UPDATE: Here's the video, and I've adjusted the blog title to reflect the addition.
Rachel Maddow interviewed Speaker Pelosi, and here's what we now know (I'm sure we'll get video on this later):
- Nancy Pelosi is not for BushCo immunity. She has no problem with prosecutions, because "nobody is above the law." Rachel is interviewing her on the Tee Vee Machine as I type.
- She also said, flat out, that nobody told her they were using "enhanced interrogation." Democrats were never told that the United States was torturing anyone.
- Pelosi also would like to change the rules, allowing those who receive super duper top secret highly classified info to blow the whistle when they object upon learning that they're government is up to no good. Members of Oversight are currently not allowed to talk to anyone, they'd be violating national security. She is out to change that. No president should have that kind of authority, she says.
- On the leaked details about Obama's Iraq plan: Pelosi says the House has tried to end the war 6 or 7 times. She is happy to be on a path to end the war, even if it takes 19 rather than 16 months, although she recalls that Prez O said "by 19 months". 50,000 seems like a lot of troops to her, but she's in wait-and-see mode. A third of that, maybe 15-20,000 would be better, but she's waiting to see what purpose the troops would have, and where they'd be stationed.
- Could health care reform happen this year? Nancy says it's essential. First and foremost, start with health care reform, entitlement reform. It affects everything else. She wants bipartisanship for legitimacy. But they can't dilute their goals, the quality of their policy. Take it to the American people, she says. Promote it to America. Hopefully, they will insist that their reps will vote for it.
- On approaching Republicans, would she change anything? They're all over the Tee Vee Machine, says Rachel. But, as Rachel said, Nancy "smacked her down": The Republicans came out very poorly during the stim package process, Nancy said. They vote for what they believe in, and they don't believe in a new direction for America.
- Afghanistan: "What a tragedy... We didnt' eliminate Al Qaeda, we rattled them... They've come back." She goes on to diss BushCo's lack of planning. This can't be accomplished militarily, we have to work with NATO. It's about governance. Reducing corruption, drug trade. Give more power to the Afghan people... a stake in their future. Reconstruction, the economy. We can't change 100s of years. We need regional cooperation... Pakistan has to be honest. It's about India, Russia, Iran, Pakistan... We have to work together. People are so excited about Obama. They think he'll listen, not lecture or dictate. It's a longterm, big mission... so that the Taliban doesn't wait us out. There needs to be a plan.
