Obama, Medvedev seal nuclear arms pact

The President is about to speak, I'll get the vid up as soon as I can.

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sealed an agreement on a landmark nuclear arms reduction treaty during a phone call on Friday, the White House said.

(snip)

"This landmark agreement advances the security of both nations, and reaffirms American and Russian leadership on behalf of nuclear security and global non-proliferation," the White House said in a statement.

After months of deadlock, a deal on a replacement for the Cold War-era START treaty marked Obama's most concrete foreign policy achievement since taking office and could also boost his effort to "reset" relations with Moscow.

Doomsday Clock goes away from midnight by one minute

Last time it moved was 2007 (under GWB) two minutes closer to midnight. Guess that feeling I had was right-

Citing collaborative efforts by world leaders to reduce nuclear arsenals, secure nuclear bomb-making materials and pledge to limit greenhouse gas emissions, the group said the world was facing a "hopeful" state of affairs.

The Bulletin also said that the election of President Barack Obama, along with his efforts to initiate arms reduction talks with Russia and negotiations with Iran to close its nuclear enrichment program, affected its decision.

3 charged in alleged plot to ship possible nuclear-weapons items to Iran

By GottaLaff

I live about 45 minutes away from Glendale. That's too close to home. Usually when I read about this kind of thing, it feels so much farther away. Distance creates an artificial sense of safety, somehow.

The men were educated, knew what they were doing, per the report. I'm beginning to feel crawly and shivery:

Three men, including an Iranian-born chemical engineer living in Glendale, have been charged in a scheme to smuggle sophisticated industrial components into Iran that could be used in the development of a nuclear weapon, authorities said Wednesday.

The case has drawn interest at the highest levels of government, an official with Immigration and Customs Enforcement told The Times.

Obama, in Prague speech, outlines nuclear disarmament plan (highlights)

This is the longest video I can find right now, if you see the complete one, leave me a note in comments and I'll update. Via Taegan-

Speaking in Prague, President Obama on Sunday "launched an effort to rid the world of nuclear weapons, calling them 'the most dangerous legacy of the Cold War' and saying the U.S. has a moral responsibility to lead as the only nation to ever use one," the AP reports.

"In a speech driven with fresh urgency by North Korea's rocket launch just hours early, Obama said the U.S. would 'immediately and aggressively' seek ratification of a comprehensive ban on testing nuclear weapons. He said the U.S. would host a summit within the next year on reducing and eventually eliminating nuclear weapons, and he called for a global effort to secure nuclear material."

The BBC estimated the crowd for Obama's speech at more than 20,000.

VIDEO: Gramm-pa McCain mocks nuclear safety "blahblahblah"

By GottaLaff

This video is from CNN.com, broadcast October 25, 2008.

Yeah, yeah, nuclear safety, blahblahblah, meltdown, blahblah, Three Mile Island never happened blahblah, "the environment" is code for "socialist Commie terrorism" blahblahblah:
Sen. John McCain ramped up his attacks against Democratic opponent Barack Obama on Saturday, criticizing the Illinois senator for saying that nuclear power needed to be done safely.

The Republican candidate referenced the final presidential debate Oct. 15, in which Obama qualified McCain's support of nuclear energy and offshore drilling with the need to protect the environment.

"You know, the other night in a debate I said his eloquence is admirable but pay attention to his words," McCain said. "We talked about offshore drilling and he said he would, quote, 'consider' offshore drilling. We talked about nuclear power. Well, it has to be safe, environment, blah blah blah."

The crowd seemed to enjoy McCain's flippancy, bursting into cheers before he could continue.
Gramm-pa McCain's "awful campaign", blahblahblah.
