Kerry says three major oil companies to back Senate climate plan

By GottaLaff

What are those sneaky Big Greasy Ol' Corporations up to now? Oh yeah, profit:

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) expects that a powerful electric utility trade group and three major oil companies will support the climate and energy bill he and two colleagues will unveil Monday, according to a source on a conference call Kerry held for business leaders Thursday evening.

So who are these possible "allies"?

The oil companies that will back the plan are BP, ConocoPhillips and Shell, according to The Washington Post.

Yeah, we trust those oil slicks about as far as we can throw them. What could be spurring them, and possibly others, to cooperate?

It could have something to do with the "$10 billion in support for 'clean coal' technologies and free pollution allowances for refiners to cover motor fuel emissions". Oh, and the investment in nukes. And this:

Sources familiar with the briefing also said the measure would preempt state and regional greenhouse gas rules, which is a key goal for a variety of industry groups but has been strongly attacked by environmentalists and state officials. The bill would also block EPA regulation of greenhouse gases under its current Clean Air Act powers, one source said.

So many compromises, so little time.

Four More Dem Senators Join Push For Vote On Public Option

Not going to get too excited, but Greg is reporting some good news.

Yesterday four Dem Senators made a big splash by signing a letter pushing Dem leaders to pass the public option via reconciliation, suggesting the provision may have a faint pulse.

Now four more Dem Senators have added their names to the list, their spokespeople tell me, doubling the number of signatories to eight and perhaps upping the volume of the public option’s pulse ever so slightly.

The new signatories: Al Franken, Pat Leahy, John Kerry, and Sheldon Whitehouse.

They join yesterday’s signers: Michael Bennet, Kirsten Gillibrand, Jeff Merkley, and Sherrod Brown.

The letter asks Harry Reid to stage a full Senate vote on the public option under budget reconciliation rules. It argues that there’s a history of using the technique for passing significant health care legislation and that a majority of Americans has consistently supported a public option.

The letter — the work of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America — also bears the signatures of over a hundred House Dems.

Sen. Kerry backs changing Constitution to deal with Supreme Court decision

By GottaLaff

I remember Thom Hartmann saying this is what it would take:

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) on Tuesday threw his support behind a constitutional amendment aimed at gutting the impact of a Supreme Court decision lifting key restrictions on corporate campaign spending.

“I think we need a constitutional amendment to make it clear once and for all that corporations do not have the same free speech rights as individuals,” Kerry said during a Senate Rules Committee hearing.

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) is the only other senator so far to back the idea of taking on the Herculean task of passing a constitutional amendment in response to the high court’s 5-4 Citizens United ruling.
I can smell the obstruction from here.
Most opponents of the high court’s decision regard passing a constitutional amendment as a long-term, long-shot goal because it requires the support of two-thirds of the House and Senate and three-fourths of the states to ratify it. Many Republican members of Congress support the Supreme Court’s decision, a high hurdle to overcome in amending the Constitution.
However, look what the polls say:
Sixty-six percent of Democrats either “moderately” or “strongly” disagreed with the ruling, but so did 63 percent of Republicans and 72 percent of independents.
That's nothing to sneeze at.

Bless you.

Much more here.

Rich Senator, Poor Senator

I didn't think much of this story until I read that last line. Wonder what that is all about and how it influences (if it does) the whole tenor of the health care or any kind of lobbying situation would have on him. Curious.

A Roll Call analysis of U.S. Senate financial disclosure forms shows 48 senators are not in the millionaire's club, but nonetheless nearly all reported minimum net worths above the typical American household. The remaining 50 Senators record minimum net worths of at least $1 million or more.

The survey included 98 Senators. Disclosure forms from newly appointed Sens. George LeMieux (R-FL) and Paul Kirk (D-MA) are not yet publicly available.

Wealth in the chamber ranges from Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) -- the richest Member of Congress overall -- who tops the list with a minimum net worth of at least $167.55 million, to Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), who registers a negative $40,000."

VIDEO: Sarah Palin takes a shot at John Kerry's "long face"

By GottaLaff

Children, children... Stop that fighting right! Now! Or no Tee Vee face-time for either one of you:

She's visiting troops on a peacekeeping mission, but Sarah Palin Friday signaled Friday she's ready to go to battle with John Kerry, who reportedly made a joke earlier this week at her expense.

