Gallup: Americans Prioritize Energy Over Environment for First Time

So incredibly sad. Seems all that right wing propaganda has met it's goal.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans are more likely to say the U.S. should prioritize development of energy supplies than to say it should prioritize protecting the environment, the first time more have favored energy production over environmental protection in this question's 10-year history.

(snip)

The current data represent a continuing shift in opinion toward energy production. Since 2007, when Americans' preferences for environmental protection were the greatest (58% to 34%), Americans' opinions have shown significant movement each year in the direction of prioritizing energy production. This change has been evident among nearly every major demographic subgroup, although self-identified liberals have remained relatively steadfast in saying the environment should be a higher priority.

At the same time, Americans continue to advocate greater energy conservation by consumers (52%) over greater production of oil, gas, and coal supplies (36%) as a means of solving the nation's energy problems. Americans have always come out in favor of greater consumer conservation, though this year marks the highest percentage favoring production (by a percentage point) in the last 10 years.

Obama Retains More Trust Than Congress on Healthcare

Get him on the road NOW. h/t Greg.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans remain more confident in the healthcare reform recommendations of President Obama (49%) than in the recommendations of the Democratic (37%) or Republican (32%) leaders in Congress. But these confidence levels are lower than those measured in June, suggesting that the ongoing healthcare reform debate has taken a toll on the credibility of the politicians involved.

Me oh my, for a president who is an utter failure at everything from national security to the economy to health care reform, Obama's numbers sure look like they're moving in the right direction:

Gallup- Honesty and Ethics Poll Finds Congress’ Image In Toilet

Heck of a job.

PRINCETON, NJ -- For the first time in Gallup's annual Honesty and Ethics of Professions poll, a majority of Americans -- 55% -- say the honesty and ethical standards of "members of Congress" are low or very low -- slightly worse than "senators," whose ethics are rated low by 49%. By contrast, 83% of Americans say nurses have either very high or high ethical standards, positioning them at the top of Gallup's 2009 ranking of various professions.

Increased Support for More Troops in Afghanistan

I just don't get this. After all this time there is still an appetite for more war? Via Taegan-

Gallup: "Americans over the last two weeks have become slightly more likely to favor sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, and slightly less likely to favor a reduction in forces. At this point, 47% of Americans would advise President Obama to increase the number of U.S. troops -- either by the roughly 40,000 recommended by the commanding general in Afghanistan or by a smaller amount -- while 39% would advise Obama to reduce the number of troops."

Putting Obama's poll numbers into perspective

By GottaLaff

Greg Sargent has more on Obama's lower approval numbers:

Gallup adds more context to Obama’s drop below 50%, noting that while only Ford, Reagan and Clinton have hit this point faster than Obama did, all presidents who’ve crossed that threshold rebounded.

Americans Divided on Health Care Legislation

Perfect example of the longer we wait, the more obscured the whole situation becomes. More at the link.

Gallup: "Americans are evenly split on the potential impact of new health care legislation, should it ultimately be passed into law. Forty-one percent say a new health care bill would make the U.S. health care system better in the long run, while 40% say it would make things worse."

Obama Approval Jumps

What is answer number 2 Alec?

Like other national polls have found in recent days, the Gallup daily tracking poll finds President Obama's approval rate shooting up to 56%.

Is this a Nobel Peace Prize effect? Or, are Republican attacks on health care reform losing their effectiveness?

Scaremongering Works- Large Number Of Elderly Dems Don’t Support Reform

As always, Greg finds the nut in the new Gallup poll. This is very disconcerting.

Gallup has a new poll out showing what we already knew: Seniors are leaning against health care reform at a greater rate than other voters, perhaps because they already enjoy Medicare.

But I asked Gallup to send over some additional data breaking down seniors by party, and strikingly, the reform proposal is not supported by a surprisingly high amount of elderly Democrats.

Driving those numbers is the fact that large numbers of elderly Dems have reached no opinion on the reform plan, suggesting that all the scaremongering about how reform will destroy Medicare could be working by sowing confusion.

The numbers: Fourteen percent of Dems and Dem leaners over 65 oppose reform, and 29 percent are unsure, adding up to a total of 44% who don’t back reform, significantly higher than any other age group. Meanwhile, the 57% of elderly Dems who do back reform is significantly lower than any other group.

Most Americans Say Government Doing Too Much

The one time in years that we have a fighting chance to make government work for us and their damn meme is sinking in. Via Taegan.

"Americans are more likely today than in the recent past to believe that government is taking on too much responsibility for solving the nation's problems and is over-regulating business. New Gallup data show that 57% of Americans say the government is trying to do too many things that should be left to businesses and individuals, and 45% say there is too much government regulation of business. Both reflect the highest such readings in more than a decade."

