Michelle Obama, girls get rare London palace tour

Damn, that really is a big deal. Apparently the Queen and Mrs Obama are quite the fast friends.
LONDON— First came the hug, then a guided tour of Buckingham Palace.
First Lady Michelle Obama, on a visit to London last week, got permission from Queen Elizabeth II for a guided tour of the palace with her daughters, Sasha and Malia.
They were shown around the queen's official residence and its gardens and the queen herself greeted them afterward, according to a royal source who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was private.
In April, during a visit to Britain with her husband, Michele Obama made a warm impression on the queen -- so much so that the monarch strayed from protocol and briefly wrapped her arm around the first lady in a rare public show of affection.

Obama daughters surprised with new swingset

How fun!!! I don't remember this much excitement since the Bush girls got the key to the liquor cabinet!!
WASHINGTON (AP) — First daughters Malia and Sasha Obama got a big surprise after school Wednesday: a brand-new swing set.
They squealed with delight upon seeing it, a spokeswoman for the first lady said.
President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, went to work while the girls were at school, arranging for the set to be installed on the south grounds of the White House within sight of the Oval Office, where their father spends plenty of time.
Late last year as the couple planned the family's move to Washington, they talked about ways to make the historic residence feel more like home for their girls, said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama.
Malia and Sasha, ages 10 and 7, had never lived anywhere but Chicago.
(snip)
"They ran right for it. They were really, really excited. All four of them," McCormick Lelyveld said.
The girls played on the set for almost an hour in chilly weather, she said.

Michelle Obama: White House Dog Coming Soon!

The puppy is coming, the puppy is coming!!
So, when? In April, Mrs. Obama says – after she and the President take daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, on a vacation for spring break.
Here's a sample of a typical family conversation on the matter: "So Sasha says, 'April 1st.' I said, 'April.' She says, 'April 1st.' It's, like, April!," Mrs. Obama recalls. "Got to do it after spring break. You can't get a new dog and then go away for a week."
And what kind of dog will soon be frolicking on the South Lawn? Mrs. Obama says the family is looking for a rescue Portuguese Water dog who is "old enough" and a "match" for the family dynamic.
(snip)
"Oh, the names are really bad. I don't even want to mention it, because there are names floating around and they're bad," Mrs. Obama says with a laugh. "You listen and you go – like, I think, Frank was one of them. Frank! Moose was another one of them. Moose. I said, well, what if the dog isn't a moose? Moose. I'm like, no, come on, let's work with the names a little bit."

Like father, like... Sasha Obama Shoots Hoops
By GottaLaff
Saturday in the suburbs turned a little bit more exciting than usual for some local parents and children here, as President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to an elementary school to watch his younger daughter, Sasha, play basketball. [...]No word on how she did. It doesn't matter. President Dad was proud, and Sasha knew he made time for her bball game, even though he's been kinda busy.
The Obamas have said they intend to become a part of the local community now that they live in Washington, but they are also taking pains to keep Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, from too much exposure to the press. In a recent television interview, Mr. Obama, an avid basketball player, happily reported that Sasha had decided to take up the sport.

Score one for Michelle Obama: Sasha & Malia dolls have been "retired"
By GottaLaff

Hoping to buy a pair of those Sasha and Malia dolls? You’re out of luck. And the White House couldn’t be happier.
White House officials were very, very pleased on Tuesday after learning that the company that makes Beanie Babies had decided to stop selling its Sweet Sasha and Marvelous Malia dolls.[...]
On Tuesday, the company’s Web site included pictures of the two dolls beneath a red sign that read “Retired.”
Tsk tsk. So young for retirement. Do dolls get a pension? After all, they'll need something to pay off their dollhouses.

Daniel Radcliffe invites America's first daughters Sasha and Malia for a tour of the Harry Potter set

Man, if only my dad had been president.... Bet the President goes along for the tour.
Daniel Radcliffe has invited President Barack Obama’s daughters on a personal tour of the set of Harry Potter.
The 19-year-old star said he would be 'honoured' to show Malia and Sasha around when he starts filming the final movie, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows later this year.
Radcliffe, who plays the boy wizard in the films of JK Rowling’s series, said in an interview: 'I’d like to take this opportunity to issue a public invitation to the Obamas that if their daughters would like a private tour of the Harry Potter set, I would be honoured to be their personal tour guide.'

First lady objects to Sasha, Malia dolls

Good for her. They could at least fess up to trying to make money off the First Girls.
CHICAGO, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. first lady Michelle Obama is taking a Westmont, Ill., company to task for marketing dolls with the same names as her children, Malia and Sasha.Ty Inc., the company that created and distributes Beanie Babies, has been promoting two dolls with dark complexions and dark hair -- one named "Marvelous Malia" and the other named "Sweet Sasha" -- as part of its TyGirlz line. The items hit the market this month, prior to President Barack Obama's inauguration.
"We believe it is inappropriate to use young private citizens for marketing purposes," a spokeswoman for the first lady told Crain's chicagobusiness.com.

Beanie Babies maker sells Sasha, Malia dolls

Just the first of many to come I'd guess. Hopefully they won't make any Bratz style ones.....
CHICAGO – The company that made Beanie Babies a top toy craze is hoping for another winner with dolls named "Sweet Sasha" and "Marvelous Malia."Um, sure.
Now where have we heard those names before?
Ty Inc. has released the 12-inch plush dolls as part of the company's "TyGirlz Collection," introduced in 2007. The Sasha doll has pigtails and wears a white and pink dress with hearts. The Malia doll has a side ponytail and a long-sleeve shirt with capri pants.
The Oak Brook-based company chose the dolls' names because "they are beautiful names," not because of any resemblance to President Obama's daughters, said spokeswoman Tania Lundeen.
"There's nothing on the dolls that refers to the Obama girls," Lundeen said. "It would not be fair to say they are exact replications of these girls. They are not."