John Kerry, what have I told you about trying to be clever:

"Too bad if a governor [Sanford] had to go missing it couldn't have been the governor of Alaska," he said, according to the paper. "You know, Sarah Palin."

Sarah Louise Palin, how many times have I warned you that all those folksy barbs just make you look like a bigger idiot:

"Then Sen. John Kerry makes this joke, I don't know if you saw this, but he makes this joke saying, 'Aw shoot, of all the governors in the nation who disappeared, too bad it couldn't have been that governor from Alaska…'" she said.

"But the way he said it, he looked quite frustrated, and he looked so sad, and I just wanted to reach out to the TV and say, 'John Kerry, why the long face?'"

Palin is overseas visiting Alaska National Guard troops on a peacekeeping mission.

Tsk, tsk. Honestly, the two of you. Just wait till your critics get home. You will be so grounded!

Joe Biden to take last overseas congressional trip

By GottaLaff

Joe on the go:

Vice president-elect Joe Biden will travel to Southwest Asia later this week on his final overseas trip as a sitting member of Congress.

In a statement released today, Biden's office said he was traveling with the bipartisan group in his capacity as outgoing chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"The purpose of this trip is fact-finding: in the coming months both the Executive and Legislative branches will carefully review U.S. policy toward this region, and the trip will allow its participants to bring current and first-hand information to these reviews," said Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander.

Here are his traveling companions: Incoming Foreign Relations Committee chairman John Kerry, Sen. Jack Reed, Republicans Susan Collins, and Lindsey Graham.

Biden's office also said the delegation "will make it clear to foreign leaders that they are not there to speak on behalf of the U.S. government, or convey policy positions for the incoming administration."

It's good to see him staying right on top of things. Let's hope he finds the facts he's looking for.

Where were Biden and Kerry for the auto rescue vote?

By GottaLaff

Think Progress provides us with a list of the Senators who voted to bail out Wall Street, but stuck it to the auto workers (and who was absent). They also tell us where Kerry and Biden were during the vote. First, their whereabouts, then the list:
Biden was tending to transition duties, while Kerry was in Poznan, Poland, participating in U.N. climate change talks. Alexander was home recovering from surgery.
Then there's this little fun fact:
Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY), a Hall of Fame baseball pitcher in his heyday, was scheduled to appear Sunday at a sports card show in Taylor, Michigan to sign autographs. “But Bunning was kicked off the schedule after he helped derail an auto-industry loan package in the Senate Thursday night.” (HT: TP commenter cali)

John Kerry expected to get top foreign affairs panel post

By GottaLaff

Chairman Kerry:
More than three decades after he first appeared before the panel as a 27-year-old Vietnam veteran-turned-antiwar protester, Senator John F. Kerry is widely expected to be named the new chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a position that will give him enormous influence over international relations.

The pending announcement by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, which congressional aides said could come as early as today, would elevate Kerry to the top of the foreign policy establishment and give him a major role in shaping President-elect Barack Obama's foreign policy priorities. [...]

He will replace the outgoing chairman, Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

Kerry is still considered by some observers to be on Obama's short list for Secretary of State, but many believe Senator Hillary Clinton and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, who both met with Obama last week about the post, are more likely candidates to become the nation's top diplomat.

Pakistan and U.S. Have Tacit Deal On Airstrikes

By GottaLaff

Everything I've read this morning tells me that the world is waiting for President-elect Obama, and that they are ready, willing, and looking forward to working with him. In fact, President Zardari has already spoken with John Kerry as he looks forward to an Obama administration.

Meanwhile, there is an agreement of sorts, between Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and can't-come-soon-enough-soon-to-be-former-President Bush:

The United States and Pakistan reached tacit agreement in September on a don't-ask-don't-tell policy that allows unmanned Predator aircraft to attack suspected terrorist targets in rugged western Pakistan, according to senior officials in both countries. In recent months, the U.S. drones have fired missiles at Pakistani soil at an average rate of once every four or five days. [...]

