The author left out a few other accomplishments during Obama's 2 + months in office, like this and this, and this, and... well, you know the rest. I'm thinking all that makes him honorary degree-worthy.This is hilarious. Not even Notre Dame did this:
An [Arizona State University] academic committee has decided President Barack Obama won’t receive an honorary degree when he addresses this spring’s graduates at a May 13 ceremony, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. Honorary degrees are traditionally offered to commencement speakers as a way to call further attention to their contributions and to thank them for their appearance.
University spokeswoman Sharon Keeler said the committee decided Obama hasn’t served long enough in the White House to properly judge his legacy.
"His body of work is yet to come," Keeler told the AP. "That’s why we’re not recognizing him with a degree at the beginning of his presidency."
Wow. Really? Obama hasn't done enough yet? Writing two bestsellers, organizing the biggest and most well-funded grassroots campaign for President, becoming President, being the nation's first black President to boot.....the dude even won two friggin' Grammy awards too! But nope, ASU thinks Obama's resumé is small fry. [...]
The East Valley Tribune also points out the inherent hypocrisy in ASU's decision, noting that they conferred an honorary degree to Barry Goldwater in 1961, three years before he was the Republican nominee for President. Sure, the guy was an Arizona man, but ASU also handed out honorary degrees to non-Arizona politicians like Kim Campbell, the first female Canadian prime minister. [...]
Clearly, this is all good news for McCain. I don't know how any serious journalist in the media can conclude otherwise.

These were only a few of the pertinent excerpts.Cardinal George of Chicago has a soft spot for pedophile priests – and is not embarrassed by letting them stay in his mansion or on the job, but he is, in brazen hypocrisy, embarrassed that the President of the United States will be the Notre Dame commencement speaker.
Now that’s the kind of thing that not only gives religious self-righteousness a bad name, it is a frightening disregard for the impact of priests who sexually abuse children.

So, it is not an embarrassment to host and lodge pedophile priests and let others continue to have contact with children, but it is an embarrassment to have the President of the United States speak at the flagship Catholic University? These are warped priorities that are as destructive to victims of Priest sex abuse as they are an insult to the Presidency.
Fortunately, Notre Dame is not succumbing to Cardinal George’s tolerance for pedophiles and intolerance for such life-saving research as stem-cell research. [...]
Clearly, there are many fine priests committed to the teachings of Christ, but Cardinal George sullies them by – shall we say – being as chummy with pedophile priests as if they had just been guilty of unpaid parking tickets.
Many young people sexually abused by priests never fully recover, and their families experience the dreadful pain of betrayal and coping with the after effects.
Cardinal George should spend more time with dealing with these victims than dishonoring the President of the United States and the prestigious tradition of Notre Dame.
I'm pretty eh over the "outrage". These are the same people who have conniption fits every spring over the Vagina Monologues and pretend like little Josh and Jen O'Malley save themselves for marriage. You want to be treated like a serious institution of higher learning, you've got to start acting like one.

From a political perspective, the big question for the coming days is who is more discredited by the protest: a president eager to promote the Democratic Party's faith-friendly ways or the Catholics who are looking to deny the leader of the free world—and a popular one, at that—a college commencement address.

WASHINGTON, March 20 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama will deliver the commencement address at three upcoming college graduations, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.
Gibbs told a briefing that Obama will serve as the Class of 2009 commencement speaker at the Arizona State University, the University of Notre Dame, and the United States Naval Academy.
The president will speak to Arizona State graduates on May 13 and follow up that commencement by addressing Notre Dame graduates on Sunday, May 17.
Midshipmen at the Naval Academy will hear from the president on May 22, Gibbs said.
