Un-American: Special Comment by my 72-year-old friend

By GottaLaff

My impassioned 72-year-old Twitter pal, who goes by the name 42bkdodgr, would like to share his feelings about the Arizona "Papers Please" law and comparisons to Nazi Germany. I am more than happy to oblige.

But first, a personal note from 42bkdodgr:

Many of you may wonder why I chose to use the “ 72 year old friend” as the introduction to my Special Comments. I selected the moniker so readers could see that from my age and life experiences I give a different perspective to the issues of today.

Now for his Special Comment:

Un-American

Chris Matthews in his segment “Let Me Finish” on April 28, spoke about the use of such words as Nazism and Hitlerism by liberals and conservatives when objecting to laws and policies adopted by the federal or state governments they believe to be un-American.

One of the examples Chris used was the recent law enacted by Arizona relating to illegal immigrants. Chris stated that there is a big difference between what Arizona is trying to do-- preventing people from entering America illegally-- and what Hitler did, killing people who were trying to flee Germany.

There is one basic item that is the same in both policies.

The Arizona police may stop anyone for reasonable suspicion who they believe may be in the country illegally. That is the same tactic used by the Gestapo in Germany, by asking people for their papers, with no reasonable cause, only to see if they had proper identification papers to be where they were.

German citizens had to carry their identification papers with them at all times, which is the same requirement under the Arizona law for its citizens.

There are two other examples I believe come under Nazi type tactics.

A GOP congressional candidate proposes installing microchips on illegal immigrants. Doing something like that, would be a modern day version of Hitler requiring patches to be worn on clothing to identify those Germans who were Jewish, Communists, homosexuals or political opponents.

Then we have Duncan Hunter Jr., who stated at a tea party rally in California, that children born in the United States whose parents came to this country illegally should be deported.

In the 1930s, Hitler passed laws that natural born Jewish Germans weren’t considered citizens of Nazi Germany, and among other things, couldn’t hold public office, be a judge, a doctor or teach in the public school system or universities.

The scary part is Duncan Hunter favors deporting natural born citizens of the United States, even though promoting such a policy is in direct violation of the Amendment XIV of the U.S. Constitution.

Conservative Republicans, like Duncan Hunter, love to say the Constitution is the law of the land and it should be obeyed, but they sure like to tear it apart when it gets in the way of their ideology.

While the policies enacted and those being advocated are in no way as evil as those used in Nazi Germany, I just feel the basic foundation of those policies are the same used in Germany.

Many thanks again for another thorough, relevant piece, 42bkdodgr. You often say what many of us are thinking and feeling, and we thank you for your unique perspective.

Year to year MSNBC sees smallest decreases of any network in total viewers

Interesting. My guess would be that MSNBC has more loyal viewers.

MSNBC saw the smallest decreases of any network in total viewers. Year-to-year, MSNBC is down -6% in total viewers for both total day and primetime.

MSNBC was #3 in total day/demo viewers behind FNC and HLN. The channel was also #3 in total day/total viewers behind FNC and CNN. MSNBC topped CNN each hour between 6pm-12amET.

"Morning Joe" was the second most watched morning program in total viewers, but struggled in the demo averaging 115K, the fewest of the four.

(snip)

"The Ed Show" was one of the few cable news programs to grow in both total viewers (+25%) and demo viewers (+4%) year-to-year and was the number two program in its time slot. Also, the 5pmET "Hardball" topped "The Situation Room" for the first time in total viewers.

Both "Countdown" and "The Rachel Maddow Show" were down in the demo year-to-year, but Maddow's program did grow slightly (+2%) in total viewers. For the first time since 2000, MSNBC, which airs a replay of "Countdown," topped CNN at 10pmET in total viewers. MSNBC was also #2 in total viewers at 11pmET, which hasn't happened since Maddow's show premiered in 2008.

Though Olbermann's program saw year-to-year decreases (-13% total viewers/-30% demo), 8pmET "Countdown" moved back into the cable news top 10, finishing 10th among cable news programs in total viewers. "Maddow" was #11.

Dear Chris Matthews

I guess I had forgotten about it, but apparently it wouldn't let me go. The other day on your show you confronted a birther as to how he could explain a hospital birth announcement for President Obama in Hawaii if he wasn't born there. That would have been fine, but then you blathered on about there had been no newspaper birth announcement for you since apparently your family wasn't affluent or influential enough** to warrant one. Well Chris, that has nothing to do with it.

Checked your Wiki out and you were born in Philly in '45, big city right smack dab in the middle of the Baby Boom. I'm guessing if you had a researcher check into it, you probably did have a birth announcement in the paper (they usually go by hospital), and if not, I'd credit the probable hike in births during that period as to why it wasn't.

In my local Michigan paper when I was born in '61 (same year as the Prez) there was an announcement, and as to influence or affluence, my folks were first year off the boat immigrants. When my brother was born 8 years later, not only did he get a birth announcement, they even tossed in a hospital bassinet picture. (Some areas also showed the pictures of newborns in their local newscasts back in those days.)

