VIDEO: "Tea Party Rap"

By GottaLaff

CBSNewsOnline — April 14, 2010 — Singer Lloyd Marcus performs the "American Tea Party Anthem" at a Tea Party rally in Boston, Massachusetts
Look! An African American at a Tea Tantrum rally! And he "raps" [sic]! Not much of a singer, though.

In fact, this is just embarrassing:

"I'm an America-a-a-a-a-a-aaaaan!!"

Hey Lloyd, if you have to insist that you're an America-a-a-a-a-aaan!, you're "not racists", you're "not stupid", and that you're "gonna win" that loudly and obnoxiously, then there very well
may be room for reasonable doubt.

President Obama conjugates his verbs

By GottaLaff

Mike Allen flags a fascinating moment from David Remnick’s new Obama book, in which Obama explains why he had an easier time than the previous generation’s African American pols in calibrating his “dialect” for different audiences:

“The fact that I conjugate my verbs and speak in a typical Midwestern newscaster’s voice — there’s no doubt that this helps ease communication between myself and white audiences. And there’s no doubt that when I’m with a black audience I slip into a slightly different dialect. But the point is, I don’t feel the need to speak a certain way in front of a black audience. There’s a level of self-consciousness about these issues the previous generation had to negotiate that I don’t feel I have to.”

Um, about that phony George Bush twangy cowboy act-- that was just fine with the GOP. They bought into the brush clearing, the strutting around in flight suits, "mission accomplished"... but conjugate verbs?

Verbs??

That's positively criminal.

Poll: Stimulus views vary by race

You know what to blame for this? The middle class tax cut that the majority of Americans didn't (and don't) even realize they got. The last time the President mentioned it, even Jeff didn't know what he was talking about, his check gets direct deposited and he never even noticed he was having less taken out in taxes. I would think those people who overwhelmingly get paper checks and scrutinize the deductions are the ones who know they got a cut.

Perceptions of the effectiveness of President Barack Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package differ dramatically between racial groups, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

The poll, sponsored by New America Media, a corroboration of 2,500 ethnic media outlets, reported that less than 40 percent of whites, Hispanics and Native Americans said the stimulus has made the economy better, compared to 59 percent of African-Americans and 47 percent of Asian-Americans.

(snip)

In total, 54 percent said the stimulus package has been ‘a good thing for their family or local community’ while 27 percent said it was ‘a bad thing’ and 19 percent either did not know or had no opinion.

Only 45 percent of the white Americans polled, however, thought the stimulus has been a good thing compared to 36 percent who think it was a bad thing. But among African Americans, 84 percent said the stimulus was a good thing and only 4 percent said the opposite.

Hispanics, Native Americans and Asian Americans all polled above 60 percent in concluding that the stimulus was a good thing.

Asian-Americans trailed the other two groups, with 62 percent concluding that the stimulus was a good thing, 10 percent saying it was a bad thing and 28 percent did not know or had no opinion. Hispanics and Native Americans polled identically at 67 percent good, 11 percent bad and 22 percent did not know or had no opinion.

Black Reporters on the Beat of Michelle Obama

Optimism among black voters grows in Obama era

It's slow and sure, but it damn well makes me feel good.

Four months into President Obama’s tenure, the mood of African-Americans throughout the country has improved to historic levels, according to a new Pew Research Study.

Asked whether Americans can always find a way to solve problems, 62 percent of blacks agree, up 22 points in just two years. In fact, agreement was up 12 points across racial lines, reflecting a more optimistic attitude than in 2007, despite the murky economic situation.

“The optimism from a personal sense about the country is most pronounced among African Americans,” Pew Research Center President Andrew Kohut said. “We've been tracking attitudes now since 1987 and we haven't seen it bump up like it has now. It's hard not to give [Obama] credit.”

(snip)

The study on values and core attitudes shows African-Americans feel more invested in society — in fact, more blacks than whites say voting gives them a say in how the government makes decisions.

(snip)

In fact, after the election of the country's first black president, Americans of every race say racial attitudes and relations are improving. Just 31 percent of Americans say there hasn't been much improvement for African-Americans, an all-time low and down 10 points in the past two years.

Social views on racial issues have changed markedly since the Pew Center started the annual check on American values in 1987. That year, just 48 percent of respondents said it is all right for white people and black people to date each other; today, the number who support interracial dating has climbed to 83 percent.

Even among whites in the South, where just 30 percent backed interracial dating in 1989, the number has climbed, rising 39 points in recent years.

