Frank Rich: Teachable beer moment ended with a burp--"Village People populism"

By GottaLaff

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2009/08/02/opinion/rich190.jpg

Frank Rich:

THE comforting thing about each “national conversation on race” is that the “teachable moment” passes before any serious conversation can get going.

This one ended with a burp. The debate about which brew would best give President Obama Joe Six-Pack cred in his White House beer op with Harvard’s town-and-gown antagonists hit the front page of The Wall Street Journal. [...]

He answers a single, legitimate race-based question at the end of a news conference and is roundly condemned for “stepping on his own message” about health care. It was the noisiest sector of the news media that did much of the stepping. “Health care is bad for ratings,” explained one cable anchor, Dylan Ratigan of MSNBC, with refreshing public candor. What a relief, then, to drop dreary debates about the public option and declare a national conversation about black-white fisticuffs. [...]

[L]et’s note that the only crime Obama committed at his news conference was honesty (always impolitic in Washington). He conceded he did not know “all the facts” and so wisely resisted passing judgment on “what role race played” in the incident. He said, accurately, that “separate and apart from this incident” there is “a long history” of “African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcing disproportionately.” And, yes, the police did act “stupidly in arresting” — not to mention shackling — “somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home.” If Obama had really wanted to go for the jugular, he might have added that the police may have overstepped the law as well. [...]

Whalen, who was pilloried as a racist because of Crowley’s report, received no apology from him and no White House invitation from Obama. That’s stupid behavior by both men.

It’s also stupid to look at Harvard as a paradigm of anything, race included. If there was a teachable moment in this incident, it could be found in how some powerful white people well beyond Cambridge responded to it. That reaction is merely the latest example of how the inexorable transformation of America into a white-minority country in some 30 years — by 2042 in the latest Census Bureau estimate — is causing serious jitters, if not panic, in some white establishments.

Ground zero for this hysteria is Fox News [...]

What about those far more famous leaders in Hume’s own camp who insistently cry “racist” — and in public forums — without any credible justification whatsoever? [...] They include Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich, both of whom labeled Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Their ranks were joined last week by Glenn Beck, who on Fox News inexplicably labeled Obama a racist with “a deep-seated hatred for white people,” presumably including his own mother.

What provokes their angry and nonsensical cries of racism is sheer desperation: an entire country is changing faster than these white guys bargained for. [...]

Even Texas may be tinting blue, and as goes Texas, so will all but the dwindling rural minority of the Electoral College. [...]

This bizarre “birther” movement, out to prove that Obama is not a naturally born citizen, first gained notice in the summer of 2008 when it was being advanced by the author Jerome Corsi, a leader of the Swift boat assault on Kerry. That it revved up again as Gatesgate boiled over and Sotomayor sped toward Senate confirmation is not a coincidence.

Obama’s election, far from alleviating paranoia in the white fringe, has only compounded it. There is no purer expression of this animus than to claim that Obama is literally not an American — or, as Sarah Palin would have it, not a “real American.” The birth-certificate canard is just the latest version of those campaign-year attempts to strip Obama of his American identity with faux controversies over flag pins, the Pledge of Allegiance and his middle name. [...]

One of the loudest birther enablers is not at Fox but CNN: Lou Dobbs, who was heretofore best known for trying to link immigrants, especially Hispanics, to civic havoc. [...]

As Eugene Robinson of The Washington Post and Helene Cooper of The Times have pointed out, a lot of today’s variation on the theme is class-oriented. Some whites habituated to a monopoly on the upper reaches of American power just can’t adjust to the reality that Obama, Sotomayor, Oprah Winfrey and countless others are now at the very pinnacle, and that they might sometimes side with each other just as their white counterparts do. Threatened white elites try to mask their own anxieties by patronizingly adopting working-class whites as their pet political surrogates — Joe the Plumber, New Haven firemen, a Cambridge police officer. Call it Village People populism. [...]

America has not transcended race. America is not postracial. So we can all say that again. But it must also be said that we’re just at the start of what may be a 30-year struggle. Beer won’t cool the fury of those who can’t accept the reality that America’s racial profile will no longer reflect their own.

Prof. Henry Gates received death threats: "You should die, you're a racist."

By GottaLaff

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/07/31/art.obamabeersummit0731.gi.jpg

Yes, RNC Co-Chair Jan Larimer, it's all about beer. How can anyone, especially in a leadership position, be that stupid naive?

Gates said he received numerous threats after the incident, including an e-mail that read, "You should die, you're a racist."

Gates has changed his e-mail address and cell phone number, and Harvard officials even suggested that he consider moving, he said.