Today, on the nearby Elkhart Truth paper website and in their dead tree version, you can see the birth announcements for the past week.

So, you were wrong. Money, affluence or whatever the word you used had nothing to do with it. It's just something some places did, and others didn't.

Oh, and by the way, exactly where did you think this edge of poverty college student interracial couple got this affluence you supposed?

**Video isn't up yet of the segment so I'm not sure what word he used, but that was the intent.

Chris Matthews: "Someone should tell this walrus (Rush Limbaugh) to stop this"

By GottaLaff

Chris Matthews ripped into Boss Limpdong on Hardball just now. He was expressing his deep concern over the amount of rancor and virulent speech freely expressed by media personalities about President Obama when he said the following:

This walrus under water makes fun of this administration calls it a "regime"...

You go to war with "regimes". They're tyrannies, they're military coups...

Someone should tell this walrus to stop this.

Now Chuck Todd is rambling on about how this kind of talk just has more of a platform now. Yeah right, Chuck. That's all it is.

Sure, all the technology and outlets contribute, but that wasn't Tweety's point. It wasn't so much about availability, but about the terminology, the vitriol, the extreme language.

Matthews responded, and cited this interview:

Joe McCarthy never used the word "regime".

Indeed. And it's that kind of language that incites threats and violence. It only takes one, and we're fast approaching the breaking point.

Loudmouthed louts like Limbaugh, Beck, and let's not forget Palin and a few Congress members, should be held at least partially responsible if and when a real tragedy occurs as a result.

Vintage VIDEO- January: Chris Matthews berates Alan Grayson for suggesting reconciliation

By GottaLaff

KagroX reminded me about this video in which Chris Matthews condescended, berated, chided, and barked at someone who knew a whole lot more than he did:

Chris Matthews: "This is netroots talk... You're pandering... When will they do this, I wanna write this down..."

Grayson: "When did you become the Senate parliamentarian?"

Hey Tweety, here's when they'll do this: Now.

Video- Howard Dean on Hardball: "The center left is anti-incumbent. It's the left's tea party."

By GottaLaff

Howard Dean, who is making the rounds today, is on Hardball right now. Chris Matthews seems to take pleasure in needling him, often making ridiculous comments that Dean swats down with some regularity.

Here are some random moments from their conversation:

Howard Dean:

The center left is anti-incumbent. It's the left's tea party.

Matthews asked what Dean's role is in the health care reform battle.

Dean:

I'll talk public option (hopefully one that expands Medicare) until we get one. The House will add to the bill to make it better. The bill will change, because the House won't vote for it until it does.

Matthews made a comment about Dean being a "booster" for President Obama.

Dean:

I'm always a booster of the president whether I agree or disagree.

Matthews:

I don't see the reality of your position emerging here.

Dean:

82% of Dems, 59% of the general public, want a public option. My position is to stand up for that.

Matthews:

Well, we know where he stands. He's for the public option.

Gee, ya think?

Obama's Question Time: "Oh! Get the Popcorn!"

By GottaLaff

(Photos via)

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and Chris Matthews are analyzing President Obama's amazing back and forth with the House GOP at their retreat today. Video of entire exchange can be viewed here.

I'll liveblog some of it:

Chris Matthews: The president handled everything today.

Chris went on to say, essentially, that Obama wants to put the Republicans into a corner. He reaches out, and if they resist and do their usual thing, they look bad, obstructionist.

Rachel Maddow: The cost that they pay for being seen as obstructionists is so minor... he's trying to increase the cost. ...

And on Obama's first exchange with Mike Pence, Obama showed he wasn't going to let this be nothing but an opportunity for the Republicans to spout a series of talking points:

Rachel: Oh! Get the popcorn!

Mike Pence made a remark about "boutique tax cuts" re: the stimulus package, and Obama called the GOP out on attending ribbon cuttings for the very thing they criticize. Obama was more than prepared with facts and figures.

Keith: Apart from the "stage craft", he cut through it [paraphrased] with one liners (like the ribbon cutting retort).

Chris: The trouble so far with the president, he's been too vague. [paraphrased] You have to show they're involved with real life job creation. ...

...He can be witty, smart, poetic all at the same time.

Rachel just said something about how well Obama prepped for this so he could win.

This is moving slowly, so I'll stop here. Most of it is a review of the same video that I linked to here.

The main point is that this Q and A is having more of an impact than his State of the Union address did, and that he presented himself well and effectively. He could handle anything they threw at him. In short, a success.

Perfect timing.

VIDEO: Chris Matthews clarifies his appreciation of Obama's post-racialism

By GottaLaff

Earlier, Paddy posted the video of Tweety's "I forgot he was black" comment following President Obama's State of the Union speech. The Twitterverse reacted en masse over that one, including Melissa Harris Lacewell .

He must have gotten wind of that:
