VIDEO: Sarah Palin Meets the Press after Testifying in Hacking Trial

Wordy McMilkIt even took advantage of this moment to play the Trig card... again... or as Wordy would say:

A little background:

During the 2008 campaign, David Kernell, then a college student, thought it might be fun to hack into Sarah Palin's email account and publish her private information on the web.

HuffPostNews Twitter Hacked By Crude Rightie Wingnuts

By GottaLaff

Some wingnuts hacked the HuffPost Twitter account and gave a few of us some free advertising. I must say, being promo'd as an elite lefty has made my day... not to mention the resulting uptick in followers.

Oh, and then there's the screengrab (above) that made it to Mediaite. Nice publicity, courtesy of a self-proclaimed conservative with a limited vocabulary derived from that of drunk eighth graders who stubbed their toes after having just been grounded following a rejection by the objects of their lust.

I really must remember to send a thank you note to those thoughtful little hackers, whoever they are.

Break-ins reported at another climate research center

By GottaLaff

Watergate redux.

To hell with the health and well-being of, you know, Planet Earth and its world population, our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc. It's much more important to fatten up bank accounts, make headlines, and pull off as many perverse power plays as possible:
As the United States — led by President Barack Obama — prepares to join the world in the fight against global warming, the opponents of reform are resorting to criminal desperation, harkening back to the amoral extremes of Richard Nixon. The release of the hacked emails from CRU was praised as the act of a “whistleblower” by conservatives. The timing couldn’t be better,” chortled Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK). The original Watergate scandal began when right-wing operatives burglarized the offices of their political opponents during a presidential election. “Climategate” is turning out to be worse — now the criminals are turning on scientists as the world burns.
Read the story about the break-in at the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis at the University of Victoria in British Columbia here.

Sometimes it feels like much of the world needs a gigantic straight jacket.

If Labour can't protect people like Gary McKinnon, it really stands for nothing

By GottaLaff

I got this link from a fellow Tweeter, with this message asking me to get the story out: "Can u help too? His family is scared for him.". Will do:

If Labour can't protect people like Gary McKinnon, it really stands for nothing
Alan Johnson must act: anyone who believes in the principles of justice would be alarmed by this state bullying of a hacker

Spy System Loots Computers in 103 Countries

By GottaLaff

I'm not feeling paranoid. No, not one bit:

A vast electronic spying operation has infiltrated computers and has stolen documents from hundreds of government and private offices around the world, including those of the Dalai Lama, Canadian researchers have concluded.

In a report to be issued this weekend, the researchers said that the system was being controlled from computers based almost exclusively in China, but that they could not say conclusively that the Chinese government was involved. [...]

Their sleuthing opened a window into a broader operation that, in less than two years, has infiltrated at least 1,295 computers in 103 countries, including many belonging to embassies, foreign ministries and other government offices, as well as the Dalai Lama’s Tibetan exile centers in India, Brussels, London and New York.

The researchers, who have a record of detecting computer espionage, said they believed that in addition to the spying on the Dalai Lama, the system, which they called GhostNet, was focused on the governments of South Asian and Southeast Asian countries. [...]

Still going strong, the operation continues to invade and monitor more than a dozen new computers a week, the researchers said in their report, “Tracking ‘GhostNet’: Investigating a Cyber Espionage Network.” They said they had found no evidence that United States government offices had been infiltrated, although a NATO computer was monitored by the spies for half a day and computers of the Indian Embassy in Washington were infiltrated.

The malware is remarkable both for its sweep — in computer jargon, it has not been merely “phishing” for random consumers’ information, but “whaling” for particular important targets — and for its Big Brother-style capacities. It can, for example, turn on the camera and audio-recording functions of an infected computer, enabling monitors to see and hear what goes on in a room. The investigators say they do not know if this facet has been employed. [...]

The electronic spy game has had at least some real-world impact, they said. For example, they said, after an e-mail invitation was sent by the Dalai Lama’s office to a foreign diplomat, the Chinese government made a call to the diplomat discouraging a visit. And a woman working for a group making Internet contacts between Tibetan exiles and Chinese citizens was stopped by Chinese intelligence officers on her way back to Tibet, shown transcripts of her online conversations and warned to stop her political activities.

Serious flaw in Internet Explorer not fixed yet

Just fyi. This looks pretty serious.

SAN FRANCISCO – Users of all current versions of Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer browser might be vulnerable to having their computers hijacked because of a serious security hole in the software that had yet to be fixed Monday.

The flaw lets criminals commandeer victims' machines merely by tricking them into visiting Web sites tainted with malicious programming code. As many as 10,000 sites have been compromised since last week to exploit the browser flaw, according to antivirus software maker Trend Micro Inc.

The sites are mostly Chinese and have been serving up programs that steal passwords for computer games, which can be sold for money on the black market. However, the hole is such that it could be "adopted by more financially motivated criminals for more serious mayhem — that's a big fear right now," Paul Ferguson, a Trend Micro security researcher, said Monday.
