If you want to see video of the Top Four, go here. Personally, none of them strike me as all that Obamaesque, but then I'm really picky. While Armisen handily pulled off the arduous task of poking fun at a man we'd follow off a cliff, critics agreed that his interpretation left a little something to be desired. Fred neither looks nor sounds quite like Barry.
[...] Because the rest of the political impressions on the show have been so spot on this season—Tina Fey’s Palin, Jason Sudeikis’ crazy-eyed Joe Biden—an imperfect Obama stands out. With four-years of Barack-baiting to go, it might be time for Michaels to let go of Armisen and pick a replacement. So now big question looms: Who, if anyone, will Michaels hire to match the hype surrounding Obama himself?
Currently, insiders say there are four top contenders who have auditioned for the spot and threaten to topple Armisen from his current position. [...] [Jordan Carlos, who currently plays Alan, Stephen Colbert's token "black friend." Carlos has made the circuits on Funny Or Die.com; Donald Glover, an Emmy-winning writer for his work on 30 Rock and a well-known comedian throughout New York; Wyatt Cenac, now a correspondent on The Daily Show; and Jordan Peele, known for both his work on MadTV and David Alan Grier's Chocolate News, who is the rumored favorite to play Obama.]
The trouble with finding a suitable Obama can be boiled down to this: Michaels needs to find a comedian that can not only portray our president but also play our first black president. The comic chosen has to manage a delicate balance: finding the funny in Obama’s mannerisms without alienating black viewers who might take offense. Right now, Armisen’s interpretation is acceptably mild, but doesn’t advance the conversation about Obama in the way that Fey’s Sarah Palin may have changed the race. Michaels needs to bring in fresh meat; someone to shake up water cooler talk.

VIDEO: SNL's "Joe Biden"
By GottaLaff
Here is last night's hilarious Saturday Night Live cold opening Biden monologue, courtesy of our pal at NBC:
Don't forget: Barack and Michelle Obama are on 60 Minutes tonight. Here are some snippets from their interview. My favorite:
STEVE KROFT: Have there been moments when you've said, ‘What did I get myself into?'
BARACK OBAMA: I will say that the challenges that we're confronting are enormous. And they're multiple. And so there are times during the course of a given a day where you think, "Where do I start in terms of moving-- moving things forward?" And I think that part of this next two months is to really get a clear set of priorities, understanding we're not going be able to do everything at once, making sure the team is in place, and moving forward in a very deliberate way and sending a clear signal to the American people that we're going to be thinking about them and what they're going through.

Gramm-pa McCain to appear on SNL this weekend
By GottaLaff
(This is one of my inane little video efforts in which you'll see snippets of Gramm-pa's previous appearances on SNL)
Based on what I've seen before, oy:
Al Gore is on the Tee Vee Machine right this minute campaigning for Obama. Two weeks after running mate Sarah Palin made an appearance on the late-night comedy show, a McCain campaign aide tells CNN that the Republican presidential nominee will appear on the NBC program tomorrow night.
The Arizona senator has appeared on the show several times over the years.
McCain's most memorable appearance on the long running show was in October 2002, when he hosted the program for a night: In a spoof commercial hawking an album called "McCain Sings Streisand," sang several of the Democratic loyalist's songs.

SNL Costumer: IWRC* Palin Wanted Nicer Clothes
By GottaLaff
The "Saturday Night Live" costume designer Wednesday night revealed the struggle he had in dressing Sarah Palin: she wanted to wear nicer clothes than they had picked out for her, reflecting the new image she has carefully constructed on the campaign trail.
Get real, SNL! If it ain't Chanel, then fuggetaboutit. After all, IWRC* is just plain ol', working class Jane Dom Perignon.
And according to Women's Wear Daily's Irin Carmon, "SNL" costume designer Tom Broecker said Wednesday night that dressing Palin for last Saturday's cameo required a compromise:
Of Palin, Broecker said, "In speaking with her, I had to get her to understand why she needed to wear the same thing as Tina [Fey]. We had gone off and created it for the first time a month ago, a look we identified as Sarah Palin. She had moved on in her own image of herself. I said, 'I know you've moved on you're wearing tighter clothes, more black but this is the character of Sarah Palin.''The compromise, he said, was Palin returning in her own clothes the second time she appeared on the show to cheer on Amy Poehler's Palin-themed rap.
Whenever we have a theatre student who whines about some outfit they have to wear in a play, we say the same thing over and over, every show, every year: "It's a costume. You'll be wearing it for about two hours. In a play that you wanted to do. Deal."
Hey IWRC, it's a costume. For a show. That you agreed to do. Deal.

Satirzing a satire: IWRC* Palin on SNL tonight?
By GottaLaff

The whispers bouncing around the halls of NBC today say Palin is currently considering doing a surprise pop-in on the long-running late-night sketch comedy show. Additionally, OK! is hearing that Emmy-winner Fey might reprise her now-infamous impersonation.
The discussions have gotten to the point that security for the "hockey mom" did a thorough walk-through of the Rockefeller Center studio on Wednesday in preparation for the possible SNL guest shot.
Stay tuned to OK! as this story develops.
OKAY! Although I still can't figure out how one spoofs a spoof.
This little cameo couldn't possibly be due to a much-needed boost in her poll numbers, could it?
Nah.

Al Franken helps craft McCain 'SNL' skit for tonight
Oh crap, now I have to watch at least the opening segment. I heard the show last week was awful, except for the opener.
Al Franken, the former "Saturday Night Live" star now running in a high-profile Senate race in Minnesota, helped craft the opening sketch mocking John McCain that is slated to kick off the NBC comedy show tonight, according to two well-placed sources inside the network.
Franken, who hasn’t been a staff writer on the show for 13 years, “phoned in” a spoof of McCain recording campaign ads in an edit booth, said an NBC source. Seth Meyers, the show’s current head writer, wrote it, but the sketch was hatched by Franken, a longtime liberal satirist and comedian.
An SNL insider said that, as of the Wednesday script read-through, Franken was the “credited writer with Meyers” on the opening sketch. Show veteran Darrell Hammond is to play McCain.

Obama cancels SNL appearance
WASHINGTON--With a deadly hurricane aimed at Texas, Barack Obama cancelled his appearence on Saturday Night Live on Friday evening, spokesman Jen Psaki in a statement.
"In the light of the unfolding crisis in Texas, Senator Obama has decided it is no longer appropriate to appear on Saturday Night Live tomorrow evening," she said.