A senior Pakistani official said that although the attacks contribute to widespread public anger in Pakistan, anti-Americanism there is closely associated with President Bush. Citing a potentially more favorable popular view of President-elect Barack Obama, he said that "maybe with a new administration, public opinion will be more pro-American and we can start acknowledging" more cooperation. [...]

Zardari spoke over the telephone with Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), a conversation Pakistani officials said they considered an initial contact with the incoming Obama administration. Although Kerry has been mentioned as a possible secretary of state, the officials said he indicated that he expects to continue in the Senate, where he is in line to take over Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.'s position as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. [...]

Pakistan, whose military has received more than $10 billion in direct U.S. payments since 2001, also wants the United States to provide sophisticated weapons to its armed forces, Zardari said. Rather than using U.S. Predator-fired missiles against Pakistani territory, he asked, why not give Pakistan its own Predators? "Give them to us. . . . we are your allies," he said. [...]

Two former senior intelligence officials familiar with the use of the Predator in Pakistan said the rift between Islamabad and Washington over the unilateral attacks was always less than it seemed.

"By killing al-Qaeda, you're helping Pakistan's military and you're disrupting attacks that could be carried out in Karachi and elsewhere," said one official, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Pakistan's new acquiescence coincided with the new government there and a sharp increase in domestic terrorist attacks, including the September bombing of the Marriott hotel in Islamabad.

"The attacks inside Pakistan have changed minds," the official said. "These guys are worried, as they should be."

John Kerry Seeks Cabinet Post

John Kerry Takes The Stick Out

John Kerry throws out red meat... yum

By GottaLaff

John Kerry: Obama/Biden will shut down Gitmo and will not torture. We need a leader who understands ALL of our security challenges, not just bombs and guns.

We can't be secure until we create clean energy here at home... not just a little oil [that we'll drill] that will tide us over for a few years.

Let's compare Senator McCain to Candidate McCain: Tax cuts... climate change... immigration bill... Are you kidding me folks? Talk about being for it.. before you're against it!

He should finish the debate with himself.. Using the same Rove tactics, politics of fear and smear... not this year, not this time, the Rove tactics are old...

Obama has the judgment that McCain [lacks]. [paraphrasing] More wars...

Who can we trust to keep America safe? Barack Obama.

The Republicans have been wrong again and again and again.

[He's on a roll, can't keep up.] How insulting to suggest he doesn't put America first. How pathetic...

No more Swiftboating: You don't decide who loves this country, who's a patriot! Four years ago I said, that flag doesn't belong to any ideology, political party... it is an enduring symbol of our nation, and it belongs to all the American people. Patriotism isn't love of power or some trick, it's love of country.

I'll always remember how we stood together in 2004, for a cause... now again, we stand together. The choice is clear, our cause is just, and now is the time to make Barack Obama president of the United States of America.

You want blood? You'll get blood.

By GottaLaff

Red meat!

The LA Times on Joe Biden's speech tonight:

With the vice presidential nomination speech tonight by Joe Biden, Democrats will meet Barack Obama's bad cop -- an attacker who will not hesitate to go hard after the Republicans.

But why is Obama, a gifted orator who has already defeated one of America's most powerful political families, in such desperate need of the help?

For crying out loud, because that's what vice presidential candidates are for, L.A. Times. Obama orates, Biden bites.

Politico on how Joe Biden is feared by the McCain camp:

Democrat Barack Obama's selection of Joe Biden as a running mate is complicating Republican John McCain's analysis of his prospective vice presidential contenders...

..."McCain knows Biden well. He knows how good he is as a knife fighter. He'll take McCain apart," said one Republican operative.

H/t: Huffington Post

Next!

Kerry describes McCain as "insulting" and "desperate' for questioning Obama's patriotism, and "pathetic" for continuing to support President Bush's war policy; he digs at McCain's age, saying voters should elect a president based on judgment and character, not "years on this earth"; and he hammers McCain and Bush on foreign affairs, charging that their policies have left "Hamas, Hezbollah, the Taliban and dictators everywhere...on the march."

"I have known and been friends with John McCain for almost 22 years," Kerry says at one point during a riff on the GOP nominee's flip-flops, "but every day now I learn something new about candidate McCain."