Allow me to quote myself:
Yes, that's what this meeting was about: Beer. How did we all miss that? This had nothing whatsoever to do with cuffing a black man in his own house, profiling, mutual (dis)respect, inequality, our country's history, perpetual disparity, simmering hostilities, racial divides, reconciliation, or mending fences.
And now, death threats. Seems they're prevalent these days.

Be proud of Jan Larimer, Rushpublics. She speaks for you.

Obama: Beer necessities v. GOP leader: Foament discord

By GottaLaff

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/07/31/art.obamabeersummit0731.gi.jpg

Because racial tensions in this country are just not that important:
Republican National Committee Co-Chairman Jan Larimer criticized President Obama Friday for his White House meeting with a professor and a police officer, saying the president needs to focus on more important issues.

Then again, when he does focus on all those important issues, he's criticized for focusing on all those important issues: Taking on too much, taking on too little, taking on the wrong issue, not taking on the right issue... What a terrible leader he is! Boy Georgie was so much better.

"We are at war and Barack Obama is talking about beer in the White House," Larimer said at the RNC's Summer Meeting. "And it is wrong. It is not what our country is about."

Of course, Larimer would have been thrilled had President Obama had "stupidly" ignored the corporate media's 24/7 coverage of The S Word and allowed the vitriol to continue. Making an effort to bring folks together just isn't her style.

I need a beer.

Professor Gates' statement: "An Accident of Time and Place "

By GottaLaff

Here is Henry Gates' statement in full:

I would like to applaud President Obama for bringing Sergeant Crowley, me and our families together. I would also like to thank the President for welcoming my father, Henry Louis Gates, Sr., who for most of his life has been a Republican! My dad turned 96 this past June, and the fact that he worked two jobs every day is the reason that my brother, Dr. Paul Gates, and I were able to receive such splendid educations. I am honored that he chose to join me at the White House, along with my fiancée, my daughters, and my brother.

Sergeant Crowley and I, through an accident of time and place, have been cast together, inextricably, as characters – as metaphors, really – in a thousand narratives about race over which he and I have absolutely no control. Narratives about race are as old as the founding of this great Republic itself, but these new ones have unfolded precisely when Americans signaled to the world our country’s great progress by overcoming centuries of habit and fear, and electing an African American as President. It is incumbent upon Sergeant Crowley and me to utilize the great opportunity that fate has given us to foster greater sympathy among the American public for the daily perils of policing on the one hand, and for the genuine fears of racial profiling on the other hand.

Let me say that I thank God that live in a country in which police officers put their lives at risk to protect us every day, and, more than ever, I’ve come to understand and appreciate their daily sacrifices on our behalf. I’m also grateful that we live in a country where freedom of speech is a sacrosanct value and I hope that one day we can get to know each other better, as we began to do at the White House this afternoon over beers with President Obama.

Thank God we live in a country where speech is protected, a country which guarantees and defends my right to speak out when I believe my rights have been violated; a country that protects us from arrest when we do express our views, no matter how unpopular.

And thank God that we have a President who can rise above the fray, bridge age-old differences and transform events such as this into a moment in the evolution of our society’s attitudes about race and difference. President Obama is a man who understands tolerance and forgiveness, and our country is blessed to have such a leader.

The national conversation over the past week about my arrest has been rowdy, not to say tumultuous and unruly. But we’ve learned that we can have our differences without demonizing one another. There’s reason to hope that many people have emerged with greater sympathy for the daily perils of policing, on the one hand, and for the genuine fears about racial profiling, on the other hand.

Having spent my academic career trying to bridge differences and promote understanding among Americans, I can report that it is far more comfortable being the commentator than being commented upon. At this point, I am hopeful that we can all move on, and that this experience will prove an occasion for education, not recrimination. I know that Sergeant Crowley shares this goal. Both of us are eager to go back to work tomorrow. And it turns out that the President just might have a few other things on his plate as well.

Liveblog: Cambridge Sgt. Crowley speaks, + VIDEO of "beer summit"

By GottaLaff

UPDATE: Video has been added, and blog title changed to reflect that.

Liveblogging:

Look forward rather than backward. ... Gates and I have different perspectives, but most must be addressed for a constructive outcome. This was done to move the whole country beyond this, use this as basis of meaningful discussions in the future...

We've planned a meeting. Prof. and I will have a phone call to lay groundwork.

Meeting at a bar for a beer would send the wrong message.

I'd like to listen to Prof. Gates' perspective... he has a willingness to listen to mine as a police officer... the difficult jobs we do every day. He was very receptive to that.

We agreed to move forward. We had two gentlemen agree to disagree on this issue. We didn't dwell on the past, concentrated on the future.

We had encountered each other on individual tours of the WH, we introduced our families, moved along as a group. It was very cordial.

It was a private, frank discussion. No specifics.

Pres. contributed in small part, but he wanted to bring us together, it's become a national issue.

