Liberalism, atheism linked to IQ

You know if I'm linking to it which way it leans. IQ leaneth for the Liberal.

(CNN) -- Political, religious and sexual behaviors may be reflections of intelligence, a new study finds.

Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs. This applied also to sexual exclusivity in men, but not in women. The findings will be published in the March 2010 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly.

As if that weren't fun enough, here's the bit that makes sense out of all those whacked fundies-

Religion, the current theory goes, did not help people survive or reproduce necessarily, but goes along the lines of helping people to be paranoid, Kanazawa said. Assuming that, for example, a noise in the distance is a signal of a threat helped early humans to prepare in case of danger.

"It helps life to be paranoid, and because humans are paranoid, they become more religious, and they see the hands of God everywhere," Kanazawa said.

Participants who said they were atheists had an average IQ of 103 in adolescence, while adults who said they were religious averaged 97, the study found. Atheism "allows someone to move forward and speculate on life without any concern for the dogmatic structure of a religion," Bailey said.

"Historically, anything that's new and different can be seen as a threat in terms of the religious beliefs; almost all religious systems are about permanence," he noted.

Liberal radio vs. conservative

Liberal radio will never succeed like conservative radio has because conservative radio is based on black-and-white opinions while liberal radio is all shades of gray ["Air America Ends on Mixed Message," by Steve Carney, Jan. 23].

People like to hear that two and two are four. They can't really take that two and two are sometimes four and sometimes 22, unless it is two squared.

So according to this person, conservative radio listeners find the following too difficult: Examining all sides of an issue, nuance, texture, introspection, challenging one's own party, complex analysis, open mindedness, inclusiveness, thinking outside the box, not marching in lockstep, critical thinking, sophistication, subtlety, detail, possibility, and substance.

This is what they understand: "No".

Got it.

Liberal activists not happy: Senators ‘bargained away heart of health reform’

Roll Call is subscription only, so all we get is a nibble... as if you couldn't fill in the rest:

Liberal groups that have bankrolled much of the media campaign defending the Democrats’ health reform efforts reacted angrily Wednesday to reports that Senate Democrats may ditch, or significantly shrink, a public insurance option to win over moderates.

One of two things will happen: Either their political donations will dry up, or the bill will yield better results than they anticipated, and everyone will kiss (or air hug) and make up.

Oh, did I forget number three? They'll harbor resentment no matter what happens and "unfriend" many a senator.

As I said earlier, I'm in wait-and-see mode, but cautiously optimistic. I did not like seeing the original robust public option go by the wayside, but if... if... the final bill achieves our goals in a different way, then I will let go of my initial disappointment and appreciate what we've accomplished.

We have already accomplished a great deal. Let's not forget that.

Senate Democrats break GOP judicial filibuster

It kills me how much of a moderate Judge Hamilton is. I can't imagine the hoopla that would have happened if the President had, ::gasp:: , nominated a liberal.

Washington (CNN) - Senate Democrats broke a GOP filibuster Tuesday against a district judge first nominated eight months ago by President Barack Obama for a seat on the federal appeals court.

The Senate voted 70-29 to end debate over the nomination of Indiana Judge David Hamilton, who was tapped by Obama in March to fill a vacancy on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Hamilton was Obama's first judicial nominee.

The full Senate is now expected to move forward quickly on a final vote on the nomination.

Hamilton's nomination cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee in June. Leading Republicans, however, then spent weeks preventing a final vote, arguing that Hamilton is too liberal.

Conservatives Remain Top Ideological Group

Oh sure, at the time we have elected the most openly liberal president in the history of the country, we're a more "conservative" nation? I'd like to see someone break down in these numbers with a few more pointed questions before I believe this tripe.

Gallup: "Conservatives continue to outnumber moderates and liberals in the American populace in 2009... Forty percent of Americans describe their political views as conservative, 36% as moderate, and 20% as liberal. This marks a shift from 2005 through 2008, when moderates were tied with conservatives as the most prevalent group."

"Changes among political independents appear to be the main reason the percentage of conservatives has increased nationally over the past year: the 35% of independents describing their views as conservative in 2009 is up from 29% in 2008."

Liberals confident that public healthcare option will happen

Think positive:

Hopes are running higher than ever for supporters of creating a government-run public option as part of healthcare reform.

It's what the American people want. Congress members represent the American people. Therefore, it should be what they want.... not what Big Insurance or Big Pharma want. Mmmkay? Stop being owned. That's an order.

The question is not settled and the healthcare reform project itself is far from guaranteed to succeed but liberals see mounting evidence that their position is going to prevail.

Liberals prevailing is such a nice mental image. I think I'll use it as my Happy Place today.

Supporters of the public option perceive a tide turning their way –and sweeping up previously reluctant Democrats. “I think people are sensing an inevitability that it’s going to be in the bill,” said Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). “There is momentum working here.” [...]

Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), has long cited an alliance with as many as 52 Democratic senators who support the public option. That number has grown, Harkin said Friday.

“I think that maybe three or four, five – somewhere in there – who were … a little bit skittish about that have become more inclined to support some sort of public option,” Harkin said. If Harkin’s assessment is correct, Reid would be as few as three senators shy of the 60 votes he needs to defeat a filibuster against the healthcare reform bill. “I firmly believe that we have 60 votes to proceed,” Harkin said. In addition to the poll numbers, Harkin credited a strong push by labor unions, a powerful Democratic constituency.

Hence, the motivation for Rushpublics to make every effort to destroy labor unions.

Obama supports the public option but will not rule out the trigger or any other compromise.

Repeat after me, Prez O: Trigger bad. Medicare for All good.

That is not good enough, Harkin said. “I’ve not been very happy with the White House’s lukewarm support of the public option,” he said, articulating a gripe liberals have been making for months.

“I would hope the president would speak out more forcefully in favor of the public option,” Brown said, adding “I expect he will.”

I expect he will, too. He's doing his "lay back until it's the right time to strike" thing. I just know he is.

Liberals Threaten to Strip Baucus of Chairmanship

Seems some of the liberal Dems might be finding their nervey bits. Chris has more on what they might be planning.

"In an apparent warning to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT), some liberal Democrats have suggested a secret-ballot vote every two years on whether or not to strip committee chairmen of their gavels," The Hill reports.

Baucus "has frustrated many of his liberal colleagues by negotiating for weeks with Republicans over health care reform without producing a bill or even much detail about the policies he is considering."

Said Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA): "Every two years the caucus could have a secret ballot on whether a chairman should continue, yes or no. If the 'no's win, he's out."

Studies: Conservatives easier to disgust

In other words, they're pussies.

Liberals and conservatives are often disgusted with one another. No surprise there.

But conservatives are literally the more easily disgusted of the two when it comes to such squeamish things as maggots, questionable toilet seats and the prospect of eating monkey meat. Such sensitivity, it seems, plays a role in their ideology and moral values.

Two joint studies released Friday from psychologists at Cornell, Harvard and Yale universities determined that conservatives are more fastidious about the creepier, smellier side of life reflective of a hard-wired instinct for safety and self-preservation.

Iceland official could become first openly gay PM

First AA President and now an openly gay Icelandic PM? What is the world coming to? Note the timeline- conservatives fug everything up, liberals take over and conservatives claim you have to rule conservatively to fix things that ruling conservatively fugged up. Hmmm.

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Iceland is set to appoint the world's first openly gay woman as interim prime minister — a former flight attendant who rose through the political ranks to become a cabinet minister.

Johanna Sigurdardottir, the island nation's 66-year-old social affairs minister, is the pick of the Social Democratic Alliance Party to lead an interm government.

Iceland's conservative-led government failed Monday, after the country's banks collapsed in the fall under the weight of huge debts amassed during years of rapid economic growth. The country's currency has plummeted, while inflation and unemployment are soaring.

Obama meets with liberal media

Nice. Didn't do it fast enough for The Nation, but I really like that Rachel was in the mix.

Obama held a meeting with several columnists and liberal commentators this morning, following up on last night's dinner with conservative writers, according to sources with knowledge of the meeting.

The group included the Washington Post's E.J. Dionne and Eugene Robinson, the Wall Street Journal's Gerry Seib, National Journal's Ron Brownstein, the New York Times Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd, The Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan, and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, among others.

Today's meeting was held at the transition headquarters, and lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes. All the participants sat a long conference table. Unlike dinner at Will's house, there weren't refreshments.

"It was a pretty intense back and forth about a lot of stuff," said one attendee, declining to get into specifics, since the meeting was off the record.

Poll-itics: Despite rumors to the contrary, liberals and Republicans confident in Obama edition

Just as a rumor about a lack of Obama support from the troops has gone mainstream, so has a similar one about liberal support. They're both dead wrong:

Gallup Poll Daily tracking finds support for Barack Obama among liberal Democrats holding steady at 93% despite news reports that his core supporters are disappointed with some of his cabinet appointments and other decisions. Meanwhile, in recent weeks, Obama's ratings have improved among conservative Republicans, up from 23% to 29%.

Get that? Nearly 1/3 of conservative Republicans have a better opinion of Obama, too.

More than 9 in 10 liberal Democrats have expressed confidence that Obama will make a good president since Gallup began tracking these opinions after the election last November. Moderate and conservative Democrats show nearly as high levels of confidence. [...]

Perhaps because his choices may signal a more politically moderate approach to governing, conservative, moderate, and liberal Republicans have become more confident in Obama's potential in recent weeks.

Now, a slim majority of moderate and liberal Republicans, 51%, say they are confident Obama will be a good president, up from 44% in November. Conservative Republicans remain largely skeptical of Obama's abilities, but in recent weeks his stock has risen slightly among this group, from 23% to 29%.
