My pal Rude Pundit tweeted me the news that this page has resurfaced (my original post and screen grab here).

Haters will continue to post their hate, and true to form, have to get around the rules in order to do just that.

Getting around rules is their specialty. Rules like, oh, do unto others. Isn't that The Golden Rule?

Not for 41 followers of public hatred and defiance.

Memo to Haiti haters: When you're in dire need and require help, you'll have to turn elsewhere. A whole lot of us won't be there for you... or at least won't want to. Our humanitarian side may push us into being, you know, humanitarian, despite our disgust.

Oh, and you might have the foresight to consider the consequences of not reaching out them.

Veterans Day encounter with Obama: "Sorry for any inconvenience," a terribly polite Secret Service agent whispered in my ear.

This is a must-read. It's one of the most heartwarming stories I've read in a very long time, and it involves President Obama, the First Lady, their visit to Arlington National Cemetery, and a bittersweet chance encounter.

Here are a few excerpts that won't even begin to do the story justice:

President Obama simply stuck out his hand and asked for my name as he stepped toward me amid a bone-chilling drizzle in the Gardens of Stone.[...]

What I got was an unexpected look into the eyes of a man who intertwined his roles as commander in chief and consoler in chief on a solemn day filled with remembrance and respect for sacrifices made - and sacrifices yet to be made.

I'm sure the cynics will assume this wasjust anotherObama photoop.[...]

I then told him I'm a reporter for the Daily News - but was just there to visit friends.

"Well, James," he said, looking me in the eye, "just because you're a journalist doesn't mean you can't honor your friends here."

The First Lady smiled and squeezed my hand. I thanked her for coming to Section 60.

Her face opened up into a smile filled with warmth and comfort, a welcome antidote for the weather and sadness around her. She said there was no finer place to be on Veterans Day.[...]

I am a cold-hearted, unsympathetic partisan

Late Monday afternoon I was standing in front of 200 or so congressional staff members when someone in the front row handed me a Blackberry with the news bulletin announcing Sen. Ted Stevens' seven-count felony conviction. As I read the news flash to the gasping Hill aides one thing jumped into mind: "Foley Friday," Sept. 29, 2006, when news broke of then-GOP Rep. Mark Foley's inappropriate behavior toward a House page. At that point in 2006, Republicans had already been buffeted for a year or more by a then-worsening situation in Iraq and a wide array of scandals. Just as it seemed things could not possibly get worse, they did. Only the most partisan of Democrats or cold-hearted of people would fail to have some compassion or sympathy towards a party for which virtually everything has gone wrong. Someone recently likened it to watching a wounded dog kicked.

I call it karma (despite the fact that I dislike that word), so I guess that makes me cold-hearted (although friends, family, and acquaintances would disagree). As for compassion and sympathy, I have very little for a party who supported an unprovoked, fraudulent invasion of a sovereign country, a tanking economy, my $20,000-a-year health care, annihilating the legal system, stacking the courts, endless corruption, dismantling our democracy, making a mockery of habeas corpus, demolishing our global standing, implementing torture, invading our privacy... ad nauseam.

Nor do I feel much for them after the smear tactics they've used, or at the very least failed to condemn, in the presidential campaign.

No, I don't have a lot of compassion or sympathy for most of these people at the moment. Check back with me on November 5th.

And I'd never, ever kick a wounded dog.

Obama makes personal condolence call to campaign worker's widow

Once again, Barack Obama shows what a mensch he is. I can't imagine Gramm-pa McCain doing this, or at least, doing it convincingly. From the Reno Gazette-Journal:

The widow of a Sparks man who died while campaigning door-to-door for Barack Obama last weekend received a personal phone call from the Democratic presidential nominee expressing his condolences.

Edmond Dewey Swensen, known as Dewey, was campaigning in Sparks on Oct. 18 when he suffered a massive heart attack and died, his wife Susan Swensen said Friday.

In addition to speaking to Obama, Susan Swensen said she also received flowers from him and has VIP seats for his campaign appearance in Reno today.

Flowers, a call... Obama has proved that he's not only smart and capable, but sensitive and compassionate. His warm, caring (mutual) bond with his supporters is a far cry from the erratic, confused, and more recently, hostile attitude that the McCain campaign exudes.

She said her husband, 64, had been campaigning for Obama for just four days but that it had changed him.

“It was like he had a complete purpose,” she said.

There it is. That's the effect Obama has on people. Not loud shrieks of hatred. Far from it. Barack Obama elicits positive energy and a sense of purpose to change things for the better.

When Obama called her on Monday, Susan Swensen said she didn’t answer the phone because she didn’t recognize the number, but called back and spoke to Obama directly.

He’d also left a message on her voicemail to offer his condolences and express his gratitude for Dewey Swensen’s campaign efforts.

“I’m so sorry for your loss and so grateful to you and Dewey for volunteering for the campaign,” Obama said in the message. “Obviously it’s a heartbreaking situation, but I just wanted to you to know I was thinking about you and praying for you and I hope all the great memories that I’m sure you must have tide you through these difficult times.”

In telling her story to friends and family members this week, she said people have been moved by Obama’s compassion.

“Of all these thousands of people ... he took the time to call me. Me,” she said.
Swensen, 64, grew up in Oakland, Calif., and worked for General Motors for 42 years until retiring in 2006.

When Swensen decided to canvass for Obama, it gave him a new energy and excitement, Susan Swensen said.

Bush bragged about being a "compassionate conservative" while bombing Iraq to smithereens and shredding our Constitutional rights; Grammps insists that Obama's part of some terrorist plot and has run the most negative smear campaign imaginable.

Barack Obama makes condolence calls, sends flowers, and speaks of hope and change.

Compassionate Democrat: Obama comforts crying student

Now this is what I call genuine compassion. In this video, Obama comforts a student, for real, not just for the cameras. The touching part starts at about 5:15.

Things got emotional during Sen. Barack Obama’s visit to a Michigan community college Tuesday.

Obama met individually with student Marilyn Pace, who is studying dental hygiene, and her financial aid counselor, Marcus McGrew, before speaking with a group of students at Wayne Community College in Taylor, Michigan.

Pace broke down in front of Obama and began crying after explaining the financial stresses she is facing while trying to get her education, help take care of her disabled father, and cope with the costs of commuting to school with the high price of gasoline.

Hey, he may not be a Compassionate Conservative like George Katrina Bush, but then again, who is? The answer: Thankfully, nobody.