Teachable moment? I've learned that media can find you no matter where you live. That's the responsibility of Prof. Gates and I in the future meeting.

The VP is a great man, nice... nice to the children as well.

I'm not really sure this is really happening. I need time to reflect in the coming weeks.

There was no tension. It was business, but we discussed as two gentlemen instead of fighting it out, very productive.

UPDATE: Chris Matthews take? "A star is born." "Is he suave or what?" And then he compared him to Susan Boyle.

Police: Boston Cop Calls Prof. Gates 'Jungle Monkey' In E-Mail

By GottaLaff

http://paulanealmooney.com/pics/henry-louis-gates-mug-shot-mugshot-harvard-professor.jpg

Nope. No racism here. Move along. And above all, quit saying the police acted "stupidly":

BOSTON (BNO NEWS) -- Boston police officer Justin Barrett, 36-years-old, has been put on administrative leave after he used offensive language when referring to Harvard professor Henry Gates in an e-mail [...]

According to BNO News sources with direct knowledge to the contents of the e-mail, Barrett called Gates a "jungle monkey.

[...] Barrett has been put on administrative leave. Officials found out about the e-mail on Tuesday and immediately stripped Barrett of his badge and gun. An investigation has been launched.

More:
Boston Mayor Tom Menino called Barrett a "cancer in the department."

"He should be fired. He should be gone," Menino said.

Barrett, who is also a member of the National Guard, is assigned to District B-3. He was placed on administrative leave pending a termination hearing.
Just when you think you've had about as much as you can take, the story heats up all over again.

UPDATE: A disgruntled Tweeter thought this police officer might be confused with the one who has been invited for a beer at the White House. To me it was obvious. That man's name is Crowley, this one is named Barrett. But consider this the clarification.

911 caller in Gates incident speaks

By GottaLaff

She says the criticism has been so painful she was afraid to speak up. People said she was racist, she feared for her safety. If the press could get to her mother, then it was time for her to come forward. Wendy Murphy, her lawyer, smacked down "the three men" and now Lucia Whalen speaks:

"I knew the truth, but I didn't speak up right away, because I didn't want to add to the controversy."
She got support, so she felt she could speak. She's in tears. She is talking about how she was raced to treat people equally, not a racist.
I was called racist, and I was a target of scorn and ridicule, because of the things I NEVER said... The criticism hurt me as a person, and the community of Cambridge. Now that the tapes are out I hope people can see I was trying to be careful and honest with my words. It never occurred to me that ... my words would be analyzed by an entire nation. But so many have responded with words of support, I hope now that the truth of the tapes will help heal the Cambridge community as much as it has helped to restore my reputation and integrity.

I also want to say that I respect the Cambridge police as well as Prof. Gates, and I hope my decision to speak out doesn't add to controversy...
The only words I exchanged were I was the 911 caller and he said stay right there... re: did she talk to Crowley.

Inaccuracies in police report? Her lawyer says no comment.

What would you say to them as they have the beer date tomorrow? I haven't thought about that.

I hope people learn not to judge others.

Race relations? No comment.

I was born here, of Portuguese decent.

What was most hurtful? No comment.

VIDEO: President Obama makes unexpected appearance at Daily W.H. Briefing re: Gates incident

By GottaLaff

UPDATE: Here's the video, blog title edited to reflect...

Damage control by Prez O just now, during a surprise appearance at the White House Daily Briefing. He's speaking about the "Skip" Gates/Sgt. Crowley matter. Liveblog:

He's a good man. This has been ratcheting up and I helped to contribute. My choice of words, unfortunately gave impression I was maligning. I should have calibrated the words differently, and I told Sgt. Crowley. There was an overreaction in pulling Gates out of his home, to the station. I believe, based on what I heard, Gates probably overreacted as well. You have 2 good people in a circumstance in which neither could resolve the incident the way they'd like to have.

The attention garnered shows these are sensitive issues. My choice of words contributed to more media frenzy, that's important. So let's step back, see these are 2 different people, not extrapolate too much.

BECAUSE of history, A.A.s are sensitive to these issues. Even with someone like Crowley with good track record, there can be misunderstandings. I hope this is a teachable moment. Instead of pumping up volume, listen to each other, focus on how to improve relations between officers and minorites. Be more reflective, contribute to more unity.

This issue has overshadowed health care. I won't use this time on health care right now, but that won't be true next week.

One last point: As pres. I shouldn't have stepped into local issue? I disagree. The fact that it has become so big, it shows race is still troubling aspect of our society. ... Discussion about Sgt. Crowley and I having a beer in W.H. may happen, not scheduled yet.

