VIDEO- Colin Powell: We Are Not Less Safe Under Obama

By GottaLaff

Watch CBS News Videos Online

I'm no fan of Powell, but ...

Claims that the United States is less safe under President Obama are not credible, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said on "Face the Nation" Sunday.

He also challenged criticism by some (including former Vice President Dick Cheney, who say that by not using extreme interrogation techniques such as waterboarding on terror suspects the United States is more vulnerable. [...]

Powell stuck by his conviction that Guantanamo Bay prison facility should be closed. [...]

However, while he favors a federal court trial for Kaleid Sheik Mohammed, he said he would not have picked downtown New York City to try the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, opting rather for a secure military base, "where it would not become a circus."

I'm sorry, I need a minute.

Okay, I'm good.

I'm not accustomed to reasonable, measured conversation any more.

May I just ask

Anyone else weirded out by the "fat filter" Face The Nation must have put on their cameras today? The images are really disconcerting.

VIDEO: Spoil Sports, the sequel: Traitor Joe Says No to Reid's Face

By GottaLaff

How to (not) win friends and influence people, by Traitor Joe:

Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) informed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in a face-to-face meeting on Sunday that he will vote against a health care bill that includes a public option or a provision that would expand Medicare, a Democrat Senate aide tells the Huffington Post.
Earlier today I posted about Traitor Joe and Ben Nelson's 'tude toward real reform. Obstructionitude, that is.

Time to find a new wall on which to bang my head.

VIDEO- Dick Armey: GOP Purity Test Is Not A Purity Test!

By GottaLaff

Nah, that small-minded prerequisite RNC list isn't a litmus test, or a purity test, or any kind of test at all. Of course it isn't. How wrong of everyone who read it to jump to the identical conclusion.

I'd be willing to stipulate that it's not a driving test, personality test, or pregnancy test either. However, one might call it a con-test, emphasis on con.

It's just one more way of forcing the Rushpublics to either march in lockstep by holding funding over their heads... or get out of the way.

Watch CBS News Videos Online

My weekly note to Dickle Me Armey: It's "Democratic" party, not "Democrat".

Why won't any of the punditiots or show hosts ever call them out on that (with the exception of Chris Matthews, who did it once, as I recall)? If the political talk show hosts were called schlock show hosts to their faces, you can bet they'd say something then.

The Rushpublics continue to shrink their own party, both in numbers and credibility, far better than anyone else could. Keep up the good work, guys.

National Security Advisor Jim Jones on relations between the U.S and North Korea and. increasing U.S. forces in Afghanistan; Senators Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) discuss reports that U.S. commanders want more troops in Afghanistan; Plus, Bob Schieffer gives 'the plane truth.'

Rummy's been a dirty word to us for a long time. Now his name is being bandied about by the likes of Li'l Lindsey.

Don't Rumsfeld me, bro'!

Liveblog: Face the Nation, Leahy v. Sessions on Cheney, special prosecutor

By GottaLaff

I'm liveblogging Face the Nation, with Bob Shieffer, is on now. He's talking to Patrick Leahy, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Jeff Sessions:

Leahy: I still prefer a truth commission. The inquiry would go into everything, while special prosecutors are narrowly focused. Eric Holder is a superb A.G., but I don't want to see the higher ups break the law, but punishment for the lower level troops. I won't interfere with his decision, but I'd like to see the inquiry, and may have problems doing both... immunity issues.

Sessions: It would be sad to me if the A.G. decided to use a special prosecutor...

Leahy: I admire the CIA agents on the front line, but remember Abu Ghraib. The lower echelon got punished, not those who condoned the actions. If someone higher up broke the law, we need to know.

Shieffer: What about the V.P., allegedly, told the CIA not to tell Congress...

Sessions: Sources, sources... leaks from unnamed sources don't turn out to be what they appear to be. I don't know what the facts are, but Cheney served his country with fidelity... outstanding record.

Leahy: We can't leave it lay. It's either true or not true. Nobody is above the law.

McCain: Obama has 'done well' as president so far

By GottaLaff

I'll post the video when I find it:

Sen. John McCain says his opponent in last year's presidential campaign, Barack Obama, has "done well" in his first five months in the White House.

