eBay refuses to allow auction for Roeder’s defense fund

By GottaLaff

Earlier I posted the audio of my appearance on Angie Coiro's radio show discussing my post about this very topic. At that time, as of last night, we weren't sure of eBay's position, although we highly suspected it would be this:

Based on the details we know about the anticipated listings, we believe these would violate our policy regarding offensive material,” the company said in a statement to The Kansas City Star. “EBay will not permit the items in question to be posted to the eBay site, and they will be removed if they are posted.”

The announcement came the same day that Tiller’s family implored eBay to prevent the auction.

“These materials contain hate messages, glorify violence against abortion doctors who provide constitutionally protected medical services, and instruct on means of violence, including bombing, of abortion clinics,” said Lee Thompson, an attorney for the Tiller family, in a letter sent to eBay on Tuesday and approved by Tiller’s widow, Jeanne Tiller.

“We urge you to deny access to the resources of eBay for this reprehensible and vile ‘auction.’ ”

Done. Good. And expected.

AUDIO: Laffy on the radio talking anti-abortion fundraiser for Dr. Tiller's assassin

By GottaLaff

I was on the Radio Machine with the absolutely wonderful Angie Coiro (on San Francisco's progressive station Green 960) Monday night, discussing the story about anti-choicers raising money on e-Bay for the legal defense of Dr. George Tiller's assassin.

If you missed the Big News, I now have a regular radio spot with her every Friday night at 6:45 Pacific!

I lerves me the Angie; it's like talking to my best friend...

...only in front of thousands and thousands of people.

Okay, I just made myself nervous.

I was on the Radio Machine with the absolutely wonderful Angie Coiro (on San Francisco's progressive station Green 960) again last night, snarking about Pro-Life Cupcake Day movement. Seriously.

Angie has hinted strongly at my becoming a recurring guest on her show. To say I'm flattered is the biggest understatement... ever.

Family planning stops more than 800,000 abortions

Holy crap. That means in the eight years GWB jacked around with "abstinence only" bull, there were millions of abortions that could have been prevented.

NEW YORK -- Publicly funded family planning prevents nearly 2 million unintended pregnancies and more than 800,000 abortions in the United States each year, according to new research intended to counter conservative objections to expanding the program.

The data is in a report being released today by the Guttmacher Institute, a think tank whose research is generally respected even by activists who don't share its advocacy of abortion rights.

Report co-author Rachel Benson Gold called the family planning program "smart government at its best," asserting that every dollar spent on it saves taxpayers $4.

VIDEO: President Fetus

By GottaLaff

Misleading? Repugnant? The answer to both is a resounding "yes":

Via David Weigel:

This ad has been making the rounds in pro-life circles and among pro-choicers who find it disgusting. [...]

For one, nobody who has profiled Barack Obama’s family has encountered evidence that the 18-year-old Ann Dunham and the 25-year-old Barack Obama, Sr. conceived their son by accident. [...]

It’s rather silly of Mark Hemingway to “speculate what a 19-year-old (sic) Ann Dunham would have done if abortion had been a legal option.” She wanted to have a baby.

It's also a despicable use of Obama 's image. Count me in as one of the "pro-choicers who finds it disgusting."

"As a working mom with a child with Down syndrome, Sarah Palin makes me shriek"

By GottaLaff

I know this is a little long, but I pared it down. I suggest reading the whole thing. It needs no commentary from me, because the author makes her views, that coincide with my own, loud and clear:

Our 5-year-old daughter has Down syndrome. [...] "I knew it I knew it I knew it I knew it I knew it I knew it! I KNEW John McCain couldn't resist putting a baby with Down syndrome up there on the national stage — that opportunist!!" [...]

"And what the fuck does this woman think she's doing; does she have any idea what it takes to raise a kid with Down syndrome? She thinks she can be vice president and take care of that baby?"

