President Obama gets super-secure Blackberry

By GottaLaff

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01118/obama_1118825a.jpg
Because this is so much more important than all those superficial little torture stories:
U.S. President Barack Obama will soon be receiving his long-sought, super-secure BlackBerry, sources told The Washington Times.
Long-sought. Who knew a Blackberry could be long-sought? In demand? Sure. Popular? No doubt. But long-sought? I'm dumbfounded.

Obama had been forced to give up his beloved but insufficiently secured BlackBerry after his inauguration and in the interim has been made to attach it to a cumbersome handheld device known as a Sectera Edge, supplied by the National Security Agency, the newspaper reported Thursday.

Omg, not the dreaded Sectera Edge! You can bet your bottom dollar that the Sectera Edge is not long-sought, believe you me. No way. No how. Not even close.

However, sources told the Times a sleek and ultra-secure new BlackBerry is on its way to Obama, who could be using it within a few months. The Times said it will use a software called SecureVoice, developed by Genesis Key Inc. of Washington.

Blackberry Anonymous just lost a valued participant. Prez O is hopelessly addicted. Let us pray.

Super-secret Vice Blackberry

By GottaLaff

See? Joe's cool, too:
President Obama isn't the only one pushing the White House legal and political limits on using technology. According to the New York Times, Vice President Biden also has "his own new super-secret BlackBerry."

Obama Keeps His Blackberry

Yeah!!! Party for the Pres!! I couldn't imagine having to do without the modern electronics.

Marc Ambinder reports President Obama will get to use a Blackberry -- with a new "super-encryption package" -- for "routine and personal messages" to his friends and family. However, "it's not clear whether he yet has the device."

"Discombobulated" President-elect Obama can't find his stuff + bonus George Carlin video!

By GottaLaff

George Carlin: "Stuff", from Comic Relief 1986

"Discombobulated" is the last word I'd associate with P.E. Obama:

Regarding Obama dropping his Blackberry, Gibbs joked that had it broken, that would have solved the Blackberry issue (of Obama wanting to keep the device). He also said the president-elect was a bit "discombobulated" by the move to Blair House and that he didn't know where all his stuff was.
Maybe Obama should use his Blackberry GPS to locate all his stuff.

Still E-ddicted: Obama says he'll fight to keep his BlackBerry

By GottaLaff

Photo
Some time ago, I had a lot of fun with P.E. Obama's addiction to his BlackBerry. Apparently, his flirtation with B.A. (BlackBerrys Anonymous) didn't take:
President-elect Barack Obama vowed a fight to the finish on Wednesday -- not over his economic plan, but to hang on to his BlackBerry. "They're going to pry it out of my hands," he told CBNC about his BlackBerry [...]

He is trying to avoid the fate of President George W. Bush, who gave up e-mail when he took power in 2001 because his lawyers determined any such electronic communications would have to be preserved for posterity as presidential documents.

There are also concerns that presidential electronic communications could be hacked into by the mischievous or the malevolent. [...]

Obama said keeping in touch by e-mail was a way of escaping the trappings of power and staying in touch with regular people. [...]

"I've got to look for every opportunity to do that -- ways that aren't scripted, ways that aren't controlled, ways where, you know, people aren't just complimenting you or standing up when you enter into a room, ways of staying grounded," he said.

As of now, he is hanging on to his BlackBerry.

"This is a concern, I should add, not just of Secret Service, but also lawyers. You know, this town's full of lawyers. I don't know if you've noticed," he said.

Now that I know he's receptive, I really should e-mail him and let him know how much I appreciated those remarks.

George Bush probably thinks BlackBerry is one of his stuffed Teddy bears that shares space with Woody the Cowboy on his bunk bed.

Fox 5 Buys Second Loaded Blackberry from McCain Campaign

By GottaLaff

Oh noes! Not another Big Oops! Imagine this kind of carelessness had ::shudder:: Gramm-pa been elected president and been responsible for the entire nation's security:
Personal information for a former Virginia Governor is one of more than 300 'contacts' listed inside a second Blackberry phone purchased by FOX 5 during a fire sale at the McCain-Palin headquarters this week. [...]

FOX 5 has bought a second phone from the McCain campaign which contains even more information: photos from the Republican Convention, a personal calendar for campaign events leading up to the campaign, and more than 260 'contacts' full of personal emails, phone numbers and addresses for McCain supporters.

Included in those numbers was the personal cell phone number for former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore.

FOX 5 called Gilmore on his cell phone.

“It makes me quite uncomfortable,” he says, because, “it’s a matter of principle. I gave that information to McCain headquarters and to have it sold is bothersome.”
"Bothersome"? As in, "Revelations of felonious behavior can be so 'bothersome', can't they..."? Or, "Affairs in public bathroom stalls are so 'bothersome', aren't they..."?

We’ve also started to receive emails from people claiming to have also purchased a Blackberry phones full of private campaign information. One man told us the info on his phone was “mind blowing.”

