Germans get excited over prospect of Obama visit

By Paddy

I think the last country's people that got excited over Bush going overseas was the Albanians, and that was just because they liked his watch.

BERLIN (AP) — Reagan did it. Clinton did it. Now presidential hopeful Barack Obama wants to join the exclusive fraternity of notable Americans who have addressed the German public standing before the iconic Brandenburg Gate.

Berlin city officials said Tuesday that members of the Democratic candidate's campaign have contacted them about what permission and security issues need to be resolved before Obama could speak in front of the monument in the heart of Berlin.

Organizers of Obama's campaign have said he is planning two foreign trips this summer, including stops in the Middle East and major European capitals, in an effort to boost his foreign policy credentials.

Chancellor Angela Merkel refused to comment on the issue from the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit in Japan, but both Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier have expressed interest in meeting with Obama if he visits Berlin.
