Pelosi: BushCo Barred Officials From Briefing Congress Pre-'08 Financial Crisis

By GottaLaff

So far, when it comes to legal repercussions for their thuggery, BushCo has skated. Worms like John Yoo, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Bush himself are free to write books and spew their toxic venom all over the Tee Vee Machine while America (and what's left of its Constitution) has suffered immensely.

There have been no consequences for holding and torturing hostages at Gitmo and elsewhere, for spying on Americans, for outing a CIA agent, etc., ad nauseam.

Will there be any for this?

Nearly two years after the Wall Street meltdown drove the U.S. economy to the brink of collapse, and forced the U.S. government to prop up major financial institutions with hundreds of billions of dollars, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi now claims that the Bush Administration prohibited its own top officials who were handling the emerging crisis from briefing Congress until a complete financial collapse was only hours away.

In little-noticed statements to reporters over the last few weeks, Pelosi has alleged that the Bush administration knew well in advance of its intervention that the financial crisis would hit, and that Congress would need to authorize a historic and unpopular bailout - but that top officials, including then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, told her that they had been barred from briefing Congress about true extent of the crisis.

If accurate, the allegation could constitute a major indictment of the Bush administration, which may have worsened the crisis and resulting economic fallout by delaying the call for congressional action.

IMHO, with the economy still slogging through a sluggish recovery, the national state of mind could very well default to blame mode and demand a full investigation. One can only hope. And of course, that's only if this story gets media attention.

Will BushCo be excused because it's difficult to prove intent, or because there is no appetite to go after them?

Nor is it clear if the Administration's alleged decision not to brief Congress earlier was a calculated strategy to avoid spooking the already shaky financial markets thus hastening the crisis or, as Pelosi suggests, a political calculation in advance of the 2008 presidential elections, or a combination of the two.

There's much more here. TPM did a great job reporting this.

UPDATE: Bush and Paulson spokesperson fire back.

Obama to head to New York to push new Wall Street regulations

Ruh roh. He's got a big stick and he's dragging the bully pulpit**. Love it when he goes all stern. Via Greg.

On Thursday, President Obama will travel to New York City where he will deliver remarks at Cooper Union on Wall Street reform. Almost two years after the crisis hit and almost one year after the Administration first laid out a detailed plan for holding Wall Street accountable and protecting consumers, he will call for swift Senate action. The crisis has already wiped out trillions of dollars in family wealth and cost over 8 million jobs. The President will also remind Americans what is at stake if we do not move forward with changing the rules of the road as a part of a strong Wall Street reform package.
**Mixed metaphor alert.

CBS: No Criminal Charges Likely in AIG Collapse

By GottaLaff

The the criminal case against the so-called "the Man who Crashed the World" has apparently "hit a brick wall." They can't prove that he lied about AIG's financial problems.

I've heard many a lawyer say that proving a lie is not easy. This proves that proving is not always prove-able.

Well, you know what I mean.

Why must brick walls so often get between us and the (alleged) thugs?

CBS NEWS has learned that former AIG executive Joseph Cassano - the prime focus of the investigation into its collapse - will meet with Department of Justice attorneys next week in what will likely be an end to the two year criminal investigation into the company.

Now back to the Tiger Woods coverage already in progress.

I have no problem with this as long as they start with the Bank Bailout Federal Welfare Recipients. Line AIG, CitiGroup, Merrill Lynch etc. up and hand them their specimen containers. Seriously, is Nancy Reason back in the White House? Shades of 1980.

Jim Cramer Attacks NY Attorney General Cuomo

If there was ever any doubt that Cramer is a total know-nothing buffoon...

A recent New York Times article reviewing the record of New York’s attorney general, Andrew M. Cuomo, recalled that he had warned two years ago of the problems afflicting mortgages. In November 2007, Mr. Cuomo delivered subpoenas to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, and urged those quasipublic agencies to review Washington Mutual appraisals and mortgages that they held in their portfolios.

Mr. Cuomo argued that banks and appraisers had colluded to push prices higher. It is a marker of how swiftly the culture has changed that his charges, which now are received wisdom, struck Mr. Cramer in 2007 as the words of, well a …

“Communist.”

Despite AIG Bonus Fiasco, Obama Approval Stays High

Far cry from the crappy outlier Zogby that all the wingers are quoting.

For the first time since he became president, a new CBS News poll finds a significant number of Americans are expressing disapproval of President Obama's actions in a specific area: His handling of the AIG bonus situation. Just 41% approve of the president's actions while 42% disapprove.

Nonetheless, the president "continues to get high marks overall for his job performance and his handling of the economy."

President Obama's overall approval rating is 64% -- the same as it was a week earlier. His approval ratings for handling the economy are actually up five points to 61%.

A Gallup poll shows that of all the key players in the AIG bonus fiasco, only Obama "gets a more positive than negative evaluation."

Jim Cramer set to appear on 'The Daily Show' Thursday

Now this is going to be Must See TeeVee!!

The ongoing feud between CNBC host Jim Cramer and Comedy Central's Jon Stewart will culminate with a personal face-off. After fielding jabs from Stewart about the calls he's made about Wall Street, the "Mad Money" host has agreed to make an appearance Thursday on "The Daily Show," according to Comedy Central. Before then, though, Stewart plans to take another swipe at Cramer and CNBC's coverage of the financial crisis on tonight's program.

The best financial jokes of 2008

Excellent stuff. More here, but these are my favs. h/t Kathy.

"Yes sir. Stock, or Pawn?"

The market may be bad, but I slept like a baby last night. I woke up every hour and cried.

Find a good large-cap fund manager, and wait

The credit crunch has helped me get back on my feet. The car's been repossessed.

There's a surgeon, an architect and an economist. The surgeon said, 'Look, we're the most important. God's a surgeon because the very first thing God did was to extract Eve from Adam's rib.' The architect said, 'No, wait a minute, God is an architect. God made the world in seven days out of chaos.' The economist smiled, 'And who made the chaos?'

Bernard Madoff arrested over alleged $50 billion fraud

Get this guy to give the auto industry the loan. I mean, if he "paid people with money that isn't there", he's our guy. BTW- not hearing much about this outrage this morning.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Bernard Madoff, a quiet force on Wall Street for decades, was arrested and charged on Thursday with allegedly running a $50 billion "Ponzi scheme" in what may rank among the biggest fraud cases ever.

The former chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market is best known as the founder of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, the closely-held market-making firm he launched in 1960. But he also ran a hedge fund that U.S. prosecutors said racked up $50 billion of fraudulent losses.

Madoff told senior employees of his firm on Wednesday that "it's all just one big lie" and that it was "basically, a giant Ponzi scheme," with estimated investor losses of about $50 billion, according to the U.S. Attorney's criminal complaint against him.

(snip)

On Thursday, two agents for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation entered Madoff's New York apartment.

"There is no innocent explanation," Madoff said, according to the criminal complaint. He told the agents that it was all his fault, and that he "paid investors with money that wasn't there," according to the complaint.