The Arizona Republican says that using a legislative scorecard to judge the presidency so far, Obama has achieved all his legislative goals. [...]

McCain appeared Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Of course, he had criticism, too. Goes without saying.

Video- Sen. Durbin on Face the Nation

I like Senator Durbin as much as the next gal, but when the hell is our side going to put some damn emotion into this thing? We're not talking health insurance people, we're talking health care! Why are there beg jars at gas stations for hard working dads taken down by operable brain tumours that they can't get their insurance companies to cover? Why are there "Casino Nights" and "Feather Parties" held all over the country for the cashier forced to work part time (so her employer won't have to pay for insurance no less) devastated by cervical cancer just because she couldn't take the time off/money needed to get a simple pap smear? Why is there so much %*(^()$% talk about the what "might" happen to the poor insurance companies. When will our side muster up some cojones and tell the real story behind the "health care system"? Enough.

VIDEO-- Newt Gingrich: Sotomayor is a "racialist"

By GottaLaff

Newtie is a bigoted narcissicialist:

A spokesman for Gingirch told Politico recently, “nothing has changed in the structure of his argument, he is just retracting the word racist.” And apparently replacing it with the word “racialist.”
When Newtie "does a Twitter", he really out-doesicializes himself.

I hope when Sotomayor becomes a Supreme Court justice, she (and the majority) rules against Newtie on something... anything.

Then I can do a Twitter about it.

Colin Powell On Face The Nation Part 1 Of 2 May.24, 2009

As you can probably guess, there's nothing going on right now, so you get some vids. Part 2 here.

Oh, lets give General Powell the Quote of the Day while we're at it-

"Let's debate the future of the party. And let's let all the segments of the party come in," Powell, a Republican who served in President George W. Bush's Cabinet but endorsed Obama last year, told CBS's "Face the Nation."

"And, if we don't do that, if we don't reach out more, the party is going to be sitting on a very, very narrow base. You can only do two things with a base. You can sit on it and watch the world go by, or you can build on the base," Powell added.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

Guess who's going to be the guest on Face The Nation this week? Yep, our favorite VP who won't go away.

"I think it would be a mistake for us to moderate."

-- Former Vice President Dick Cheney, in a radio interview, on the future of the Republican party.

Axelrod On Torture Prosecutions

By GottaLaff

Via Ambinder:

From CBS's Face The Nation... Read carefully what senior adviser David Axelrod.....

SMITH: On the other hand, groups like the ACLU and others have said this proves there are prosecutable crimes that need to be acted on. What's your response to that?

AXELROD: Well, the president has said, if there were agents of the United States government acting on legal advice that what they were doing was legal and appropriate, that they should not be prosecuted.

If people acted outside the law, that's a different issue. But the main point is the president has banned these enhanced interrogation techniques. We have turned the page on this episode in our history. We have so many challenges in front of us, in terms of our national security, our relations in the world.

And remember, these techniques, far from enhancing our safety, really become a recruiting and propaganda tool for Al Qaida and the extremists around the world. We're moving past all of that. And to revisit it again and again and again isn't, in the president's view, in the country's interest.

I read it carefully.

Update: I read it again, carefully. Note the words "agents" and "acting on legal advice." That doesn't sound like "officials" who created/wrote/advised/ordered the advice to me. That sounds like CIA interrogators. Then again, I'm never good at deciphering these things.

President Obama on Face The Nation

Part one above, part two below.

Sunday, March 1, 2009

Rahm Emanuel On "Face The Nation"

Rahm needs to get on these things more often. More transcript here.

SCHIEFFER: We talked about Newt Gingrich a lot this morning and now you bring up Rush Limbaugh. Who do you think now speaks for the Republican Party?

EMANUEL: You just named him: it is Rush Limbaugh. He has laid out his vision, in my view. And he said it clearly. I compliment him for that. He's been very up front and I compliment him for that. He's not hiding. He's asked for President Obama and called for President Obama to fail. That's his view. And that's what he has enunciated. And whenever a Republican criticizes him, they have to run back and apologize to him and say they were misunderstood. He is the voice and the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party