I stopped, startling myself, and clapped my hand over my own mouth. Where had that come from? How Sarah Palin parents her kids is absolutely none of my business. I know that. At least, the rational me knows that. [...]

I have two daughters — Sophie, my 5-year-old, and Annabelle, who is 7 — and I have a full-time job.

My own balancing act is inelegant. Forget leading the free world; I can't even balance my hair on the top of my head as well as Sarah Palin does. I don't wear high heels. My glasses were on clearance at LensCrafters. And my milk never did come in, so I never got to leave a meeting to breastfeed. I sneak out of bed at 4 a.m. to get some work done before it's time to make lunches, so I can sneak out of work at 2:30 to take my kid to her Brownie meeting. My eye twitches all the time from fatigue, and there are currently three overflowing baskets of laundry in my living room. My office is even worse.

I know how hard it is, being a working mom. And how important. [...]

As a staff writer at New Times for many years, I wrote a lot about John McCain — on other topics, too, but a lot about McCain. When Annabelle was born, that continued. It wasn't until Sophie came along that I felt compelled to take a different job at the paper, as an editor. It's just as tough, but not as all-consuming as writing those long cover stories we publish each week.

So, basically, I stopped writing about McCain so I could spend more time with my baby with Down syndrome (I was also, frankly, banking on the notion that he'd never make a run for president in 2008) and now here he is, poised to be the next leader of the free world, and his running mate is a woman with a baby with Down syndrome. [...] Tell me you wouldn't run around your kitchen shrieking, too. [...]

Palin is shamelessly using her personal life to sell her candidacy in a way that's reminiscent of just one other politician I can think of — and that's John McCain. But at least in McCain's case, he's his own pawn, vis-à-vis his POW story. Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, and Trig are their mother's pawns. [...]

And you expect me to rely on Sarah Palin, a woman who wants to ban books and teach creationism, and John McCain, a man who wants to ban government spending on almost everything but war, to help me take care of my kids? [...]

I don't know if Sarah Palin would create a safety net strong enough to catch Sophie, but I do know one area of my daughter's life (both my daughters' lives) that interests her greatly.

Reproductive rights. [...] When it comes to this topic, to be honest, I can barely bring myself to think of Sophie. [...]

What if — and I can hardly type the words — someday Sophie meets a bad man? Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion under any circumstance, including in the case of rape.

I am clearly not done shrieking.

FOX News labels "anti-choice" Sarah Palin as "pro-choice," repeatedly

This makes my freaking blood boil. Via Newshounds.

One of the appeals of Sarah Palin to the far-right base John McCain is trying to motivate is her unequivocal opposition to abortion, even in cases of rape and/or incest. But to try to coax disappointed Hillary-voters into settling for another woman - any woman, as if we're all interchangeable s'long as we've got the parts - FOX chyrons erroneously labelled Palin "pro-choice."

She's Not Pro-Life, She's Anti-Choice

Every single person opining on or stumping for the Democrats should immediately remove the phrase "pro-life" from their vocabulary. The woman believes that a teenager raped by her father should be forced to give birth. Screw the life of a ravaged child for a mass of blastocytes. That's not pro-life.

Republican "Pro Life" Candidate Paid For Girlfriend's Abortion

By Paddy

It used to be that these stories were the anomaly rather than the norm. Not any more. It's just pathetic in it's hypocrisy. The whole thing is rather detailed, so go read at the link for more.

An Oregon City woman who dated congressional candidate Mike Erickson seven years ago said she asked him directly whether he wanted to have a baby. He shook his head no, she said, and paid for her abortion.

In interviews with The Oregonian, the woman said she met Erickson in September 2000, and she had the abortion in January 2001. They saw each other afterward, she said, even going on a trip to Mexico in March, before the relationship ended. She spoke on the condition that only her first name, Tawnya, be used.

Her story is backed up by medical and other records, and the accounts of two friends, one of whom was with her at the abortion. Their story conflicts directly with Erickson's version.