Obama's grandmother to help fight tsetse fly

Nice to see that she's trying to do good also.

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama's step-grandmother will use her newfound celebrity status to help eradicate the tsetse fly, an insect that causes sleeping sickness, the African Union (AU) said Monday.

Sarah Obama, 87, was given a spray pump and enough insecticide to treat 3,000 animals -- which like humans can be infected by the insect -- by an AU team that visited her village of Kogelo in western Kenya last month.

"Mama Sarah very much appreciated the gift and ... vowed in her local language that she will be the goodwill ambassador in her area to eradicate tsetse flies," the AU said.

Some 37 African countries are affected by tsetse and sleeping sickness or trypanosomiasis.

Obama's win brings firsts for black press

About time. I don't know anyone ('cept maybe Pat Buchanan) that would have a problem with our press corps more accurately reflecting the makeup of the country.

Barack Obama’s election as president is prompting major changes in the nation’s black press, ushering in a series of firsts that editors say will reshape print, Internet, radio and television coverage aimed at African-American audiences.

Essence, the top selling magazine among black women, will have a full-time White House reporter for the first time. Ebony magazine will add a White House reporter, either full-time or as needed. Its sister publication, Jet magazine, will have a weekly two-page Washington report in every issue.

And Black Entertainment Television is scrapping its usual fare of videos and sitcoms for a four-hour live broadcast of Obama’s swearing in — just as the leading cable network in black households did for both party conventions last summer, and on Election Day. TV One will do the same, airing 21 hours of inauguration coverage throughout the day.

Obama's election inspires blacks in Latin America

A refreshingly hopeful moment in a day that is just ticking me off right and left.

BELMOPAN, Belize -- Dean Barrow doesn't look like the faces on his country's dollar bills. Nor does he resemble its previous leaders -- he is this Central American nation's first black prime minister.

By winning the post in February, Barrow broke through a glass ceiling that has existed in the Americas since the slave trade first brought people from Africa five centuries ago.

The sad reality in countries with large black populations, such as Brazil, and those with tiny communities, such as Mexico, is that Afro-Latinos have typically been relegated to the sidelines of politics and high finance.

But when it comes to race relations, the United States is once again casting its shadow on the Americas -- this time in a positive way, with the election of Barack Obama as president, according to politicians and experts in the region.

'It has to mean there will be a great opening up of minds and opening up of opportunities. It will make any sense of `the other' much less pronounced,''
Barrow said in an interview in Belize's lush capital. ``How can there appear to be anything strange about somebody of color making great strides politically in Latin America when a person of color is the president of the most powerful country on Earth?''

Sniff. Much nicer than the earlier stories.
Amanda Jones, 109, the daughter of a man born into slavery, has lived a life long enough to touch three centuries. And after voting consistently as a Democrat for 70 years, she has voted early for the country's first black presidential nominee.

McCain Communications Director Gave Reporters Incendiary Version Of "Carved B" Story Before Facts Were Known

By GottaLaff

The saga continues:

John McCain's Pennsylvania communications director told reporters in the state an incendiary version of the hoax story about the attack on a McCain volunteer well before the facts of the case were known or established -- and even told reporters outright that the "B" carved into the victim's cheek stood for "Barack," according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

John Verrilli, the news director for KDKA in Pittsburgh, told TPM Election Central that McCain's Pennsylvania campaign communications director gave one of his reporters a detailed version of the attack that included a claim that the alleged attacker said, "You're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson."

Verrilli also told TPM that the McCain spokesperson had claimed that the "B" stood for Barack. According to Verrilli, the spokesperson also told KDKA that Sarah Palin had called the victim of the alleged attack, who has since admitted the story was a hoax.

The KDKA reporter had called McCain's campaign office for details after seeing the story -- sans details -- teased on Drudge.

The McCain spokesperson's claims -- which came in the midst of extraordinary and heated conversations late yesterday between the McCain campaign, local TV stations, and the Obama camp, as the early version of the story rocketed around the political world -- is significant because it reveals a McCain official pushing a version of the story that was far more explosive than the available or confirmed facts permitted at the time.

The claims to KDKA from the McCain campaign were included in an early story that ran late yesterday on KDKA's Web site. The paragraphs containing these assertions were quickly removed from the story after the Obama campaign privately complained that KDKA was letting the McCain campaign spin a racially-charged version of the story before the facts had been established, according to two sources familiar with the discussions.

