David Gergen talks about anger at McCain Rally

More of the piece last night on AC 360. Script via John Cole.

GERGEN: This—I think one of the most striking things we’ve seen now in the last few day. We’ve seen it in a Palin rally. We saw it at the McCain rally today. And we saw it to a considerable degree during the rescue package legislation. There is this free floating sort of whipping around anger that could really lead to some violence. I think we’re not far from that.

COOPER: Really?

GERGEN: I think it’s so—well, I really worry when we get people—when you get the kind of rhetoric that you’re getting at these rallies now. I think it’s really imperative that the candidates try to calm people down. And that’s why I’ve argued not only because of the question of the ugliness of it.

David Gergen is a class act. I welcome his uncommon practice of unbiased commentary. I also echo his plea to the McCain/Palin ticket to calm their angry mob-style crowds down. There is no room in this campaign for unbridled rage and anger.

I think many high-level republicans are very disturbed by this. Many can remember political violence in this country. And those that do and those that don't remember it who have a sense of decency are appalled.

They also know this terrible behavior being incited by their candidates is another nail in the coffin of the republican party. This is causing more republicans to either vote for the democrats or just want to stay home.

What wv democrat said and eve is right too. I honestly don't understand what the McCain campaigns goal is in whipping up this emotion in his base.

Finally - and not a moment too soon.

David and other pundits need to beat this drum at EVERY possible occasion until some sort of SERIOUS move to deflate the anger is adopted by the McSame camp.

I pray it will work.

With the party of hate, and the poison the rethugs are spreading, I really have appreciated how gracious Michelle Obama has been on Larry King and the Daily show. I do fear for her and her lovely children, I hope they are protected well, Fox and the McCain campaign are doing their level best to stir up violence.

I understand what he's saying....but they need to stop this shit about how 'both' campaign are doing dirty deeds. No one can compare to the nastiness and hatefullness of the McCain's campaign and their rallies.

What you fricking libs don't understand is we have had enough of you. Years of basically calling bush Hitler, and all the assorted other goodies along the way. Guess what? You demonized the right, now you're crying because we're calling you on it.

Prepare. Because you have yet to see real anger.

And we are treated to an anonymous coward making threats. Feh.

Thank you for that, anonymous. Now, is there any significance in the way you have not given the current President the respect of an initial capital B? Do you agree that he is one of the minors, the minuses, the minuscules, the lower case, those deprived of the recognition of proper names?

Why has the cowardly numb-nut given up on running the country during his final months in office? Surely there's a difference between a lame-duck President and a wimp?

I sincerely hope you have not enjoyed your time on our forum. Remember, rage is no substitute for intelligence.

'Bye-ee!

(signed) your alter ego.
