VIDEO- McCain Ad: Hayworth the Birther Wants to Stop Alien Invasion

By GottaLaff

How mavericky of J Sid to put out an ad like thi-- Oh wait. Sorry, just a sec. I'm hearing something through my imaginary earpiece.

What's that? He's not a maverick any more?

So what's worse? Someone who looks like a flip-floppy liar, or someone who looks like a Tea Tantruming loon?

This year's political ad spending hits $1 billion. Think of where that $ could go...

By GottaLaff

http://blogs.dailymail.com/donsurber/files/2009/11/billion_dollars.jpg

One. Billion. Dollars. And senators are screaming about how to spend our money? Here's an idea: Not on political campaigns:
In an interview with Media Life, Evan Tracey of TNS Media Intelligence says spending on political advertising will hit $1 billion this year, with two thirds of that going to issue ads.

The forecast for 2010: "Next year spending will spike with the continuation of the healthcare issue and heavier spending by Obama's political opponents, who will be looking to take advantage of his sagging approval ratings to sweep Republicans into office. Still, the recession may result in fewer campaign donations and smaller coffers than politicians have seen in years past."
Think of what that $1 billion could do. Think of the people it could feed, or the health care it could provide.

Now think of what our elected officials have done for (to) us after we donated that billion to them. Have we gotten our money's worth? Rhetorical.

Israeli political party jingle features duet of chairman and Obama

Everyone wants in on the act. If anyone stumbles across the audio or video of this, let me know.

Shas premiered a new jingle for its Internet campaign on Thursday that features a duet of party chairman Eli Yishai and US President-elect Barack Obama.

The party borrowed the music from the soundtrack of the hit Beverly Hills Cop movies of the 1980s for the jingle. The song was played in the movies whenever star Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley character took action. German musician Harold Faltermeyer won a Grammy award for the soundtrack.

In Shas's version of the song, Eli Yishai's voice is played saying the words Judaism and education in Hebrew, alternating with Obama uttering his slogan "Yes we can," which Shas copied for its campaign.

Shas spokesman Roy Lachmanovich said the jingle would most likely be used only for online ads and not for its television and radio commercials. He said Sephardim in Israel had much in common with African-Americans like Obama and Murphy.

VIDEO: One of McCain's Unaired Reverend Wright/Obama Attack Ads

By GottaLaff

Think back to my post of November 25th in which the McCain campaign claimed to show some restraint by not airing certain attack ads. They didn't want to, you know, go there.

Well, here's one of those ads:

Now ABC has gotten hold of this ad, which went through the final editing and production process before being nixed. A former campaign staffer gave the spot to the network.

Pity. They spent all that time and money on this piece of drek and nobody saw it... until now.

McCain campaign: 'Oh, we can't do that. That was playing the race card,'

By GottaLaff

It's hard to believe, but the McCain campaign tried to show some restraint in their anti-Obama ads. No, I'm not kidding:
In an extended interview with TIME, Davis detailed what might have been in the campaign ad war — and what self-censorship the McCain staff imposed on themselves regarding the issue of race.
Fred Davis III was the advertising whiz that John McCain has used for almost all of his campaign media:
...Davis is wistful at the missed opportunities of the McCain campaign. "I made a list once, which no one will ever see, of all the reasons that my hands were tied on this campaign," he says. "And I've never had a list this long." [...]

"One of the big hands that I felt was tied behind my back was [that] so many things — like [Obama's record on] crime — you would logically do were perceived as 'Oh, we can't do that. That was playing the race card,' " he says, adding that the campaign created a whole series of crime attacks against Obama that were never aired. "Reverend Wright? 'Oh, can't do that; they'll say we are playing the race card.' [William] Ayers? For the longest time, 'Oh, can't do that. We're playing the race card.'"
Yes, if there's one thing we know, it's that they never, ever played the race card.
The photographs of Obama that the ads used, for instance, which often showed Obama elongated and smiling, were carefully selected, he recalls. "We chose them with only one thing in mind, and that is to not make them bad pictures because bad pictures would be seen as racist," Davis says. "How many shots in their ads did they use a John McCain [photo] looking decent and smiling?" He says the campaign also agonized over the music in the ads, paying special care not to play drum-heavy tracks that could be seen as an African tribal reference. "We were held to a totally different standard," he says. [...]

Says Davis: "I never saw anybody play the race card but the Obama campaign."
How does he sleep at night?
[F]ormer Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander confronted him. "He basically wanted to know how I sleep at night."
I guess when you'd spent as much time with Gramm-pa McCain as Davis did, it would have been easy to doze off.

VIDEO: Coming to a network near you: Obama/Wright smear campaign

By GottaLaff

Via TPM:

Get ready:

The National Republican Trust PAC, which has been airing an ad attacking Barack Obama's association with Reverend Wright in three battleground states, has now put down for a national buy on five networks that will last from now through election day, a consultant with the group confirms to me. [...]

[T]he group just got through getting the spot vetted with network lawyers and is good to go.
I wouldn't exactly call it "good", but unfortunately, it's going, for the next 4 days.

This is all they have. This is what they do to try to win. These people are vile.

MUST WATCH VIDEO: Opie (and Fonzie) for Obama

By GottaLaff

See more Ron Howard videos at Funny or Die

I was close with the son of the man, Earle Hagen, who wrote the theme song for the Andy Griffith Show (it's playing in the background). I always felt oddly close to Ronnie Howard for that reason. Now I have a much better reason to feel that way.

Fun Fact: I do have a reason to feel "close" to Henry Winkler. Back when I was starting my acting career, I took a class from Jerry Paris, at which Henry was a guest speaker. Jerry, who was directing Happy Days, took a liking to me and gave me exclusive access to the Happy Days rehearsals (probably because I fawned over him, being that he directed/acted in The Dick Van Dyke Show, which I adored). Anyway, Henry was the only cast member to approach me. And by approach, I mean walk up to me, twirl my hair slowly with one finger, and ask me all about myself as I gazed into his Fonzie eyes in awe.

I barely survived. Pant, pant. Those were the (happy) days.

GOP pulling Bachmann ads

By GottaLaff

Not only did Michele McCarthy's Bachmann's appalling remarks make her Democratic opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg, over a million dollars, but check this out:

Two sources aware of ad buys in Minnesota say that the National Republican Congressional Committee is pulling its media purchases from Bachmann's race. If true, it is a remarkable fall for a congresswoman who, until recently, seemed relatively safe in her predominantly conservative district. The race had become closer in recent days -- the NRCC had transferred funds from Rep. Erik Paulsen (MN-03) to Bachmann a little over a week ago.

Suh-weet.