The story with the removed grafs is still right here. We preserved the three missing grafs from yesterday:

A source familiar with what happened yesterday confirmed that the unnamed spokesperson was communications director Peter Feldman. Feldman was also quoted yesterday making virtually identical assertions on the Web site of another local TV station, WPXI. But those quotes, which we also preserved here, are also no longer available on WPXI's site, for reasons that are unclear. [...]

There's no evidence that anyone from McCain national headquarters put out a version of events like this.

After the story appeared on KDKA's site and this and other pieces in the local press started flying around the political world, an Obama spokesperson in the state angrily insisted to KDKA that it was irresponsible for the station to air the McCain spokesperson's incendiary version of events before the facts were fully known, according to two sources familiar with the discussions.

After that, KDKA went back to McCain's Pennsylvania spokesperson, Feldman, and asked if he stood by the story as he'd earlier told it, but he started backing off the story, a source familiar with the talks says. That prompted KDKA to remove the grafs.

Now I understand what this meant:
If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting."

VIDEO-- Police on McCain worker mugging story: "It could have blown up into a national incident"

By GottaLaff

Via TPM:

A portion of the press conference held this afternoon by Pittsburgh police.

Background here.

There are many questions to be asked about who pushed this story yesterday afternoon and last night. A lot of explaining.

Police: Gramm-pa McCain's Campaign Worker Admits Making Up Story

By GottaLaff

So much for this Big Scary Story. Background here and here.

Police say they have received photos from the ATM machine and "the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction."

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Police sources tell KDKA that a campaign worker has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter "B" in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker. [...]

Investigators did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and "the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction."

This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

The commander added that Todd will face charges; but police have not commented on what those charges will be.
Hey Drudge, how's that credibility thing working for you?

H/t: Bucky, AMERICABlog

"If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting."

By GottaLaff

STORY UPDATED HERE.

I posted the story here, and we all raised our eyebrows. Well, we weren't alone:

[B]ut now the story may be starting to fall apart. Police in Pittsburgh are relating "inconsistencies" in the story and want a worker for John McCain to take a polygraph, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports this morning. [...]

Still later, conservative columnist Michelle Malkin, and some others, grew skeptical. For one thing, the "B" was carved a little too lightly and perfectly -- and backward, as if done using a mirror. Smoking Gun probed a too-pat "Twitter" angle and Gawker looked at her MySpace page.

Now police say that evidence from the ATM that she reportedly visited did not match her account. And then she changed her story, admitting that her assailant did not see a McCain bumper sticker on her assault, and adding to the account a sexual assault and losing consciousness.

John Moody, executive vice president at Fox News, has now commented on his blog that "this incident could become a watershed event in the 11 days before the election. If Ms. Todd’s allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee. If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting."
And hmm, it's starting to look more and more like a hoax, now, isn't it?

Woman Attacked At ATM, Assailant Carves Letter Into Her Face

By GottaLaff

UPDATE:

Joe The Mugger?

Drudge is hyping this story to the rafters (he must have run out of outlier polls), but Malkin is skeptical. So is TSG. And TMZ. And Wonkette. I have no idea, and hope the woman gets some medical attention for her wounds. Occasional acts of violence with political ramifications will occur on both sides, I'm afraid. It seems to me that we should try and calm this stuff down a little in coverage, rather than ratchet it up. A reader adds:

If you were being mugged and attacked by a big old angry man, would you be still enough for him to neatly scratch a "B" into the center of your cheek? Also, the "B" is backwards. It would look correct in the mirror if you were to scratch it into your own face. This is a sad story.

H/t: Eve

They just broke this story on MSNBC, too. Luckily, the woman is okay:
A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said. [...]

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.

Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank's surveillance cameras.
The robber is described as a "dark skinned black man". Yeah, that won't add to the already out-of-control McCain supported racism.

H/t: One of our Anonymi for the link.

UPDATE-- Paddy linked me to this, and it brings back memories, as well as suspicions. In Comments, we've all been expressing similar feelings.

Early voting in Evansville

Sniff. An emailer describes his early voting in Evansville, Indiana to Ben-

For me the most moving moment came when the family in front of me, comprising probably 4 generations of voters (including an 18 year old girl voting for her first time and a 90-something hunched-over grandmother), got their turn to vote. When the old woman left the voting booth she made it about halfway to the door before collapsing in a nearby chair, where she began weeping uncontrollably. When we rushed over to help we realized that she wasn't in trouble at all but she had not truly believed, until she left the booth, that she would ever live long enough to cast a vote for an African-American for president. Anyone who doesn't think that African-American turnout will absolutely SHATTER every existing record is in for a very rude surprise.
