ROSELAND, N.J., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- The United States shed 522,000 non-farm jobs December to January, a research group said Wednesday.
Automatic Data Processing Inc. (NYSE:DP) also said the previous month's job losses were worse than previously estimated. Instead of 659,000 jobs lost in the November to December period, 693,000 jobs were cut, ADP said.
The recent month includes a reduction of 92,000 jobs among businesses with 500 or more workers, 255,000 among mid-sized businesses and 175,000 among businesses with fewer than 50 workers.
As manufacturing tends to define the large-business category, the figures indicate job cuts have spread well beyond manufacturing, the report said.
Construction jobs dropped by 83,000 in January, bringing the total loss of construction jobs to 923,000 since January 2007, the report said.