"Let me tell you, before he ever debates Barack Obama, John McCain should finish the debate with himself," Kerry charges. "Candidate McCain says he would now vote against the immigration bill that Senator McCain wrote. Are you kidding? Talk about being before it before you're against it."

Finally, Kerry ties McCain to the "fear and smear" tactics of Karl Rove, charging that his campaign has "nothing left but personal attacks."

Beyond the harsh criticisms, Kerry's speech also includes a great deal of praise for Barack Obama's character and record, and also a nod to the Massachusetts Senator's failed presidential run.

Cannot wait.

Obama Running Ahead of Kerry in 41 States

Taegan's always on top of it. I'm getting tired of mocking the idiot pundit class, so I'm not going to toss in the obligatory "He can't win the white vote!!" line. Well, you know what I mean.

Josh Goodman compares state polling in the presidential race to the results of the 2004 election and finds that Sen. John McCain "is only running ahead of Bush's 2004 result in four states." Meanwhile, Sen. Barack Obama "is doing at least 2.46 percentage points better than Kerry in 41 states. In 2004, 2.46 was Bush's margin of victory in the national popular vote."

Most interesting fact: "Every single one of Obama's 12 strongest states when compared to Kerry has an African-American population that is below the national average of 12.4%. This group includes four states -- Montana, Idaho, South Dakota and Wyoming -- that have the four lowest black populations in the country."

Dems pounce on new McCain video

By GottaLaff

First, the video (if you can stomach it):

Now the reaction:

From NBC's Mark Murray and Ken Strickland
John Kerry isn't the only Democrat who today has weighed in on McCain's new Web video, which contains clips of Democrats -- including Kerry, Joe Biden, Howard Dean, Obama and Hillary Clinton -- praising the Arizona senator. The clips all appear to be at least two years old, except for the clip of Clinton, which is from the Democratic primaries.

In a statement released by Dean: "John McCain a maverick? The John McCain of 2000 wouldn't even consider voting for the John McCain of 2008. The American people are learning that the John McCain of 2008 represents more of the same failed policies we've gotten from George Bush for the past eight years. Senator McCain is clearly in the tank for Exxon and big oil, for keeping our troops stuck in Iraq for decades to come, and for an economic policy that puts tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations above relief for hardworking families. John McCain has changed: he's taken the low road, leveling false, negative and misleading attacks against Barack Obama. John McCain is no more a maverick within the Republican Party than Dick Cheney is. He's just more of the same."

And in a statement released by Biden: "The John McCain of 2008 is not the maverick of 2000. On the most urgent national security challenges we face - Iraq, Iran and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan -- there is no day light between George Bush and John McCain. He has embraced President Bush's failed policies and will continue them. It's unfortunate he's changed so much in just eight years."

Kerry said: "The McCain campaign is determined to give their Paris Hilton ad a run for its money in the desperation department, and they've succeeded only in shining a light on the fact that the John McCain of today is unrecognizable from the John McCain of just a couple years ago. The real question is what happened to the John McCain we used to know and why he changed overnight into a George Bush nominee with a Karl Rove campaign. [...] Frankly, it tells you everything about this election that the McCain campaign spins its wheels recycling what we said about John McCain way back when while scrambling and sputtering to explain away Governor Pawlenty's praise of Barack Obama today."

Hmm, being the acutely perceptive analyst that I am, I sense some anger. Maybe that's what it will take for the Dems to finally assert themselves in a meaningful way.

Bonus Quote of the Day

Well Barack, I'll see what I can do about one of those for you.

"I asked Barack what he wanted for his birthday. 'Just three things: Indiana, Colorado, and Virginia.'"

-- Sen. John Kerry, quoted by the Politicker.

Kerry on the attack: John Sidney McCain is "dangerous"

By GottaLaff

John Kerry zings with the best of them, when he's not droning:
Former Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry told donors at a Boston fundraiser for Barack Obama Monday night that John McCain is "dangerous" for the direction of the country.
Yes. Yes he is.
Kerry listed Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea as examples of foreign policy issues that he believes Obama has had more foresight on than McCain. He also noted that even the Bush administration has fallen in sync with Obama on several positions recently.

Obama leads, they follow. Simple as that. Uh oh! Is that being too presidential?

