In the words of the Pretzledent, Bring. It. On.
McCain's ad buys are still heaviliy about Bill Ayers, even as the candidate seems to de-emphasize an issue that hasn't seemed to drive up Obama's negatives the way Republicans had hoped.
And Halperin reports that McCain is promising to take Obama up on his challenge to attack him on it to his face in tomorrow's debate.

McCain challenging Obama on Ayers face to face is folly. There's nothing to gain by it and it opens the door to past associations of McCain's, including Keating and the lobbyists currently on McCain's election campaign staff as chief advisor. Perhaps McCain would be more comfortable bringing out a sheet and noose and then feign surprise when people think it's Klan-like. D.
I sincerely doubt that mccain will bring up ayers tomorrow.... but I kinda hope he does... he WILL get his ass handed to him.
snark.
Why does the McCain campaign continue to inundate us with its position of the leader of the "moral highground," when the candidate cheated on and then divorced his seriously injured wife after he returned as a decorated POW? McCain's behavior, once he returned from Viet Nam, is hardly that of a man seriously invested in family values. Why has no one brought this to the attention of all those people so eager to jump on Obama for his prior associations.
This is a comment regarding Paddy's entry. You mentioned McCain's association with Keating, I think that is irrevelant, Keating was never a terrorist. On the other hand Ayers did commit acts of terrorism, he planned and set bombs just like the 9-11 terrorist. There is more to it than someone living in your neighborhood or serving on commities together. Bill Ayers and his wife held a fundraiser to launch Obama's race for Illionis Legislature. It's a matter of character we are talking about.
After investingating all the dirt on my own I find it disturbing. I have to change my position and my vote.
RE Keating:I think purposefully stealing billions of dollars from taxpayers is a form of economic terroism. That John McCain had a deep relationship with Charles Keating should be cause for concern for everybody. John McCain purposefully greased the path for Keating to do his greedy dirt. John McCain profited more from his relationship with Keating than Obama ever profited from knowing Ayers. My point is Ayers is no bigger terroist than Keating. They both caused things to blow up, Keating's bomb was more powerful than Ayers' was because his actually cause the entire S&L system in the country to collaspe. Many people lost their life savings. Now you can say that Keating was no terroist, but I beg to differ with you on that.
I think that McCain will dig himself into a deeper grave if HE brings up Ayers. Sorry John you ran in the wrong year, because in 2008 voters demand solutions instead of smears.
On the other hand Obama called him out for not addressing Ayers at the last debate to his face, so either way John McCain will lose face while Barack will look as cool headed as ever.
TO THE ANONYMOUS VOTING MCCAIN:
Firstly, let me say thank you for researching on your own. There is a select group voting for McCain that I can respect because its a decision they didn't make based on propoganda. So thank you for being thoughtful. :)
Now, on to the facts. William Ayers was a terrorist. That is true. During the 60's he protested the Vietnam War by attacking government buildings. Those acts are obviously dispicable (and Obama has in fact said just that).
However after the war, Ayers was rehabilitated (I'm not 100% sure, but I believe he served some prison time. Don't quote me on that.) He got old, he became a college professor, and he worked towards improving education standards in his community.
Now, while Obama was community organizing in his early years he served on an education board with a large group of influential people in the community (many, many of them are respected people in government and other fields). William Ayers, the professor, served on that board as well.
Was this a character flaw for Obama? I don't think so. He was there to improve education, not to support terrorism. I honestly think it would have been poor judgement to turn away from your ideals because one of many, many people on a board has a shady past. I'm not even certain that Obama knew about Ayers past then.
There's not much more to it. Ayers was a radical (like a lot of people in the 60s actually) who made some terrible mistakes). But today, he is a school teacher. He STILL teaches at the University so none of them have denounced him. Do the students in his classes have poor judgement for not refusing to attend his lectures?
And as for the fundraiser, you just don't turn away money from a supporter when you're in a close political race. The man is a respected community figure for Christ's sakes. If he was the criminal the conservatives say he is, why the hell wouldn't he be in prison?
Anyway, I just hope that can give you some perspective. Obama is not a terrorist. If anything is terrorism, it's Govenor Palin inciting mobs to scream "Kill Him" to her political rival. Someone WILL get hurt from that.