"Mind blowing"? As in Rod Blagojevich mind-blowing? Mark Foley mind-blowing? Richard Nixon mind-blowing? Choosing Also Palin as a running mate mind-blowing?

The McCain campaign told FOX 5, “It was an unfortunate staff error and procedures are being put in place to ensure all information is secure."

"Unfortunate staff error"? As in, "Oops! I hope they don't share those nuclear secrets..."? Or, "Oh great. Now I'll have to give up my coke habit..."?

“You don't know who got this information,” he says. “There's possible harassment. And there's an enormous amount of campaign intelligence that shouldn't be sold for such a low-value."
Now that's bothersome. The profit margin was way too low. Damn. Never mind that pesky recession. Better up the price next time.

Obama Trying to Keep His Blackberry

I can't even imagine trying to wean yourself off that kind of communication. Via Taegan-

An excerpt of the Barbara Walters interview with President-elect Obama to air tomorrow night on ABC News:
WALTERS: How are you going to get along without your Blackberry?

OBAMA: (Laughs). This is a problem. I, you know, one of the things that I'm going to have to work through is how to break through the isolation, the bubble that exists around the president. And I'm in the process of negotiating with the Secret Service, with lawyers, with White House staff.

WALTERS: You might have a Blackberry?

OBAMA: Well, I'm, I'm negotiating to figure out how can I get information from outside of the ten or 12 people who surround my office in the White House. Because, one of the worst things I think that could happen to a president is losing touch with what people are going through day to day.

For background: Why Obama has to give up email.

Obama's E-ddiction

By GottaLaff

[internet_addicts.gif]
Obama's hooked. Is there a Blackberries Anonymous in his future?

"Hi. I'm Barack and I'm an E-oholic."

Hi, Barack!
Sorry, Mr. President. Please surrender your BlackBerry.

Those are seven words President-elect Barack Obama is dreading but expecting to hear, friends and advisers say, when he takes office in 65 days.

For years, like legions of other professionals, Mr. Obama has been all but addicted to his BlackBerry. The device has rarely been far from his side — on most days, it was fastened to his belt — to provide a singular conduit to the outside world as the bubble around him grew tighter and tighter throughout his campaign.
I bet he says he can quit any time he wants to. They all do.
But before he arrives at the White House, he will probably be forced to sign off. In addition to concerns about e-mail security, he faces the Presidential Records Act, which puts his correspondence in the official record and ultimately up for public review, and the threat of subpoenas. A decision has not been made on whether he could become the first e-mailing president, but aides said that seemed doubtful.
I can see it now: He'll go cold turkey, because he's strong like that. He'll get the shakes... have cravings... suffer from extreme anxiety. And delirium tremens. One must never forget the DTs.

Maybe, just maybe, with proper medical treatment, some therapy, and a Blackberry patch, he'll have a successful recovery.

Oh no. He's already slipping:
Mr. Obama has not sent a farewell dispatch from the personal e-mail account he uses — he has not changed his address in years — but friends say the frequency of correspondence has diminished. In recent days, though, he has been seen typing his thoughts on transition matters and other items on his BlackBerry, bypassing, at least temporarily, the bureaucracy that is quickly encircling him.
You can do it, Barack! Will power!
Mr. Obama used e-mail to stay in constant touch with friends from the lonely confines of the road, often sending messages like “Sox!” when the Chicago White Sox won a game. He also relied on e-mail to keep abreast of the rapid whirl of events on a given campaign day.
He only goes for the pure stuff. He's hard core:
His messages to advisers and friends, they say, are generally crisp, properly spelled and free of symbols or emoticons.
How will he ever break the habit? Dealers are everywhere, ready to pounce:
He received a scaled-down list of news clippings, with his advisers wanting to keep him from reading blogs and news updates all day long, yet aides said he still seemed to hear about nearly everything in real time. A network of friends — some from college, others from Chicago and various chapters in his life — promised to keep him plugged in.
Even the strongest of us have weak moments:
Mr. Obama has, for at least brief moments, been forced offline. As he sat down with a small circle of advisers to prepare for debates with Senator John McCain, one rule was quickly established: No BlackBerrys. Mr. Axelrod ordered everyone to put their devices in the center of a table during work sessions. Mr. Obama, who was known to sneak a peek at his, was no exception.
It starts with sneaking a peek. Then right to typing a phrase. Then whole paragraphs... with punctuation. Before he knows it, Obama will have fallen right back into that deep, dark e-pit called Blackberrry Hell.

Maybe going into read-only mode will get him back on track? Not likely. He's a full-on junkie:
As his team prepares a final judgment on whether he can keep using e-mail, perhaps even in a read-only fashion, several authorities in presidential communication said they believed it was highly unlikely that he would be able to do so.
Tragic. So what's the answer? How will President Obama break free? Diana Owen, who leads the American Studies program at Georgetown University,, who has studied how presidents communicate in the Internet era:
“It’s a time burner. It might be easier for him to say, ‘I can’t be on e-mail.’ ”
Say it, Barack: "I can't be on e-mail." Say it, believe it, own it. Yes. You. Can.