Reason #1 To Not Trust Polls- Gallup Has Obama At 55%

Up, down and all over the place. What would have happened to make it jump 5 percentiles in 2 days? NADA. The only polls that matter will be in November '10 and '12.

4 Red States, 30 Blue States

I like these odds.

An analysis of Gallup Tracking Poll data finds just four states "show a sizeable Republican advantage in party identification, the same number as in 2008. That compares to 29 states plus the District of Columbia with sizeable Democratic advantages, also unchanged from last year."

Massachusetts is the most Democratic state in the nation, along with the District of Columbia. Utah and Wyoming are the most Republican states.

Poll- Obama Gets High Marks on Leadership

Let's hope that leadership gets the fracking Congress off their butts and getting the work done.

A new Gallup poll finds solid majorities of Americans believe President Obama "is a strong and decisive leader and say he understands the problems Americans face in their daily lives. The president gets slightly lower marks on two other personal characteristics -- being able to effectively manage the government and sharing Americans' values."

Poll- President Obama trusted almost twice as much as Republicans on health care reform

That whole Bill Maher "cram it down their throats" sounds just about right. Added- Bob has another poll that shows the public option getting 83% approval.

PRINCETON, N.J., June 17 (UPI) -- American most trust their doctors over the other players in the debate over U.S. healthcare reform, a Gallup Poll indicated Wednesday.

When asked whom they trust to recommend the right thing over reforming the country's health system, 73 percent said they trusted doctors. Sixty-two percent also said they trusted university professors or researchers who study healthcare policy while 61 percent indicated they trusted hospitals to recommend the right reform choices.

U.S. President Barack Obama had the trust of 58 percent of the poll respondents, faring better than Democratic congressional leaders (42 percent) and Republican leaders (34 percent). Some 40 percent of Americans say they trust pharmaceutical companies to have the right healthcare prescription, while 35 percent said they trusted health insurance companies.

Gallup Poll Examines Democrats' Image of the GOP

I'd have thrown a few more derogatory terms in, but this will do in a pinch.

  1. Unfavorable Say 31 percent of Democrats
  2. Conservative Say 15 percent of Democrats
  3. Caters to the Rich Say 10 percent of Democrats
  4. George W. Bush Say 6 percent of Democrats
  5. Lost Their Way Say 5 percent of Democrats

Republicans Down on Their Party

This is on top of an earlier poll that said pretty much the same thing. Ouch.

Almost 4 out of 10 (38%) Republicans and Republican-leaning independents have an unfavorable opinion of their own party, while just 7% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents have an unfavorable opinion of the Democratic Party, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll.

Gallup: Obama job approval at 62 percent

For all the talk about how he's bankrupting the country, and all the fact of how bad things have gotten, this is impressive.

PRINCETON, N.J., June 9 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama's job approval rating was unchanged at 62 percent after a foreign trip highlighted by a major speech in Cairo, a Gallup Poll found.

Obama's approval rating in Gallup Poll Daily tracking averaged 62 percent from Friday to Sunday, reflecting virtually no change from Monday to Wednesday of last week, before Obama delivered a highly publicized speech in Cairo, Gallup said Monday.

The president has a 32 percent disapproval rating -- the highest of his administration -- Gallup said.

(snip)

Gallup said Obama's favorable and unfavorable ratings have both trended upward since the organization began to measure them in December 2006, as people learn more about him and become less likely to offer no opinion.

"At all times during the last two and a half years, however, Obama's favorable ratings have exceeded his unfavorable ratings by a significant amount," Gallup said on its Web site Monday.

Poll: Arab countries viewing U.S. better with Obama as President

Honestly, as much as I love Obama, this was bound to happen unless we elected someone like Tancredo or Giuliani. This fits in nicely with this earlier poll from McClatchy.

PRINCETON, N.J., June 1 (UPI) -- Approval of U.S. leadership has risen in the Middle East, even though approval of U.S. direction remains low in 11 Arab countries, a poll indicated Monday.

Gallup Polls in 11 Arab countries indicated ratings are up in eight of the countries polled, including Egypt, where President Barack Obama will speak Thursday in Cairo.

Surveys conducted about two months into Obama's presidency show median approval of U.S. leadership across the 11 Arab countries surveyed at 25 percent, ranging from a low of 7 percent in the Palestinian Territories to a high of 56 percent in Mauritania.

In eight Arab countries, Gallup said its surveys reported double-digit increases in approval from the last measurements of Bush's term, when U.S. leadership approval ratings in many Arab countries were at times in the single digits.
