John McCain: Obama Suspended His Campaign Too

This is truly a WTF moment. When Senator Amnesia suspended his campaign, it was a huge story, the kind that lingers in one's memory. Well, not Sen. Amnesia's, apparently.

Then again, he could have simply reviewed those new fangled things that record events... called videos:

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), under fire in a GOP primary for his support for the bailout, is now claiming, inaccurately, that Barack Obama joined him in suspending his presidential campaign to address the 2008 financial crisis.

Dear Senator: We all saw this on the Tee Vee Machine. You boasted about your suspending your campaign, and challenged Obama to do the same... remember?

In fact, of course, McCain returned to Washington of his own volition. And in an interview with TPM today outside the Senate chamber, McCain acknowledged as much -- but also appeared to try to drag Obama into the mess.

So why are you saying this again? Are you trying to lose the election?

"[Bush] didn't ask me to suspend my campaign," said McCain. "I suspended my campaign -- as did Senator Obama -- to come back to Washington because the President had told me that we were in a world financial collapse. That's why I did what I did. I always said that consistently."

No. Nononono. NO! Remember that whole debate thing? And how...? And the boasting...? And country first... ? And... ? Oh geez, just read this and follow the links:

But unlike McCain, Obama never announced he was suspending his campaign. Quite the opposite, in fact: After McCain's announcement, Obama said he still planned to show up for the presidential debate that Friday, arguing that a president needed to be able to do two things at once.

CNN allows Gramm-pa McCain's lies to continue unchallenged

Gramm-pa McCain in a Colorado speech on CNN:

We suspended our campaign, we stopped advertising.

Obama has voted to raise taxes 94 times.

The clip from the speech was just now aired. Both of these are outright lies that have already been completely refuted. Nobody called him on it.

IWRC* Palin is now saying, in a clip from a speech from Columbus, Ohio (paraphrased):

Joe Biden is against clean coal.

However, in the debate, Joe Biden listed clean coal as one of the components of their alternative energy plan. I even remember commenting on it in the open thread. But TBPNTOTV!!!'s** Bill Schneider said nothing to correct the record.

"After reversing on debate, John McCain looks like John McCan't"

Paraphrasing Thomas DeFrank, John McCain declared defeat, and left:

...With economic jitters playing to traditional Democratic dogma, McCain's Big Mo suddenly reverted to his challenger.

"This is the attention-deficit-disorder campaign," said a bewildered senior Republican operative. "They've had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week."

In the process, McCain invited questions about his judgment and ability to work his will in Washington if elected.

"This raises the fundamental issue of how a guy who is hated by his own party can govern," fretted a GOP mandarin who worked for several Presidents. "If he can't control the Republicans, how can he run a country?"

Then there was that Big Faux Campaign Suspension:

But McCain ignored the first rule of high-stakes summitry: before committing precious credibility, make sure a deal's in hand, or at least in sight. In this case McCain, who probably has more Democratic friends on Capitol Hill than Republicans, couldn't even deliver his own side.

Suh-nap-aroony! It's call-out time!

"John McCain sought to change the subject from his out-of-touch response to the economic crisis with a big announcement that he was 'suspending' his campaign. But the only thing McCain really wants suspended is the American people's disbelief. In fact, he's been in full campaign mode the entire time...

"When McCain finally arrived in Washington, almost twenty-four hours after his announcement -- and after Congressional leadership announced a deal in principle -- he huddled with his lobbyist campaign advisors while his running mate held a political rally and his political spokesmen and surrogates were out in full force, continuing to attack Barack Obama.

"So make no mistake: John McCain did not 'suspend' his campaign. He just turned a national crisis into an occasion to promote his campaign. It's become just another political stunt, aimed more at shoring up the Senator's aimed more at shoring up the Senator's political fortunes than the nation's economy. And it does nothing to help advance this critical legislation to protect the American people during this time of economic crisis."

The only thing that was suspended was disbelief.

Gramm-pa McHypocrite and his Big Faux Campaign Suspension

When David Letterman busts a presidential candidate on national TV, you know things are bad. I feel a Bust Gramm-pa trend coming. People everywhere are discovering all kinds of contradictions. It's become a parlor game of sorts! Weee!

Let's take a look at this so-called "campaign suspension" in detail:

With the numerous appearances by McCain campaign staff and advisers today on the cable news channels — and McCain himself scheduled to appear on all three network newscasts tonight — one can be forgiven for wondering what exactly Sen. John McCain meant when he said he would “suspend” his campaign.

Campaign ads continue to air across the country — though, understandably, it might well take a while to pull them all.

However, several campaign advisers accompanied McCain to his office on Capitol Hill, and he even brought one to the meeting at the White House with President George W. Bush and Sen. Barack Obama.

Huffington Post reports that McCain campaign offices around the nation are open for business as usual.

Joel Gay, of The New Mexico Independent, at the McCain-Palin Victory ‘08 headquarters in Albuquerque:

The parking lot outside the McCain/Palin Victory ‘08 headquarters in Albuquerque was full and the office was buzzing with activity this morning just hours after McCain announced he was temporarily halting his campaign to work on the nation’s economic crisis.

Three volunteers sat at a bank of phones in the sunlit front of the office building near Interstate-25 and Jefferson Boulevard Northeast, fielding calls and helping a elderly McCain supporter pick up yard signs and bumper stickers. [...]

In the warehouse-like rear of the building, another dozen or so people put together yard signs, pored over clipboards and grazed at a table laid out with fruit, pastries and drinks. The walls were hung with giant blue McCain signs and banners and a large TV burbled in the corner, tuned to a news channel.

Office manager Burley Cain stood talking with an aide, but said he couldn’t answer questions about the campaign suspension and whether it was meant to trickle down to the local level. ...
