflects the fact that the campaign media buyers spend a lot of time thinking about how much persuasion any given dollar can buy, and given a very cheap format -- late night cable channels that need filler, for instance -- will settle for a thimblefull of persuasion.

The satellite channel is the latest of these marginal gambits: Three readers from different parts of the country email that Channel 073-00 on the Dish Network is now labeled OBAMA. ("What is up with Sen. Obama having his own channel?" asks a St. Louis reader.) The channel plays his two-minute ad laying out his economic plan on a loop, over and over.

(snip)

The channel's appearance has provoked scorn and alarm on conservative blogs, though, and some discussion on a forum for Satellite TV aficionados, where one user writes that a Dish Network executive emailed to reassure the user that it "is paid advertising by the Obama campaign and is not an endorsement of Senator Obama by DISH Network" and will broadcast through November 4.

It's perfectly fair and is actually pretty old practice in the satellite TV business. Shepherd's Chapel has been renting its own satellite transponder since the mid-1980's.

One quarrel (among many others) I have with this bailout/rescue/whatever bill is that it doesn't bring back regulations, which is what got us in this mess in the first place.

Sorry that this doesn't pertain to the post... i just didn't want to post further down.

PPP (D) is coming out with a poll from Michigan tomorrow. It's going to look good for Obama! Just a heads up :)

And here I was about to cancel my Dish Network service and go with Time-warner cable. Silly me.

Like my little sister said "He doesn't think outside the box because he was never in a box to begin with."

Out of the mouths of babes.

She is 13 by the way

Unfortunately, I won't be able to get the Obama Channel. In all honesty, though, that's probably a very fortunate thing for my kids.

Tim, the bailout bill is a complete mess...I've been reading it, and it seems downright crazy in many places. I feel your pain...

Such a great story on Crooks & Liars about the W.Virginian coalminers who shut down the mine for Obama. Read it!

But I get DirecTV--why can't he buy time on there?

SMART... VERY SMART DISH NETWORK! ;-)

Dish Network sales aren't as strong as DirectV, so what better way to BOOST your customer base than to feature an OBAMA TV CHANNEL!!!

If you decide to switch, new customers will have to sign a contract for at least one year!

Hey, if it helps keep Free Speech TV, Link, Colours and a few other such channels on DISH, I welcome it.

To Tim Weiss--

Regulations must be done right-- and hopefully done right the first time. It took us years to get into this mess economically, but we can regulate in less time, but not in a few weeks. We need to think through how this will be done-- and I very much want Senator Obama leading the regulation proposals anyway.

This bail-out is just a tourniquet to prevent bleeding. The comprehensive regulations will most likely wait until after a new President is inaugurated-- and I am doing my best to make certain that new President is Senator Obama, the only candidate who has always believed in regulations (in March 2008 when Merrill fell Senator McCain said he was fundamentally a deregulator and spoke out against even Sec. Paulson's modest proposals to regulate).

I have Dish. During a commercial break during last night's post-debate coverage I saw an ad for Obama. In upper right corner, there's the Dish prompt "press 'select' for more info" I pressed it, and bam.... I am taken to a shortened version of the bio video shown and the Dem convention. after that, another ad, and then another... you can stay as long as you like and learn about Barack. All the while, there is the "Paid advertisement" logo in the bottom corner. Very cool.