Crowley asked if he could get press off his lawn..? I can't get the press off of MY lawn. [laughter]

Cop in Gates case: I'm not racist - I gave mouth-to-mouth to black NBA player

By GottaLaff

Pam says it better than I could even hope to, so I won't even try:
The Cambridge cop who arrested Dr. Henry Louis Gates in his own home told the press that he's not racist, as Gates has charged, because he tried to save the life of Celtics star Reggie Lewis 16 years ago by giving him CPR. [...]
The Cambridge cop prominent Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. claims is a racist gave a dying Reggie Lewis mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in a desperate bid to save the Celtics superstar's life 16 years ago Monday.

"I wasn't working on Reggie Lewis the basketball star. I wasn't working on a black man. I was working on another human being," Sgt. James Crowley, in an exclusive interview with the Herald, said of the forward's fatal heart attack July 27, 1993, at age 27 during an off-season practice at Brandeis University, where Crowley was a campus police officer.

It's a date Crowley still can recite by rote - and he still recalls the pain he suffered when people back then questioned whether he had done enough to save the black athlete. "Some people were saying 'There's the guy who killed Reggie Lewis' afterward. I was broken-hearted. I cried for many nights," he said.

Crowley, 42, said he's not a racist, despite how some have cast his actions in the Gates case. "Those who know me know I'm not," he said.

As a campus police officer who is trained in CPR, did he think he had the option to refuse to give mouth-to-mouth to Lewis? Are we supposed to think he was so heroic that he was willing to touch his mouth to the lips of a black man in front of all those people? Honestly, this only raises some seriously uncomfortable questions about Crowley's thinking if he's using this to somehow "prove" he isn't racist. [...]

The real issue here, and it will likely not be discussed nearly as much as the race angle, is the class angle. Professor Gates, during his angry tête-à-tête with Crowley, tossed down the "don't you know who I am" card (to be precise, in the report it says Gates told him he had "no idea who he was messing with"). [...]

Now that is no excuse for Crowley's incomprehensible arrest of Gates for yelling at him after the prof had already provided two forms of ID to prove who he is and that he lived in the residence, it's simply another factor that must be considered in this mess -- something that will obviously receive less play in the press than race, since class is also a third rail topic much of the time.
Please go read the whole thing. I just provided snippets.

President Obama stands by his comments on Gates arrest

By GottaLaff

http://a.abcnews.com/images/US/ht_gates_in_cuffs_090721_mn.jpg

Good for Obama for not backing down:
"I have to say I am surprised by the controversy surrounding my statement because I think it was a pretty straight forward commentary that you probably don't need to handcuff a guy, a middle-aged man who uses a cane, who's in his own home," Obama said. [...]

"I think that I have extraordinary respect for the difficulties of the job that police officers do," the president told Moran. "And my suspicion is that words were exchanged between the police officer and Mr. Gates and that everybody should have just settled down and cooler heads should have prevailed. That's my suspicion."

The president said he understands the sergeant who arrested Gates is an "outstanding police officer." But he added that with all that's going on in the country with health care and the economy and the wars abroad, "it doesn't make sense to arrest a guy in his own home if he's not causing a serious disturbance."
My goodness gracious, how controversial of that no-goodnik Prez O. What a reverse racist Marxist Fascist Affirmative Activist. Impeach him now.

By the way, I hear he's not really a U.S. citizen, and that Kenyans will rule the world as a result. Hide the kids... but not until after the Glenn Beck Show.

No Greedy Wall Street Welfare Billionaire is Going to be Arrested for Successfully Breaking Into His Own House

By GottaLaff

Your Daily Dose of BuzzFlash, via my pal Mark Karlin:

Once when I was a kid, the couple next door forgot the keys to their home and paid me a quarter to open their rear window and shimmy into their house (breaking and entering, we guess) and then open the door from the inside for them.

To think I could have been arrested by the police.

But I wasn't. I was a white kid from the suburbs and our neighbors were good white folk, so what's the legal issue of breaking into your own home.

Of course, just the other day, Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. [...] was arrested in the liberal community of Cambridge, MA for being a BMIHH (Black Man in His Home).[...]

All of this would have passed out of the news cycle rather quickly (the Cambridge Police "dropped" the "charges" of "disorderly conduct," even though the arresting officer refused to apologize), except that Lynn Sweet, our hometown Chicago Sun-Times D.C. reporter asked the President about it at his Wednesday night news conference. [...]

For decades upon decades, we have heard the likes of the NRA say that a man's home is his castle and that he has a right to shoot an intruder.

Well, Henry Louis Gates Jr. was in his home when arrested.

So where does that leave the castle doctrine for a black man?

It leaves it in the trash can with the rest of his rights.

Kudos to President Obama for getting to the core of what still ails America and the psychotic (think Michele Bachmann and the "birthers") opposition to his administration.

Obama has been caught being BBWEP (Being Black While Being Elected President).

Much more here.