How doth Kerry zing thee? Let us counteth the ways:

John McCain is still stuck on the low road express,” said Kerry. “He doesn’t get it. He’s even dangerous, I think, for the direction of this country.”

Kerry accused McCain of repeated flip-flopping and going back on his word of running a clean campaign He also poked fun at McCain’s economic credentials.

And he closes his McCain is Dangerous Act with:

“I don’t know if you know this,” joked Kerry, “John McCain is looking for someone for vice president who has more economic expertise than he does. So congratulations to all of you, you’re on the short list.
Snaparoony.

Meet the Press: Kerry vs. Lieberman

By GottaLaff

John Kerry has been a good surrogate for Barack Obama. Let's see how he does today against Alf's "dad":

Lieberman is raising his voice and it's only been 2 minutes. I don't think I've ever heard him raise his voice. He said the ad with Paris Hilton is "cute". He says "we're doing something very serious". If that's true, then why are McCain's ads so awfully, hysterically, awesomely humorous?

He just called Obama a "tease". Well, sort of. He said his offshore drilling statements were "a tease". Oh, and he's young. He's a young tease. I like him better already... Obama, not Lieberman.

Kerry said he's an expert on how opponents try to scare the American public, and that these are scare tactics. J Sid has completely contradicted himself, he says, by using smear tactics instead of substance. He used the "R" word: Rove. Of course, Brokaw defended McCain by saying Rove wasn't a hired hand. Kerry countered that it's a Rove protege, if not Rove himself.

Obama has the right judgment, Kerry says, referring to Iraq, Pakistan, Korea, Iran, and Afghanistan, and how Bush has come closer to Obama's policies lately.

Tom Brokaw brought up Wes Clark, because, you know, he's being such a professional. Kerry distanced himself from Clark's POW remarks. Then he changed the subject, bringing it back to issues, like Medicare. Trivial stuff like that. Tom's now on to offshore drilling and hitting Obama on his latest comments and using the "flip flop" words.

Kerry defends Obama by saying he's prepared to break the gridlock if it's the only way to move toward a good energy policy. The difference is, Obama will work for compromise. McCain rejected the proposal flat out, because it would raise taxes on oil companies.

Lieberman says the point is that we have to drill because gas prices are high. And that McCain "sees the crisis". Obama doesn't. He's young and teasey. McCain sees the problem. American oil is what counts. He's decisive and strong and decisive.

But Lieberman flipped on this, says Kerry. Lieberman admitted he did. Suh-nap!

Lieberman says McCain is bold and that Obama is wishy washy and risky... but it has nothing to do with his name or skin color. Nothing. At all. Al Gore let him be the first Jewish American to run for v.p. Obama should have the same faith in America that they won't judge him on his race. Excuse me while I bang my fist through the wall.

He won't answer Brokaw on Social Security. McCain's ready to become commander in chief, and we have to resolve partisanship. He's a reformer, reaches across the aisle, see, so he'll fix Social Security. He won't raise taxes, he's a great negotiator like Reagan. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Tom switches to foreign policy without letting Kerry respond.

Kerry is answering Lieberman anyway. Obama passed landmark ethics reform, the leading Dem who did that. And as for oil, there are existing offshore leases that are going unused.

On the surge: McCain alleged that the surge created the Awakening. Wrong. But Tom is arguing with Kerry. Again. Liberman says Kerry is disrespecting our soldiers. What. A. Tool. Kerry is stating the case for a timetable, with Maliki's support. Lieberman insists the surge worked, Kerry says it helped, but didn't resolve the all-important political issues in Iraq. Lists how many ways McCain has been wrong. But he was right about the surge, Lieberman says!!! The surge! The surge!!! McCain has guts!!!! With 4 exclamation points!!!! Lieberman keeps saying Obama would ignore "conditions on the ground"... Kerry didn't jump in. JUMP IN.

Tom asks if Lieberman will be welcome as a Democrat in Congress next year. Kerry says yes, because he'll want to be part of a Democratic majority. Lieberman is proud of not following the party line because McCain's swell. It's "so important to elect him". He'd go to the Republican convention, not to diss Obama, but because we have to act like Americans... not partisan mudslingers.

How ironic.
