Republicans See Their Party As Leaderless

Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Republican voters say their party has no clear leader, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Another 17% are undecided.

Just five percent (5%) view either John McCain, the GOP's unsuccessful 2008 presidential candidate, or new party chairman Michael Steele as the party's leader.

Two percent (2%) see conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh in that role, and one percent (1%) name McCain's running mate, Alaska Govenror Sarah Palin. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader John Boehner are each seen as GOP leader by less than one-half of one percent.

Alaska trooper, union say politics delayed Johnston drug case

I'm really over Palin and her litter, but this was just too schadenfruedey to pass by.

A Mat-Su drug investigator and the union representing Alaska State Troopers are alleging political meddling in the Sherry Johnston drug case, including a delay in serving the search warrant because of the November election.

"We worked very hard to make sure we conducted it just as fairly and as normally as any other investigation," Holloway said.

That's not what Kyle Young, a troopers drug investigator who was involved in the case, wrote in an e-mail last week to all members of the Public Safety Employees Association, the union that represents troopers and other law enforcement officers around the state.

Young wrote that after it became clear who Johnston is, "this case became anything but normal."

"It was not allowed to progress in a normal fashion, the search warrant service WAS delayed because of the pending election and the Mat Su Drug Unit and the case officer were not the ones calling the shots," Young wrote.

Manipulating the courts and the legal process to affect the outcome of an election? Sounds familiar.

Well, you know, we've got make sure there too that Barack Obama surrounds himself with strong commanders who understand that our boys, our girls, with their boots on the ground -- their lives, my son's life, is in his hands.

And I do have faith in this new administration that they are going to look out for America's finest, those in uniform, who are protecting us and our freedoms.

Dick Cheney's Hometown Paper Endorses Obama Today, Cites Palin

NEW YORK For the past six weeks, we have chronicled the landslide in newspaper endorsements for Barack Obama (our new daily will be ready in a short bit here). Included in this have been well over 50 daily papers that have switched from backing Bush in 2004 to supporting Obama this year. Then there are the embarrassments such as the largest paper in Alaska, The Anchorage Daily Times, also endorsing Obama.

Now comes another signal: This morning, Dick Cheney's hometown paper in Wyoming, the Casper Star-Tribune, switched to Obama.

The divisions in the McCain-Palin campaign continue to widen with one senior McCain aide telling Mike Allen that Gov. Sarah Palin is "a whack job."

Meanwhile, George Stephanopoulos said this about the "demoralized" McCain campaign on ABC News this morning: "Palin is going to be the most vivid chapter of the McCain campaign's post-mortem... Those loyal to McCain believe they have been unfairly blamed for over-handling Palin. They say they did the best they could with what they got."

Palin mistakenly scolds her own supporters

When all you have are memorized lines it's hard to be spontaneous. In another story I read where her hubby had to tell her what was going on.

RICHMOND, Virginia (CNN) – Sarah Palin mistakenly reprimanded her own supporters at an outdoor rally in Richmond on Friday after they started yelling that they couldn’t hear the candidate.

Palin was in the midst of blaming predatory lenders for the nationwide mortgage crisis when a large group of supporters in the rear of the crowd began demanding that someone turn up the volume on the event’s speakers.

They chanted “Louder! Louder!” in unison, drawing the attention of other audience members, who began chanting “Sarah! Sarah!”

The vice presidential candidate apparently mistook them for some of the anti-war protesters that have disrupted some of her previous events.

“I would hope at least that those protestors have the courage and the honor of thanking our veterans for giving them the right to protest,” Palin told them, drawing a roar from the crowd.

She then returned to her speech.

Instant Polls Find Biden Wins

Rudy is on Morning Joe humping Palin's leg. "Best Presidential debate performance I've ever seen." Blather.

A CNN poll of Americans who watched the vice presidential debate shows that most felt Sen. Joe Biden beat Gov. Sarah Palin, 51% to 36%.

A CBS News/Knowledge Networks poll of uncommitted voters show Biden winning 46% to 21% with 33% calling it a draw.

PPP Poll: Obama Expands Lead in Michigan

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Michigan shows Sen. Barack Obama has opened up a ten point lead over Sen. John McCain, 51% to 41%.

The two main factors:

• 69% of Michigan voters -- higher than in any other competitive state PPP has polled -- list the economy as their top issue. Obama has a 54% to 37% lead with those respondents
• Sarah Palin has also seen her popularity in the state decline by 14 points over the last three weeks

Palin powers abortion groups' fundraising

Backlash indeed. Gotta and I were talking yesterday and decided that these groups are exactly who needs to take on the "rape kit" controversy. I also like the idea to call them "rape tax", which I read somewhere else, but can't remember where.

Advocacy groups on both sides of the abortion issue are reporting a surge in fundraising in reaction to newly selected Republican vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin.

Last week NARAL Pro-Choice America had the highest grossing week since it began fundraising for the 2008 election, according to staffers, raising more than $120,000 from two e-mail alerts. Planned Parenthood also reported high fundraising numbers from e-mail appeals.

The same held true on the other side of the divide, where anti-abortion groups said Palin sparked an outpouring of money into their coffers. The Susan B. Anthony List, a group that helps promote female candidates who oppose abortion, said its weekly fundraising tripled last week.

While abortion has failed to galvanize voters over the past few election cycles, as issues like the war in Iraq, the economy, and immigration have dominated the debate, Palin’s nomination appears to have returned it to the front burner.

Already, Palin is proving to be a lightning rod on the issue.

On the website of Feminists for Life, of which Palin is a member, President Serrin M. Foster reports of “phones ringing off the hook” and “being inundated with requests for information and help.”

On Wednesday, South Carolina Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler created a storm of controversy and was forced to issue an apology after telling Politico that McCain had picked a running mate “whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn't had an abortion."

On the left, abortion rights groups report a flood of e-mails and calls from existing and new members who are alarmed by the prospect of a GOP ticket where both candidates would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned, with a vice presidential nominee who supports abstinence-based sex education and opposes abortion in all cases unless the life of the mother is at stake.

“That’s a pretty good indication of how fired up people are,” said Beth Shipp, political director of NARAL. “It has energized our base.”

Palin- Iraq is God's plan, plus he can get us that $30b gasline money

Speaking before the Pentecostal church, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord.

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

Religion, however, was not strictly a thread in Palin's foreign policy. It was part of her energy proposals as well. Just prior to discussing Iraq, Alaska's governor asked the audience to pray for another matter -- a $30 billion national gas pipeline project that she wanted built in the state. "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.
